Great video! That Moonshine and the Earth Quaker sound awesome to me!

Awesome video, majority of my bass board is not bass pedals and I love it. Need more videos like this from everyone experimenting with bass sounds

Great video. Some advice I got from a David Barber video: to get different flavours of overdrive, you can use the volume and especially the tone controls on your bass/guitar. The resulting tones are way different from those you get by only using the tone knob(s) on the pedal. That’s because of overtones (and undertones) that come off the strings. Especially roundwounds. You’ll hear that there are way more possible tones between the (bass)guitar, pedal(s) and the amp! Most bassplayers think their bass only sounds great with the (passive) tone control way open. Well, that’s not the case... 🖖

My moonshine v2 just showed up and i couldn’t be happier with it. Such an underrated gem as far as overdrives that kill on bass.

Great video! Fun fact: while the JHS Moonshine is not a “bass overdrive”, once upon a time, it actually was. Back in the day JHS had a bass overdrive pedal called the Low Drive. Sales of the Low Drive weren’t stellar.. so, JHS rehoused and rebranded the Low Drive, called it the Moonshine, and marketed it for guitar and bass. Sales (must have) improved, and here we are today.

In the 1970s, Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath primarily achieved his distorted bass sound using a **Dallas Arbiter Rangemaster treble booster** and sometimes a **Tycobrahe Parapedal wah** pedal. He also relied on driving his amplifiers, particularly his **Laney amps**, into natural distortion by cranking up the volume. This combination of gear contributed to his signature gritty and heavy bass tone.

Thanks for sharing the MXR Fod. I couldn't find any videos on this pedal.

Thank You For The off app Demo !!! if you pop the back off the MXR FOD, there are two trimmer pots inside... those are the drive and level controls for the cleaner crunch tone ( c.c.w. blend ) so you can drop the gain there to get a cleaner trough.

Good vid! It’s a real problem we all face if we use overdrive..I’m mainly a studio guy for the past 45 years so had to be versatile. When I toured with The Miracles I always used a bit of that Jamerson overdriven sound for the Motown stuff. I use the Boss LS-2 to blend my clean sound with my overdriven sound and that solves the loss of bass problem. I also have an EQ on each end of my board to make whatever adjustments I need to make to the signal going in and going out. I do like the JHS Moonshine as an overdrive pedal as well as their Morning Glory. Josh understands the issue we face. But I really recommend the LS-2 and run your effects in Loop A and a clean in Loop B and use the blend setting. It’s the best I’ve found so far.

I've had more guitar overdrives/distortions on my bass rig than bass overdrives/distortions. MXR FOD is certainly a keeper! A modded Boss DS-1 (all seeing eye mod) is always on my rig too!

Great job and very informative video. There is also whole selection cheap Boss pedals that work with as bass overdrive. Maybe that worth checking too in the future.

The moonshine and Westwood were the best in my opinion. They sounded like natural tube drive.

That was one of the most useful videos I’ve seen in a long time! I’ve been thinking of using a non-bass specific pedal for a while now and this was helpful. Have you tried using the nobels preamp on bass? I built the andromeda kit from aionfx and I love it for bass. That Friedman sounded great I thought. Originally I was interested in the moonshine pedal and this gave me a good idea of what it sounds like with bass. Thanks for the video! How about some more like this?! Maybe use a pick and also roll the volume back and see how the pedals clean up? Just a thought. 🙌🏻

I second the clean up thought. Thars what I want to use an OD for.

Tough to find a good OD for Bass, as that mid bump and rumble filter on most models doesn't work.

The fulltone fulldrive 3 in comp cut mode is amazing on bass. I also use the Westwood & the jptr fx jive. My board is slowly becoming just overdrives 😂

I'm not confused. JHS The Kilt V2. If you put your choice of any of the Echoplex 3 preamp copies in front of it it's even better.

Has nobody on KZbin heard of eq? How on earth do you think all the bass greats got the sound they got with pedals designed mostly for guitar?The rules of engagement for electric bass. Its a juvenile instrument. YOU make your own rules! If it sounds good to you it IS!
@ileutur6863 Жыл бұрын
Its true that you can add back bass frequencies after they've been cut by a pedal, but its not that simple. You don't get a punchy and defined low end, its a lot more prone to just sounding muddy. Goof if you want that type of tone, but it is a compromise a lot of us don't like making
@gorillafunk725 Жыл бұрын
@@ileutur6863 Our whole existence is a compromise. I hear what you are saying. That is why I modify my pedals when needed with a dry blend circuit if its necessary. Behringer SF 300 is my only modded pedal. The rest I don't bother. Cliff Burton used a lead guitar pick up in his modded Rickenbacker & all his effects were guitar effects. Go on tell the world how HIS tone as recorded is a shitty, muddy compromised mess. Or how Lemmy used unmodified Marshall guitar stacks. Go on shout it to the world how HIS tone was $#!t. How did they make it work? EQ! Made those " compromises" rule the bass world. Not only that show me one mix where the bass isn't " compromised" to sit correctly in the sonic picture painted by the overall sound. You clearly have zero clue as to the history of or recorded technology of the art. And your comment makes no sense unless the only person you have to please is yourself in your own bedroom. And if you wish to argue. That's fine I am 100% right and will be for the forseeable future and you will always be wrong no matter what you say or do. Cause that's the reality we all live in. Including EVERY recording we listen to to make these comments on.
