Moonlander - what is it? Part 1, sand bike riding on Moreton Island

This is part 1 of 2 short clips about (very generally) the Surly Moonlander, on Moreton Island, Australia. I shot these over a weekend, around the northern half of the island. Will be planning another trip very soon to cover the southern half, again on the bike.

Moreton Island is very well situated for a weekend or longer for a fatbike adventure, camp at the many sites or stay at the resort. Either way, the Island is the perfect size for adventure.

I have had a Moon Lander for about 3 months now, they are awesome bikes; I just love the bike. Since it is winter half the year here I can't wait for the snow to start falling. The idiot that said he would rather spend $2,000 on a motorbike, just doesn't get it. A Moon Lander needs nothing, except you. You don't even have to worry about fuel stops, you could stay out in the wilderness for weeks at a time and when you manage to make your way back to civilization you look awesome because riding this type of bike will get you in shape super fast, I'm serious. All the girls won't even notice all the lazy guys who ride motor bikes, but they will be checking out the dude cruising along on his Moon Lander 24/7 at least that's been my experience, even though I never thought something like that would happen, its an unexpected benefit from riding a Moon Lander. The Steel frames are very strong, Steel tends to flex more than Aluminum giving you a smoother ride and since the tires are massive and have low air pressure that; the Moon Lander floats along like a Cadillac. The only issue I have with Surly is that since all their bikes are made of steel you would think they would treat the inside of the frame and fork tubes with anti rusting compound. For the price these things cost, you would think they would at least do that. Other than that, these bikes are built like tanks and are meant to last long term.

Why not do this on a mountain bike?! Lighter, faster....

your half right, a mountain bike is lighter. But its not faster when you sink in and spin the rear wheel, forcing you to walk. Some beaches are ridable with a standard mountain bike but most are not.

Hi Scott, I run basic SPD pedals - M525 I think they are, and MT91 boots. Couple this combo with Sea to Summit gaiters to keep the sand out of your boots and socks when walking up the dunes or in windy conditions. Goretex gaiters are better all year round and they breathe well enough for me. Spray a bit of WD-40 on the cleat after each trip, Tri-Flo lube the pivots on the pedals, this will keep the corrosion at bay.

Let me know what grip shifters model name please? That grip shifter with orange color state bar is nice design i think. I really wanna know about that products for building my moonlander. Model name or links please.

Its the standard shifter for a NuVinci CVT hub gear system.

Awesome bike! I recently bought a Mongoose Beast with the 26 x 4 tires to see if I liked the fat bike trend and it is a blast, I am in no way comparing it to the Surly, I know the Surly is a million times better but the $200 Mongoose Beast was more in line with my budget at the moment. I can't wait to find a deal on a used Surly. I want the Pugsley Necromancer.
