High carbon steel is only needed if you want to strike flint (the rock) with your knife. I think that many people use flint and ferro rod interchangeable which leads to some confusion

Thank you sir:) That was kinda my line of thinking when I did this although I might add a small altoids tin to the back as a small survival fishing kit or firstaid..? Thoughts...?
@SavageVoyageur3 жыл бұрын
Nice modification to your knife. You might want to add a Sail needle, just tape it to the back of the sheath. A sail needle does triple duty in field. It can be used as a medical device to remove splinters or stingers. It can be used as a compass if you magnetize the one end. It can be used with paracord threads to repair your gear to continue your mission. Cheers mate.

I had a couple of sharpies that had messed up tips. So I cut them and used the body to hold my rods. Taped them to the sheath empty. When you insert the rod there's enough tension to hold the tod in place

They look awesome brother great job It's funny how we visualize using these things like surviver man in an apocalyptic world hiding in the woods from packs of violent canabals ROFL.. You know like that movie The Road where the guy and his young boy had to travel in a dangerous new world;) they found a really cool bunker full of food that was awesome LOL..I'm sick I know im weird like that;)

Sweet mods Shawn! Just went to Amazon and there are 12 Bacho knives left in stock @ $12.00 apiece. Thinking about pulling the trigger…and right after I typed that I sprung for 2! I've seen a number of mods to fat wood this winter. The idea of drilling a hole and attaching a lanyard (for instance) or as you did, attaching it to a knife sheath is brilliant! Good job!****** FYI- something arrived in the mail 2-3 days ago! ****** I've been down with a virus all week, well, 2-3 days…and have not done any mod work or builds or tests. Not up to it... so since I work the next few days( Yes, that's right I'm going right back to the very place I caught the stuff in the first place! ), I will do that next week and looking forward to it…Thank you , Sir! Tim P.S…NICE PRODUCT!

Thanks a ton man!!! WOW $12 each really..? I ordered these not all that long ago at almost half that - maybe they were on sale then idk but still $12 is a good price for a stainless Mora:) I had made some fatwood lanyards like that and sent over to my buddy Tony in Ireland - they work good for different carry options... If I can find the others I made I will send you a couple - sound good:) I hope you get to feeling better man - being sick blows!!! My girl has been sick and normally I don't sick but when I do Im down for the count - It could be a long week ahead:( Cant wait to see what you come up with on your builds - its always nice to see how others do things & adapt to our own set ups... That's why I love youtube lol people sharing and giving what they know..:) Thanks again Tim..! - Shawn

The myth about needing carbon steel to scrape a ferro just won’t die. Many people would be shocked that you don’t need metal at all. You only need something relatively hard and sharp. You can use a rock, a piece of broken glass. Ferro rods are great for that reason alone.

Like the wrap and the way you connected the scrapper. Very well done. A Magic Marker tube would make it a little less bulky instead of pine or even fatwood. I like the fatwood addition. I use it on all of mine. I actually Make fatwood matches to go under ranger bands for mine.

Both of those mods are very cool, looks like i'll be busy today . Yes the myth about carbonsteel knives. The only way anyone would even think that you need carbon steel to get a spark from a fero rod if they didnt understand a video they seen. You need carbon steel to get a spark with a flint stone. Fero rod is totally different. Tho you know this. lol The only mod i can suggest further is the pine you used, replace it with fatwood. like this bro. Fero rod all in one fire starter kit that way you just have more fat wood if needed. I love this version you have, very nice kit.
@houseoffire7210 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kull..! Not sure if the camera picked it up or not but that is almost solid resin fatwood on there - I had two on there but thought it looked gaudy - one on each side... I might put it back on and dip the jute twine in wax as to water proof it just on one... I watched the vid you sent but did not see the ferro rod all in one fire starter kit in it...?
@kullcraven10 жыл бұрын
What i did is used fat wood for the ferro rod case. So with that set up, you only need a knife, to shave your fat wood, to catch that , as welkl as use the rubber tube to extend a fire. The duct tape has multi uses tho you can catch duct tape with a ferro rod as well. So you have alot of options with that kit, Attach it to your mora and your set. Tho you have the same thing anyhow i just wanted to show you how you can use the fatwood as a ferro holder to have extra fatwood. tho mine wasnt full of resin.
@kullcraven10 жыл бұрын
Hey man i just took the fero rod kit i made and attached it to my mora companion, now it is an all in one kit for sure, knife included. lol Thanks alot for the idea, i had some ranger bands on the mora with just a small fero, tho now i put the kit on it instead. Thanks again

Plumpy E If you have a mora or bacho find a piece of wood drill a hole to fit a.ferro rod and start wrapping. its not hard at all it took me about an hour to figure it out. start on the back of the sheath by use tape to hold it in place running it from top to bottom then start your wrap keeping it super tight as you go from bottom of sheath to the top. Hope I explained it correctly.

It's should not be called a myth that you need high carbon steel to strike a ferro rod. It is a misunderstanding, not a myth per se. It was confused with the fact that you need high carbon steel to strike sparks with a piece of flint or hard rock. That is totally true and not a myth, and the bases for the misunderstanding.

its high carbon u need to effect a spark off the spine of your knifw with flint chirt or hard rock like obsidian
@houseoffire728 жыл бұрын
+Ty Langford Thank for your insight but with a high carbon stainless it can be done just not consistently depends on how much carbon content there is - I used quartz & an agate on the back of one of my high end Jap kitchen knives just to see what happened... AND had sparks just a couple times but was not like that of a high carbon steel BUT... IT DID SPARK just not dependable:) In my vid I said its stainless then added high carbon directly after that... Now for a long time people had been pushing on yt that the only way to strike a ferro rod was with a HC Steel which is just plain wrong - any HARD edge will work as long as its harder than the rod itself... My personal favorite is a chunk of lake superior agate or quartz OR when I can find them a sharp piece of chirt since in my area its hard to find...

I never follow the masses. I blaze my own trail, and I wasn't speaking about your channel when I said that. I was referring to a hypothetical YT Chan that would have some uneducated hick Mo-Fo saying that quote and believing it to be the gospel or law of nature! LoL
