I own three moraknife companions. Two carbon steel one is the thicker blade... One stainless... Then I have a older mora fishing stainless knife.. back when the company's name was FROST ... That resides in my tackle box.. none of them have ever let me down!

You can use a ranger band to secure it in the sheath, it's a great way to make sure you don't lose it.

Get the right size O ring , or an elastic hair band used for pony tails. Slide it up under the belt clip. When not in use , slip it over the end of the knife handle...much more secure and easy to remove.

Great review! I got into Mora knives about a year ago. The companion regular and heavy duty and they have become my main knives I carry when I camp and hunt. Simple, they stay sharp, and easy to touch up in the field. I have more expensive knives, but none that shine like the Mora Companion. I fixed the sheath with by adding retainer strap and a dangler. Good to go.

Before ordering my first Mora Companion I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to spend money on a "cheap" knife like that. I much prefer spending more and get a tool that will do the job for years than buying the same crap over and over again because it keeps breaking. Then one day one of my friends showed me his and I immediately fell in love with it and ordered one. It's been 4 years now and that little guy is still in amazing shape. Moras aren't cheap, they're inexpensive. Big difference. The Companion has become my favorite knife and it keeps me from buying much more expensive ones. Sure, it doesn't look good and you can't brag about it, but when I start using it it's like no other knife exists and all I will ever need is a Mora. Absolutely love it.

I have several Moras and I love em for general bushcraft and camp tasks.I've found that they can take alot more abuse than what most people think they can. That being said If I was going into something that could turn into a potential survival situation I would take something else with me like my BK9. Keep up the great vids!

Alexis(SP). You are incorrect. There is the Mora Companion stainless steel Companion High carbon as reviewed by Bryan. Then there is the thicker one that I have a full 1/8 inch thick blade also high carbon steel. I have two Mora knives the 1/8th inch high carbon Companion, and the Fire Knife with Light My Fire steel inside the handle. I have no idea why Mora knives get no respect. They are fabulous knives and can deffinately take a beating.

Put the sheath under a running hot tap for a minute or two then dry it off and squash it a little. It will hold the knife fine once its cooled. Repeat occasionally if needed.

I bought one for my girlfriend for her hiking backpack and she loves it. I used it once and bought one for me. It's a great "better than no knife" and I like that's it's super light. We got lucky and both of ours have perfect retention, go figure. Like always, thanks for the vid.

I used the coarse belt on my work sharp to make the spine on the back of the knife flat. I did it free hand with just a little pressure so it would not put a curve on the edges. Some people use a flat file, but that was taking too long.

Thank you, Brian, for this review. I delayed buying a Mora simply because I felt it was not a serious survival knife. I own several knives, machetes, axes. On a recent backpacking excursion my friend brought his Mora Companion and impressed me with how versatile its uses are especially with fire starting preparation techniques. Needless to say I spent my $13 and ordered one from Amazon. I 'll mount it on the sheath of one of my military machetes along with a sharpener and a fire rod. Great video!

Hey Bryan on Amazon there is a knife brand I ran across called BPS knives they are made in the Ukraine. I picked one up for $15 and it's an amazing bargain. Comes with leather sheath, blade is carbon steel and wooden handle. I highly recommend picking one up!

I have used Moras for years. I have never broken one. Most people that are unhappy with them, I find, have unrealistic expectations of them. I carry a heavier blade on my hip and have a Mora (or two) for finer wood work like feather sticks.

Just a little correction to the blade thickness: The Mora Companion is available in C100 carbon steel and 12C27 stainless steel. The carbon steel blade is 2mm thick while the stainless steel blade is 2.5mm. The additional thickness of the stainless steel blade is meant to compensate for the lower toughness so both knives can take roughly the same amount of abuse before the blade snaps. The Mora Companion Heavy Duty is based on the same knife. It is only available in carbon steel with a blade thickness of 3.2mm. The handle of the HD is similar to the normal model but it has quite some more belly which people with very small hands may not like.

One more thing, there's also a difference between the blade spines. The Companion carbon has a rough, unfinished spine, the Companion stainless has a polished and slightly rounded spine, so does the Heavy Duty.

Here on South Africa you can get the old Mora Clipper. It's made by Bahco which is a subsidiary of Mora. It has a stainless steel blade and in South Africa it costs R199. (R200).

