Being a fan of the original Moonlight Shadow and Dire Straits, this is great. Fun fact: a high school buddy bought the 45 of the original and took it back twice because he believed there was a scratch in the vinyl. He demanded to hear it in the record store before he took the third copy and it was then that he realised the skip was deliberate.

Great job. This already is a Dire Straits style song. The chords are very similar to the ones of Sultans of Swing, and the rhythm in similar as well. Two great songs for a perfect overlapping.

Obviously owes a lot to Sultans (and so I see where you're going with the ride cymbal), but actually, I'm getting getting third-album vibes off some of the bits in the solo. Thing is, this is an odd one for me. It's really great, a really well-observed reinterpretation, but I think...well, perhaps the best way to say it is that I'd have always loved it if this was how it had always been. But I really love Maggie Reilly's voice, and Oldfield's solo is one of my favourites of all time. I'm a bit surprised to discover that I feel like Moonlight Shadow is untouchable, but hey, every day's a school day!

This is very much in the style of early Dire Straits. I think this may be why Knopfler changed his style a bit starting at Making Movies and Love Over Gold, as I don't think he wanted his playing style to stagnate.
