Hey Derek, this is a special episode for me. My little boy was born on Sept. 1. I just finished watching this video with him asleep on me, making it his very first VGG episode. My 3 year old already asks to watch “dad’s car show” with me, and she asks questions the whole time. She’s already a little gearhead. Your approach to revivals has helped me in my journey getting my dad’s car back on the road for the first time in 34 years. I’m looking forward to packing the family into the old ‘66 Mustang, and just going to town. Anyways, thanks again for what you do. I appreciate you providing a place where I can spend some good quality time with my little kids, while also seeing some good examples of being a master mechanic and a great dad.

I've ended up with almost the same situation brother. Started watching Derek when my daughter was about 1 week old, found his channel when I was at home with her asleep on me while my wife was sleeping in. That's awesome! My 6 year old daughter watches with me, has been for a couple years now. I found the channel way back with the Rocky Chevelle and have been hooked since, though my daughter waited a little longer to get involved. She used to call it "silly Derek and the cool cars" but now she just straight up calls it "vice grip garage" all matter of fact like. I have a couple old rigs I'm, um 'restoring', and she loves watching me work and wants to help Dad too so she can be like Derek lol. Keep those memories coming man, they grow WAY too fast

Hey VGG big fan here! That Pontiac GTO in the background, also known as the Holden Monaro, was built right here in my home state of South Australia. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of the relaunched Monaro myself, it's unfortunate that many in the US don’t fully appreciate just how iconic the Monaro name truly is! The guy who built it explaining why it is like it is, and giving heads-up on the things that are/might go wrong with it is awesome. Sometimes when you look at a project, no matter what it is (car, computer program, doghouse, etc.) you see something another fellow did and thing "what in the world?!" but many times they had darn good reasons for doing it that way no matter how odd it looks later. It is really neat to learn those reasons and understand where what you're looking at came from.

This is such a cool rig, I hope it makes a lot of fans happy to catch a ride in it.

Done many old rope rear main seals in the past. Use a punch, and turn the crank by hand while pushing with the punch. Once it's out the other side enough to get needle nose vice rips on it, pull on the vice grips while continuing to turn the crank by hand. Will come right out every time. 5 minutes max.

It was a great lesson. Got bit by the era design suited for points ignition: when cranking, "run" gets disconnected on most 1971 rides. Only the starter solenoid and motor get 12v, and a return [R] post off the starter backfeeds the ignition coil primary directly without the ballast resistor. So... any backfeed going back inside the cab is now going through the ballast resistor, and no computer is happy there. Lets say the high load of cranking pulls 12v down to 10v. That's fine for the starter motor, but after going through the ballast resistor, maybe that's 8.5v in the cab. Problem? Typical zener diode rating in a power supply is for 9.8v and a computer likely has an undervoltage problem that stops the show.

Do yourself a favor, When you have to work outside on the gravel drive way. get yourself a large cardboard box to spread out under your truck. Something like the size of a dryer box. Or even a piece of old carpet. Then if you drop something it won't disappear into the gravel. also cardboard is easier on your knees. But, what i do is buy moving blankets from harbor freight, the medium seize, ones, they work best. and you can keep them in your trunk, for on the side of the road repairs. Mine have been through many oil changes, and still look like new. Just shake them off and fold them, toss them back in the trunk. or you can roll them up and put wire ties around the to take up less room. if you ruin it your only out ten bucks. throw it away and get you a new one. lot softer on old bones. even works on cold concrete, in the winter inside your garage. I used to go to Lowe's and get my dryer boxes for free, they just throw them in the cardboard crusher. You open it up and you can pull an engine and trans, and catch all the mess. reaches from the front of the car to the middle. on my truck the box fits perfectly, between the wheels. when your done drag it outside and burn it. and your garage floor is still clean.

My most obscure one to share is the TRUE definition of a 'Wobble Pop". You can learn it too while Derek repaired a car at Krang's garage (Likely fun for his brother Craig that doesn't talk much) in West central NoDak. Derek explained that you open a soda pop (usually a cola) and take a big swig. Then replace that empty volume with Wild Turkey...or w/e cheap whiskey you got. I have not heard it defined every again.

Thanks for the new video. I have a suggestion for working on the Monster truck. Put hinges & cables on the bumper and have it drop down like a Tailgate. All you'd need is some type of sheet and you can use the brushguard as a stand to work from.

Awesome turnout in Dunnville last night. That was super cool. While I did not want to smother you like some did at first, I chose to give you your space, I had a chance to holler at a feller while he took a break from signing autographs. Asked him how his knee was, I noticed it might have been a scooch tender. Poor old boy just acknowledged in my direction HEY! that someone said his name, and went right back to signing autographs. I can only imagine how cooked he was at that point from talking to people for the past two hours. I smiled to myself :) all good. Didn’t get to meet him in person, because he is really dedicated to the people. Hope to have the chance again some day Derek! Maybe then i’ll have a chance of getting my 84 Supra in front of you again :). Ps, this boy is slimmer in person than the camera’s have ya think! Hope you enjoyed Canadaiuhh!

1:42:20 Those solder seal connectors are awesome! Get them just hot enough to see the bright shiny silver wicking up the wires, and you've got a good solid reliable connection. I've been dragging these things through the excessive amount of Ohio road salt for upwards of five years now with great success.

I used just one 10 micron filter, but it's a BIG spin on stye one off a Cat Bulldozer :) I wanted to buy the fancy wiring module, and Holley Fuel pump, but they didn't have anything in stock and it was 5 weeks wiat. SO I just got the basic set u, and bought an in tank fuel pump an routed it with the Regulator in the return line (used the bg Holley regulator though)

If you use a corkscrew seal puller and turn the engine over with a ratchet at front you can pull that seal right out. When I used to mud race we didn’t use transfer cases we used chain drive because transfer case couldn’t handle 2400 hp using paddle tires but chain could

Great job on the exhaust bends. I was a millwright for a long period of time before I got into running heavy equipment, and we had to bend grease lines for the caster equipment in the mill. Not easy to learn where to position the pipe in relevance to the dye to get the proper length for your bends. Looks good man 🇺🇸

My pertronix Ignitor had the same issue with low volts during cranking shutting the hall effect sensor down. I did the same thing (Well, using the relay) and I got the volts quite a bit higher (Measured at the coil since that's where I pick up the positive 12v's from the relay I put in). In my case, it is an old ford gas tractor though, and I think the starter is getting tired. But I'm also rewiring the key because when I hooked up the lone wolf 2000 and completely bypassed the key, it started a lot better. A feller's learning a few things from Dr. Derek!