Hey Bryan, I have been looking for a smaller second knife, one that is smaller than my big reissue k-bar and bigger than my pocket knife. I can chop small trees down with that k-bar but it is a little awkward for some tasks. So after watching this video I ordered one. My, my am I pleased. I went ahead and sharpened the spine so it works with a ferro rod and I am very happy with it. I am going to go ahead and order a second one. Thanks again, Leslie

Say Heah Brian, I still use my Frost Mora as a spare since it's still in great shape even after all these years. But recently I bought a few new Morals and I bought a Mora 510 and I luv the fact it's thinner and a Mora Classic #1, I also got a Mira 2000 and the Hatchet. I think the 2000 is a awesome knife even though it's a stainless, 12Cr27 is actually a good stainless steel for a knife blade. But the pleasant surprise was when I got the Mora Forest Exclusive #277 what a beauty. It's a handmade Mora that looks a little like the Classic #1 but a little more slender but it feels great in your hand. I wear a large glove too. The blade is laminated and the hardware is brass, the bolster and pommel and the stick tang goes all the way through. A piece if art but very functional. It comes in a beautiful leather sheath. I wanted to get the #311 but it's discontinued grrrrrrrr anyhow I'm glad I was able to get my #277. Great review as usual, Thanx.

Good review! I just got the SS version. Mine takes 2 hands to open so I suspect they make a tighter sheath now. I have 2 other Moras and like them very much. I have a number of knives including a Randall but this is a great backup knife that you can throw into a glove compartment, backpack, kitchen drawer, tool box, etc. and know you have a quality knife close at hand. I'm looking forward to your other videos.

If needed Mora makes a Morakniv Companion Spark that has a fire starter that twist-locks into the handle. I have a S/S Mora companion that I used to (baton) trim my daughters X-Mass tree down with, forgot my tree saw. I have a 550 paracord wrap on the sheath (blaze orange) so as not to loose it...its green like this one.

In regards to the sheath problem, I wrapped a shoelace around the handle, and now I can do rock climbing with the knife, going upside down and stuff. Plus it gives you some cord to work with. Would probably be bette to do it with paracord, but I don't have any at the moment.

I love this knife! Used it while serving in the army for 1 year. It's a true beater knife that you can abuse and baton the crap out of and rarely have to resharpen it!. Unfortunately it has a tendency to slip out of its sheath just like the video shows, that's how I lost mine!

I own more knives than I care to explain. I live for the outdoors. Between hunting, scouting, camping, hiking, fishing, and wheeling. I spend a ton of time outdoors and rely on knives. Full tang is important to me. 98% of the time. For the price I paid for a Morakniv Companion, I would never ever complain. Not saying this video is really complaining. It's light, it's handy, it came to me shaving sharp. Literally comfortably shaving sharp. The retention on my knife was actually incredible. It holds very tight regardless of temperature. This is not an axe. It's a camp knife/fishing knife. I love it for fishing, and cleaning fish. The grip is great even when my hands are cold and wet with slippery fish guts etc. Dollar for dollar, against some of my more favorite blades, I have to call this a winner. I was skeptical, but thoroughly impressed. Every knife has a purpose. This knife serves it's backup camp role amazingly well for the price. Buy it and never regret the money spent. It's a no-brainer.

Survival On Purpose I have seen a few other people mention the brittleness as well, so i dont think it's limited to mine. I never though about sending it in for warrenty since it was so cheap and i still sometimes use it for small things around the house.

I just added a strip of hook & loop to secure it in place, mine does spark pretty good as well...strange. Mine came with a built in fire rod and it works very good. I don't use it a lot but for processing game and you can get them sharp no doubt. I agree, it's no bushcraft knife but a good backup to keep in your pack.

I bought a Companion HD myself. Just a few bucks more and you get a slightly thicker blade (3.2 mm vs. 2.5 mm for the reviewed knife) for that little bit more insurance. Still a cheap sheath but it's clear Mora put the money into the blade for these knives. Molded plastic handle, cheap sheath, but a good quality blade for a budget or starter bushcrafting knife.

Sorry, I just purchased a mora companion on Amazon. I had to cancel the original order because it was the SS regular version. I reordered the HD because the description said this one was Carbon steel. After viewing your video I went to Mora web site and they confirmed the difference. I didn't see a regular companion of Carbon steel on their site. Maybe I just didn't look far enough down the line!

I absolutely LOVE the Mora Companion, but have to agree that the weak point of this knife is the sheath. A piece of bicycle inner tube will solve the retention problem though.

I own way too many blades....ESEE, TOPS, Beckers.....and many folders. And about 10 or so Mora's. And I'll tell you what, Mora's are GREAT knives! They just WORK all of the time! The sharpest edge from a factory that I have ever seen. Absolutely great work horses! The stainless models are NOT hard to keep sharp, and stay "Clean" in a wet environment. Can't say enough about Mora.

