Moorish Idol Fish has been in this Saltwater Reef tank for almost 2 months. I had problems with him in the begining due to not getting along with other tank mates, and not eating. He is now fully aclimated and loves his new home. By NewYorkSteelo.

@newyorksteelo I don't necessarily think that 18 fish in a 90 gallon is "overstocked," but honestly my own philosophy is that a "multitude of water changes covers a multitude of problems." I currently have a 120 and I'm planning to stock it up to about 20 to 22 fish, but my schedule is 15 gallons a week which turns into 15 gallons about 3 times a month. You're going to have to do some water changes.

hey steelo i love your vids in my oppinion u should get a 300 gallon tank because you could keep lots of different bigger fish like groupers, i just upgraded my groupers to a 1000 gallon tank and they love it ur vids are very helpful keep it up. the bigger the tank the better

I have some questions to ask you regarding tanks: 1. A ready made weir (ie. in the middle that runs the whole depth of the tank) 2 Drill holes into the tank and use something like the X-aqua inout (what do you think of these?) 3. Drill holes into tank and have a small weir that doesn't run the whole depth. Which of these is better?What is yours in the tank above?Also your return pipes is under the water, some people have it above? What is the difference or reason?More oxygen if above?

I heard even professional fish keeper have trouble keeping them for about 9 months. The Whimple Fish looks a lot like a Moorish Idol but a lot easier to care for. I hope your Moorish Idol lasts for years. You have a great tank.

Hi Adrian. I do in fact reply to most all comments and questions in due time. At the time of this video, I was feeding it New Life Spectrum Marine pellets, Brine Shrimp, Misys Shrimp and flakes. I began with Live Bryne shrimp and feed him often until he took to eating and then switched it up until he ate all of the others.

Hey steelo, first off props for showing us that beautiful idol anyone who has a idol that healthy and fit is definitely serious in the game, my question to you is i'm setting up a 220 gal.fowlr i want to go with four tang a powder blue, purple, hippo, and blonde naso, I know almost everyone says when you go with multiple tang you should put them in at the same time so what do you do take a chance with not quarantining being that most tanks are set up to quarantine a fish at a time?

so heres wat have so far..... a 125 gallon tank, 135 lbs live rock, alot of live sand( not sure how much), a protein skimmer, 40 gallon tank( for sump), 1 overflow box, a return pump, and some good lighting for the refugium which will house macro algae and snails and others. so that should be all i need right? OH also i have a RO system.

if a got a 120 gallon FOWLR would i need a sump?it would have a protien skimmer, loads of live rock, and a deep sand bed, and eventually a refugium. OH and a couple wavemakers.

All the fish in this tank eventually grew too big for it and so they were purchased by a friend and placed in a 180g reef. Its still thriving in that fish only tank today. Proper acclimation is key to initial success however, this fish can only be kept for about a year or two as a juvenile in a 90g. It will eventually need a bigger home. Yes they can be kept in captivity long term as long as they are healthy to begin with, fed well, and offered a peaceful environment. Have fun and good luck.

How do you go about catching the fish out in order to put them into the sump? Catching them out can really stress them out as well as putting them into a 20l sump w/ 8" of water

i usually catch new fish out of the bag with my hand and put them in the tank, if i put him in the fuge and after a week put him up top and the yellow tang starts to kick his ass, how then do i catch one of them out, i was thinking of putting the yellow tang in the sump before i buy the powder blue and then put the powder blue up top and after a week or so re-introduce the yellow tang back in

I'm so confused on this gallon vs size on a fish. Ok if a fish they say need a bigger tank what are they talking about the length of what they swim or the about of gallon they swim in. Like a 55gal and a 90gal can be the same length that have to swim. So I don't see the difference.

Hey NYS, I just got some new fishes for my tank. Two small clowns, a tiny blue tang and a small coral beauty. The clowns are cb and ate a few pellets but the other two just pecked at some live rock and didn't eat any pellets. I am feeding NLS TheraA. None ate anything from the algae clip. Should I be worried? Also, once the pellets dropped to the sand even the clowns won't eat it. I got the fish yesterday.

How long did you have him in all? I am still not convinced that these fish should be sold/housed. I hope you prove me wrong. I would really like to have one. There are still others like the leopard wrasse and the clown tang that, like the Idol, their death to life ratio with in a six months are so low that I am not sure that they should be sold/captured. ok then thats what i'll do sensai, i actually bought the 10k lights and they are really yellow and then i took 1 out to compare the spectrum and it happened to be the bad one and it worked! so now i got both radiums in and workig, so ill take back the 10k's and get a powder blue

i just got into the hobby. I dont know much. how do i clean my sand? Everytime i move my sand the fish seem to get stressed. the water also never seems to be free from free floating debri. Any help? I also have to ad daily water to my sump tank, do u think that its leaking or is it evaporation?

Hi Steelo. I have tried to copy your set up as much as possible as I was impressed that you don't have to do water changes. One question: Do you get much growth from your fish without water changes? My LFS said that fish won't grow well with no WCs due to a build up of a growth limiting hormone.

The fish in this tank were raised in this setup and eventually outgrew it. After a few years, they had to be placed in a 180g system cause they grew too big :)

Hey Steelo, lovely video again..my foxface used to eat the same way but suddenly it died without any warning....so im planning to get a moorish idol to fill the foxface's space. My nitrite, ammonia, nitrates, phosphates are all at bay because of regular maintenance and the refugium. Please advice what do you feed the moorish idol? Oh also as you said 90 gal tank, 18 fishes. I have 60 gal cube SPS tank with 9 fishes....LOL

Hi there ive recently added moorish idol 3 days ago. Since then hes been picked on by my sailfin tang. The fighting has stopped but hes stopped eating n got spots all over his body aswell as popeye. I dont know what to do. Every other fish is fine and been in the tank for 9 months. Pls help thanks
