I recently was introduced to this tree, and its fruit - quite tasty. Leads to lucid dreams. The plant has a reputation for associating with evil spirits in some cultures. It grows really nicely in our conservancy in KZN South Africa (Outer West Durban area)

I'm realising that the internet at large confuses the wild medlar fruit with the Velvet wild medlar. I originally thought they were one thing, but apparently not because the fruit you're showing looks very similar but isn't quite the same as Velvet Wild Medlar. We call it "emantulwa". In my experience, we eat them when they're ripe and my granddad used to make a great juice from them...which can quickly ferment into alcohol if not stored in the fridge.

Corrections-the fruit is very nutritious, very tasty when ripe with no astringency at all, a good source of Vit C, proteins, carbohydrates, macro, and some trace elements for humans. A common fruit supplement from ancient cultures of Southern Africa. I won't go into its tons of pharmacological properties. Alcohol beverage making is not a popular trait of the fruit from its native cultures.
