I might suggest you make a test block out of leftover fabric or even thrift shop a cotton sheet/shirt etc and practice. Doesn’t have to be the best quality fabric to test out a block to gain some experience in piecing a new block. I have done this with old cotton clothes I was getting rid of just for the sake of learning. I say give it a try.

For the snowballed corners, could you cut the small squares into 2 triangles so you'd be able to use them for 2 rather than just 1? Or would that throw off the measurements?

Here is a MUCH easier way to cut this. Background: leave folded selvage to selvage. Cut 8.5 by WOF, it will already be stacked top facing up, bottom facing down which gives you the two opposing angles, cut the triangles across (spin the ruler each time). You will get 14 each strip. Cut each FQ 8.5 by 20, stack the bottom strip face down, the other face up. Cut two 8.5 squares, then cut the triangles across (spin the ruler), which gives you 8 with the opposing angles. That leaves you a strip that you can cut the remaining small squares. THIS is WAY faster cutting instead of cutting a bunch of 4.5 by 10 then cutting triangles. You do Not have to cut the notch out of both ends of the triangles, just the top. If you stack FQ's by twos, or fours, you can cut even faster, just be sure you have bottom layer(s) face down and top layer(s) face up. The "cut 4.5 x 10 inch strips" instruction in the written pattern is for the birds, and terribly inefficient. By cutting everything at 8.5 inch strips, you save time because you are only then cutting two sides for the squares, and one side for the triangles.