Say Heah Brian, Or a person could buy a used knife. I periodically visit my Pawn Shop, last week I bought a Case Pawnee in excellent condition, but without a sheath. A few days ago I found a original basket weave sheath with the flap over that the Pawnee originally came in. I still got the two at a great price, Yeah for a little more than a Mora, and your right a Mora for the $$$ is a great buy. But I had a Case Jungle Machete Knife that turned out to be a near perfect match. The reason I mention this is now I sort of have a combo and I will use the Case Jungle Machete Knife as a Summer Long Knife to continue my Afternoon Delight which is a hot cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato. I also added my Wooden Fiskar Saw, the set wasn't all that expensive, The Case Pawnee is a very thin blade that makes feathers very esdy, The 10" Jungle Machete Knife is suitable as a Long Knife, We'll it's the minimal size I would use but it too is very sharp and the two knives complement eachother quite well. The Wooden Handle Fiskar is just the right touch to add to the set and as I can remember it wasn't that expensive. A set like this might cost a person under $150.00 But you get a very nice functioning Trio that make great conversation around a camp fire. Actually you can get a Mira 2000 with the Mora Hart Cher and the Baccho Laplander for around $85.00 plus tax and shipping if you want, But I think for a Orange set combo only, The green like I have might be a few dollars more. It's a awesome Lite Trio. But with the brambles growing and travel a bit tougher, I opted for a set with a long knife. I has the Case Jungle Machete Knife, and now I was able to team it up with my almost new condition Pawnee, Oh, The Case Jungle Machete Knife is almost new condition also, Yeah it's mint, so I have a mint condition set of some good quality cutting implements for a reasonable price. That what I wanted to say. But your right Brian, a Mora is just hard to beat. Good job, Thanx, Brain.

Thanks for the video enjoyed watching it. Excellent knife. The Companion definitely needs a new sheath however. I like how simple it is but when new they are difficult to draw from the sheath as the belt loop is too tight with the handle, preventing a good grip when trying to pull it out and use the thumb ramp. And then as you showed, in colder weather the sheath actually becomes looser, and over time some have reported that the sheath also becomes looser. Other than that it is an excellent deal.

Jack Black I totally agree. The Bushcraft Black sheath seems to be a little better, although a very similar design. Time will tell how it fares. Thanks for watching.

I don't understand using the baton perpendicular to the grain? Why would you not beaver chew the wood and snap it when it gets weak? Using a baton, to me, is always with the grain to get smaller diameter pieces and expose dryer wood in the interior etc. Not trying to be smart b__ , just curious. Thank you for the video though..... I own 4 of these and love them.... Wouldn't be scared to fight with one......I'd be paralyzed that I was in a fight....lol....but the tool would work.

Just testing the blade. and if you needed to cut down a standing sapling it might be difficult to "beaver chew" it.

Mr5cylinders I always take an axe when camping but I rarely carry it with me if I leave the campsite to go exploring or if I'm just going on a day hike. Statistically, a whole lot of "survival" situations started on what was intended to be a day hike or some sort of "other than regular camping" scenario. That's why I really want to make sure my knife is capable of doing some pretty heavy duty stuff if I really need it to. Honestly, I'm not saying the Mora is my first choice for that either, although it is really tough for a partial tang knife. But that's why I did a baton test with it, so I would know what it is capable of if necessary. Be prepared.

Hmm... mine don't fall out even if shaken vigorously (I tested all 4 I own) And who cares they are not full tang? I have yet to see a handle come off a Mora knife or a broken blade with normal use, and even some abuse. I've been using one in the kitchen, in combination with a hammer, to split ribs and other bones, and it's been going strong for years. What more can one expect from a 10 dollar knife??

Cheap fix is to wrap 2 to 4 layers of electric tape around the handle so it sits better in the sheath... or get a leather one. These are cheap knives but they last a long time and I wouldn’t be upset if I lost it as opposed to an Esee

Say Heah, Steven's, Yeah, I also have a Mora Garberg. The rough thing about it. I have a hard choice between picking either my Garberg or my Vintage Blind Horse Bushcrafter both are great Bushcraft Knives. So far I use my Garberg on wet rainy trips, other than that, it's a rough choice which one to bring along. Oh, so far I've been asking my 2Hawks Warbeast Tomahawk and my Wicked Tough Saw and I still consider this set a Lite Carry. I also have a real old Mora with a wooden handle with a metal pommel and hand guard. It's a thick blade and tge leather sheath has a metal trim. Also I have a older Frost Mora Clipper 840 MG. That sort of started it for memory Also I have a very Lite Carry Hiking Trio with my Mora 2000 and my Mora Hatchet and my Bacho Laplander which I use with just my Haversack. It's a great set for my Afternoon Delight's too.,,. p

Survival On Purpose What I mean is that when you are out in the woods camping you don't usually shake the knife until it falls out of the sheath. I don't think the knife will fall out of its sheath unless you shake it like you did. Also thanks for replying

+TheGoldenSaber Yes you could but that would have a high likelihood of dulling or damaging the cutting edge. in an emergency situation you do what you have to but I would prefer to keep my knife sharp, especially in a survival scenario.

Someone told me about a Light My Fire version of this knife that has a sharpened spine and included ferro rod, but I will be buying the regular version. I'm worried that having a hollow handle would compromise it's strength for hard use, as demonstrated in your video. Liked and subbed. Keep up the good work!

It’s not a survival knife. It’s not meant for batoning or chopping down trees. It’s a bushcraft knife and is meant to be carried with a hatchet and a saw.
