Even if this is totally staged (and it probably is) I think it's good clean fun - and I learn something every episode I watch. The theme to me is DIY and these guys are geniuses at this. That's just no in dispute. And I have endless admiration for that enterprising spirit. 'Go Moonshiners!'

I spent over 20 yrs as a tv News Videojournalist with WFMY-TV in NC. Few more years off and on doing network freelance. Best of all I early on met good old country and mountain folk. I became known for filming stories told by the people in them. Hated having media people mouthing off.. rather have the real people, always. Got to know many wonderful musicians .. bluegrass, mountain etc. I myself was born in Belfast, N. Ireland and came to the US as an orphan. I became a reserve Army Officer so did quite a bit during my life. Must say I became close to many mountain folk,. Got married I SW Va. spent years knowing well known musicians who 8n turn introduced me to others. In fact before The state cops got Popcorn The last time I interviewed him. Plus a few others. Hell.. in one case a small group had still on the edge of town. They rented a room in sight of the Sheriffs dept. funny.. they would follow cops then make run. Mostly these were darn good folk.

People don't even go to jail for a long time for moonshining popcorn was only facing 18 months and they found him with like 700 gallons and the biggest still operation you could ever imagine

It's the type of charge. The sale and transport are both misdemeanor offenses with moonshine, where they try to get them is with a "manufacturing" charge. That's a felony offense. You can face some big time for that depending on the capacity of your operation, ie had they caught Popcorn at his still making a run, he'd have been facing a decade or two in prison

Reporters and people who put together documentaries have protection against being compelled to testify on confidential information. So they simply keep quiet on what they need to and the people allow them to film. If this was real all they would have to do is not air the episodes till months down the road. Then, all liquor would be sold and nothing used on the show could be proven to be real. However, the show is both real and fake. These guys really do make moonshine the traditional way and it's really good marketing that your moonshine was made out in the woods like the good ole days. Other than that, everything here is above board and taxed and permitted.
