Took me a bit to figure this out so I thought I'd share some of the details of the video I missed at first. Troubleshooting tips: [I'm using Blender 2.93.6] - In the beginning when you scale the plane x50 make sure you are IN Edit mode. - After you add the "Subdivision Surface" modifier, make sure you drag it to be ABOVE the "Displacement" modifier in the modifier list/hierarchy.

If you get a crazy mountain as soon as you add the first texture, and you don't know why, it's because you didn't scale up in Edit Mode. Many thanks!

When I try and render, it doesn’t look like it does in the render view. I have the camera in the right spot also. Would I be able to put a robot on the surface and make an animation? I’m a beginner to blender. Last question, why does it look so grainy for me.
@MidgeSinnaeve10 ай бұрын
Ok, that's a few questions, I'll try to answer as best I can. 1. Graininess: The most plausible answer here is that you have less render samples than me in your render settings. Check under viewport and render samples in your render settings. 2. Robot: Yes, you should be able to make an animation without issue. 3. The render looking different can be a number of things. If you're using displacement in your materials it might be down to the Dicing rate in your render settings. It's set higher by default when you do a full-on render and can cause things to look different.

I'm fairly new to blender and I'm teaching myself. Is there a way to bake this or render this so that you don't have to re render everytime you do something. What I mean is can I render it and then build stuff on top of it like a moon base? Or do I have to render everything all at once?
@MidgeSinnaeve3 жыл бұрын
You could use them just in the displacement modifier, but things will get pretty slow if you have a lot of subdivisions. The displacemnt map is actually already the most efficient way of handling such fine details.

Could you at some point explain the difference between roughness and specularity? I never touch the specular slider, I just don’t really get it. And every tutorial I’ve ever seen doesn’t really seem to get it either. “They both effect the shininess but in different ways”...... umm thanks. Like. What does it actually do?
@augm3nt3843 жыл бұрын
From what I can understand .. roughness is how rough or shiny .. specular the look of that shiny surface.
@MidgeSinnaeve3 жыл бұрын
Specularity is how strong the shiny component of the shader is basically, and the roughness, well... how rough the shine is. ;) Hope that makes sense.
@Nickimation3 жыл бұрын
Specularity is how much light gets reflected off the surface, roughness is the direction that the light gets reflected (scattered in random directions or closer to a perfect reflection).
@zzZzz495 Жыл бұрын
newbie here, 2 questions: 1, since the plane already had displacement modifier, why are we adding displacement again to the shader? I do see that by adding displacemeng to the shader, the render becomes more vivid. But I'm trying to understand wether the purpose is to add extra "artificial" vividness to the render even though it is not physically accurate? 2, by adding node wrangler to the shader, the shader can be scaled. But I don't understand in the demo, how the object modifier, thus the mesh geometry, was able to react to the scaling action as well. On my computer, the scaling only affected the shader itself, causing mismatch of the mesh geometry and shader (which logically makes sense to me, as the node wrangler is only "wrangling" the shader maps) What did I miss? Thanks~

i've got the same problem, do you have the solution ?
@angeloyanke150 Жыл бұрын
@@darknessbulletXD Hey! Yeah he explained how to fix it. So you have to be in experimental mode for cycles, that will enable a "subdivision" subsetting in the render settings. There you will see Dicing Rate Render with a render and a viewport option with the render set to 1 px and viewport set at 8 px I believe. Set the viewport dicing to 1 px and that should give you the cleaner sharper look like in the video :)
@DanielGrovePhoto3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for these they are incredible. Question: why does displacement method look better than the modifier method? Is it just me?
@MidgeSinnaeve3 жыл бұрын
Displacement can push the subdivisions quite a bit further as it optimizes it based on the resolution of your render.
@DanielGrovePhoto3 жыл бұрын
@@MidgeSinnaeve Ah thanks! It's unfortunate though because we have to use rendered view to see it. I do love seeing the results instantly with the modifier though. I wonder if I could just have the displacement modifier not render but the node displacement (which you say is better) will be in the final render view. As long as I have them matched up that might be a good trick. Thoughts on that?
@MidgeSinnaeve3 жыл бұрын
@@DanielGrovePhoto This used to be possible in Blender 2.79 where you had a toggle to show the scene with its render settings in the viewport but that toggle was removed. The only workaround I can think of is to have two planes, one for the viewport with a modifier and one for the render with different materials.

@MidgeSinnaeve3 жыл бұрын
@@s15kj I just tried it on 2.92 here and can't see any difference. Are you sure you scaled the plane in edit mode instead of object mode, that could be causing the vertical height issue. You could always select your plane and hit CTRL+A and select "Apply Scale" in your scene and the displace should behave a bit more normal. Make sure the displace is set to "UV" as well for the coordinates if the projection seems off.
