i use old store receipts for paper backing. much thinner and easier to remove after sewing. no extra cost either1

For background dilemma, use white low volume scrappy fabric. I've got about 4 different ones in one quilt. Unless you really look, you can't tell the difference. All you see is the "movement".

When my friend retired, he gifted me all his "work shirts". These were long-sleeved dress shirts in pastels and mostly white 100% cotton. He was going to live in t-shirts and cargo pants forever more. I used them all as background alternate blocks with my scrappy crumbs. Even as alternate columns for a Chinese coin pillow, the difference is not readily evident. Figuring out how to use up the cuffs and collars was fun too. Small bits of coffee prints and a beige pillow case combined with all those shades of white made for muted blocks. 🍄🍄

I use water soluble interfacing for both crumb quilts and string quilts. There's no need to tear anything away and it's fairly inexpensive as I wait for the sales. It's also much easier to sew with than paper.

Another awesome video. I’ve tried this before using adding machine tape, but never really finished any project with the crumb strips. I like the idea of using neutral fabric in between the strips. I think the reason why yours look so fabulous is because your choice of colors is excellent. Because they are from a collection, it looks way better than mine would.

Personally, I LOVE scrappy crumb quilts that are a jumble of everything and anything; but every time I tried to make one, my brain couldn't agree. I tended to over think and analyze my selections. Once I started keeping scraps in collections everything started clicking and became inspiring! Lol (but if someone else threw everything in, I'd LOVE IT! Lol)

I like the idea of more controlled crumbs. I wonder if anyone has used old paper patterns for the paper….
@dcinrb85387 ай бұрын
My adding machine tape crumb strips are about a yard long each. I create fabric by sewing the long sides together. About six strips. Then I remove the paper. After cutting out the pattern, I back each piece with interfacing. So far, I've made masks, bucket hats, pin cushions, pencil pouches, coasters, narrow table runner, pockets (for aprons) and toss pillows. No two things ever look alike.... Lol

I have a ton of scraps from EPP that I sewed to adding machine tape. Then I didn’t have a clue what to do with it. I don’t like all scraps (it’s Tula pink so looks like rainbow barf) but nothing else excited me. I think I’m going to try this, but maybe use some of the solid jelly roll strips I have laying around…. Great video!

I found used dryer sheets work great for crumb piecing. Just iron flat, bonus, they clean the sole plate of your iron, and cut into strips, squares…or after adding fabrics, cut into shapes and raw edge or turned edge appliqué. No paper to tear and uses items destined for the trash.

I received a lot of fabric from a neighbor years ago, in there was many 2-3 inch white strips. They were really thin, so I started using them as a foundation for my crumbs. Works out great. Not sure what I'll do with them, right now just collecting them. Also I have read/seen to use a denim/Jean needle and take smaller stitiches, like 1.6, with the paper, it will come off more easily.

I have a question. First of all, I am a novice, self taught sewist, so I am certainly no expert. But why wouldn’t you use strips of , say, an old sheet or a remnant to sew the scraps onto? I use my scraps a little like this. Although I put the seams on top, using decorative stitches and zig zag stitches (I like the rustic look of it). But if I were to do this method, I would sew to strips of fabric rather than paper, just because of the paper crumb mess. What is the benefit of the paper? Sincerely asking.
@MoonkinStitchery3 ай бұрын
Sure, you can do that. There are honestly hundreds of different ways, I'm just showing one method.

May I ask why you say "Do not iron it!" Is there a reason behind it other than convenience?

While you're piecing the iron can warp the paper causing it to distort. Thats why I iron at the end. ☺️

Thank you very much for sharing. I will most likely stich the blocks together then remove the paper. But to avoid removing the tiny bits of paper from the seam allowance area I will give myself 1/4 inch extra on all sides before I straighten the foundation. Naturally I would first have to ensure that there is extra fabric to trim off to allow for the 1/4 inch extra. So my seam allowance will not have any paper in at all and still maintain the 2 1/2inch width.
