I also have an older version that was used in the late 60's? that is a single plane factory 2 barrel that I have always wanted to try out on something. These old 318s need all the airflow you can give 'em and the BBD carbs run so good its hard to justify a 4 barrel

I had trouble with cylinder 8 on my engine always being a little lean. I tried putting new gaskets and various types of sealer used when I reinstalled but always had the same problem. I was forced to daily drive the car anyways and eventually the lean condition made the compression lower in that cylinder. When about the 3rd or 4th time I had the intake off I gave a much harder look and noticed the port on cylinder 8 had a spot that almost looked melted or pitted in a way. I took it to the machine shop and had it planned and checked for cracks. the guy told me that spot was a manufacture defect ad it looked as if it was a "factory repair" where they welded a defect in the corner of the port. He suggested I use the thicker composite gaskets and grey rtv. Said for what ever reason gray seemed to work best. Since then I have had no issues. Just something to be aware of.

A few things i have done with intakes. The EGR system only affects the engine at idle, above that it has little effect. What the system does is to introduce a neutral (non combustible ) gas so that the engine will function at a very lean F/A mix. Drawback: Those holes & the one fitting are obstructions to air flow. I remove the plug that is under the carb, tap the 2 holes for a pipe plugs and insert a pipe plug that uses an internal hex wrench to tighten. I can supply the sizes if you want. A big problem with those EGR ports is that they can often be clogged with carbon and if you don't plug them a sizable chunk of carbon could find it's way into a rebuilt engine. A manifold off of an engine that has been burning a lot of oil can have a lot of carbon buildup. If you have to clean those EGR passages: Plug both sides with something & pour paint stripper into the large hole under the carb & let it sit overnight. Another method that I have seen on U-tube but have not tried: Use a common hardware variety propane torch & heat one end of the passage until the carbon starts to burn then start blowing air through the passage with an air nozzle. The burning carbon turns into a blow torch as the compressed air is forced through the passage. I have watched the process but never tried it, seems to work. I have seen intake manifolds the had the entire heat crossover passage totally blocked with carbon. On those I start the cleaning process with long twist drills then proceed from there. On the cover plate at the bottom of the intake. There can be a bunch of krud buildup under that. The plate is held in place by 2 little drive screws, screws that have coarse threads and are driven in place by a hammer. They can be removed by grinding a small flat on both sides & removing them with a set of vice grips. They have right hand threads. Tap the holes with 1/4" X 20 tap, install short 1/4" screws or bolts, tack weld one side to keep them in place. That crud can find it's way into a new engine. If you should get a manifold that has been sand blasted it is imperative to remove that plate because there will be grit under the plate. On cleaning parts: Oven cleaner works well on large parts, even engine blocks. On heads & valve covers I use a different method. Get a good 5 gallon plastic bucket & put in a 4 gallon mix of 50% water/ purple industrial cleaner that can be purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot. You have to do half of the head or valve cover at a time but it works great. Drawback: The solution loses it's ability to dissolve grease & carbon at colder temps. You are doing the same kind of engine builds that I have been doing for years to keep my old vans & trucks running. Going to try & keep up with this 318 build. Interesting.
