The social evil that exist in Christian and Muslim societies are because of their holy book, so people put alot of effort finding a source for social evil of hindu society. South was very much casteist throughout history, but that was not the case with North and central India. That's why you don't find stories of caste discrimination in North india but south has festivals dedicated to people who taught against caste or varna discrimination. Britishers came to india and documented thousands of castes, misinterpreted "varna" as "Jaati" and found the most book which could have lead to caste discrimination and BOOM they found manusmriti. Totally misunderstood it and believed that brahmins believe they are superior because manusmriti says so which it doesn't. And our respected most educated hindu BR ambedkar burnt manusmriti calling it the reason for caste discrimination, he spoke against Hinduism throughout his life, but if you read his books he was a misogynist person with no respect for women.

The brahmins by Hindu law were not allowed to amass wealth and were supposed to live in minimal subsistence. Many of the panchantra stories will have a "poor brahmin" character.there were a number of Shudra kings. The most famous was Mahapadma Nanda. The Nanda dynasty was conquered by Chandragupta Maurya who established his own Maurya dynasty which under his grandson Ashoka the great actually went on to become the greatest, largest and most powerful dynasty to have ever ruled the Indian subcontinent. One of the misconceptions of the caste system is that the hierarchy was based on economic power. It was not. The Brahmins in fact were an economically disadvantaged community because they could only live by teaching, performing rituals and by begging/charity. The Kshatriyas earned through wages and taxes, the Vaishyas through business and mercantile activities and the Shudras were land owners, farmers, skilled artisans and craftsmen and musicians who were highly respected and commanded very large incomes, as well as being the menial workers. The building of many temples and charitable foundations have been commissioned by the Chettiar and Velala castes in South India. In many districts the wealthy landowners are Shudras who actually employ Brahmins in their service. When India was in the golden age of the Guptas, and Sudras had expanded their roles to become the artisans, craftsmen, goldsmiths, silversmiths, stonemasons, potters, carpenters, builders, ship-builders, weavers, artists, dancers, musicians, traders etc. they were very well paid and many became extremely wealthy. Many Sudras became land and real estate holders and employers and then managed to activate caste mobility to become “high caste”. The idea that Sudras were always slaves and serfs is incorrect. In the Gupta period (300 to 600 CE), trade appears as one of the normal functions of the Sudras ………. And in this respect the brahminical lawgivers obliterated the distinctions not only between them and the Vaishyas, but in some cases between them and the first two varnas………. As artisans and traders the Sudras played an important part in promoting trade and industry which continue to be generally steady during this period. (Sudras in Ancient India R.S. Sharma pg 267 - 268. During this period (300 - 600 CE) we also hear of Sudra rulers such as those in Saurashtra, Avanti, Arbuda and Malwa. Along with them are mentioned the traditional Sudra, Abhira and Mleccha Kings, who all are described as reigning in the regions of the Sindu and Kashmir, and are assigned by Pargiter to the 4th Century CE. (F.E. Pargiter - Dynasties of the Kali Age p 55.) The first two Christian centuries were an age of crafts, commerce, gold and silver coins, trading ports and inland towns. In no other period of early history international trade thrived so much. Naturally the artisans (Sudras) came to the fore, as can be inferred from the epigraphical records of their guilds and donations. Free from state control the guilds could function effectively, and a large number of towns could provide alternative sources of livelihood to oppressed members of the lower orders from the countryside. (Sudras in ancient India p. 319

The surname based system is clearly a fusion of feudal systems prevalent in the Middle East and Europe. It doesn't require a rocket science degree to understand. Even today many Mughal and colonial period setups are being followed from the police station to courts to everyday life. So yes it's head scratching that oppressors would have allowed hierarchy to be followed that's native when nothing native was allowed to be followed. I have yet to see everyday sarkari work that can be traced back centuries to Dharma. However even simple sarkari forms have traceability to Mughals and colonials.

Gurudev , dont you think manu smriti and noah' ark (nuh) is same event? syria was a region where sanskrit was spoken and we find oldest sanskrit inscriptions in syria 3300bc. Mount ararat is near syrian and turkish border. They got only 1 book and we have libraries of books.

Yeah let's clearly discriminate with shudras ! After all everything ancient is complete and final truth ! Hell I will even blindly follow a book even if it was written by a serial killer if it was written in sanskrit! After all its "ancient " , how can it be wrong ?

But then if changing Varna is ok, then in Gita, Arjuna says that I don’t want to perform the duty of the Kshatriya and I want to beg like a Brahmin, but Krishna rebukes him for this! I understand one can say that the context is different but ultimately if we say that the choice of Varna is a function of the agency of the mind and it is not space and time specific, then Arjuna should’ve been allowed to Change his Varna and become a Brahmin

Bhagvat Gita 18.63 - "Thus, I have explained to you this knowledge that is more secret than all secrets. Ponder over it deeply, and then do as you wish." It is very clear (from BG 18.63), that Krishna gave a CHOICE to Arjuna.

@ReligioCritic Жыл бұрын
You can't change you varna 15 times, Arjuna trained his entire life to become a good Kshatriya, but he wanted to stop being a Kshatriya when he was on the battlefield just so that he could get away from the problem, it's not that he always wanted to become a Brahmana, later Krishna also explained what it means to be a Brahmana, the qualities of a Brahmana, which Arjuna obviously lacked.
