For me, that is one of the major reasons why people got to thinking that he and Moon had some sort of relationship when they were younger (friends or lovers). That and his vague implication that he had fallen foul of their magic before. Shame they never followed up on that because I think it would've been interesting if they played it that once Toffee and Moon had trusted each other implicitly. So much so that Moon had confessed several royal secrets to him, and one of them was the Whispering Spell to destroy the Wand.

I could kind of see this making sense. I mean Moon and Toffee could have had romantic relations in the beginning of moons young life, but soon, because of Toffee being a monster, their relationship was probably seen as something shameful. It was probably bad at the time for monsters and mewmen to be together at the time because of the war they had. So because moon had to keep her queenly reputation from being ruined, she turned Toffee away and fought him in the war (not willingly) and then married her current husband. If this is true than that is just sad and unacceptable to break up a love and friendship as strong as that.

Here's my theory: Moon and Toffee were best friends as kids, and then developed romantic feelings for each other, but it was a secret. Moon didn't want her parents to know, but they found out anyway. Afterwards, they were forbidden to see each other. Moons parents pointed out some (not too) bad things that Toffee had done and twisted her mind to believe that Toffee didn't care about her, and was only using her. They did this in an effort to stop the whole Eclipsa thing from happening again, and it led to Toffee's heartbreak, and I think he probably tried to get revenge on Moon's parents for turning her against him, which led to their first big battle, with Moon defending her parents, and that led to their becoming bitter enemies forever. The End.

Bonus: you know those Mewman skulls on his shoulders? Well, in our adventures in Mewni, only the royal family(and ms heinous for some reason) appear to have the marks on their cheeks. So in addition to having Toffee seek revenge on Moon's parents, I think he killed her parents (possibly on accident) and somehow got to the point where he wore their skulls on his shoulders as trophies or something.

I think so, too. Because it would have been an interesting contrast to young moon and older regarding her feelings and prejudice against monsters because she was burned badly by one who was her first love and add insult to injury they were childhood lovers. I think it would have made Moon and Eclipsa's dynamic even more intriguing and drawn even more parallels with each other. They both became Queens young and lost their mothers, too. Both fell in love with one. The main difference is that one chose to forsake duty for love while other forsaked love for duty. I feel like it would have made conversations between them so much compelling, especially when they learn what happened to Eclipsa daughter. Both woman get to see through eachother what they fates would have been had they chose to go in the opposite direction of their choices. Toffees, he was already a good villain it would add an extra layer to his dynamic with moon and their enmity. She had to bring herself to harm him in such a way and a good way to explain why she hesitated on making the kill needed.

Honestly, I think a big part of the appeal for me of this ship is that it would've added so much more characterization to Toffee where it was SEVERELY lacking. Toffee felt so ripe with potential, and, imo they didn't really do anything with it (am about halfway through season 4 at the moment of writing this). I've heard they wanted him to be a Magneto type character, doing terrible things to try and elevate Monster kind. Well, I never got that in the end. They never gave me an impression that he was out for anyone but himself. In fact, I almost thought it would've been a great twist if it turned out that he wasn't a villain at all. What if he was trying to change things peacefully, and was hoping that Star would be more open minded than her mother. It would've meant the series going in a different direction, but with how they were pushing the "monsters aren't naturally evil and are victims" angle, I think it could've been interesting.
