To truly get that classic tone, it has to be a ‘69 to ‘78 Montgomery Ward fan with the blue fan blade and CTS 400k capacitors. The ‘80’s era and after was just not the same when they moved production to East Borneo. If you’re lucky, you can find some Guitar Center limited reissues of the ‘70s Era fans on the Andy Sneap forum, complete with the translucent blue blades and ungrounded power cord. I agree. Trey is among those guitarists that have changed the rules of the game with his uniqueness. It's not only that he is good at playing scales or whatever, it's that he has experimented and created new things that nobody has been able to imitate, and the feelings he put into his playing is unique and recognisable. The same with Morbid Angel.
@mikeessАй бұрын
I recall doing this in my bedroom on accident back in the early 2000s after I noticed the unique sound as my box fan was a bit too close to my amp. About a year later I found out about Morbid Angel and Trey's technique. I'm so happy you've chose to focus in on this. I had so much fun with this as a teenager and it was one of MANY reasons I fell in love with Trey's playing all those years ago.

Holy shit, this is so cool! I had no idea that this kinda mic’ing technique even existed. Kinda sounds a little like a subtle ring modulation effect. It’s kinda reminiscent of a whammy flutter as well (but just always ‘on’ if that makes sense).
@patrikbnvn284718 күн бұрын
Yes Trey's idea to put a fan between the amp and the mic is so cool!! This is subtle and no pedal can do this effect. With the fan blades there's a lot of subtle frequencies added to the amp tone that I like, not just the vibrato effect. By the way, by just putting a fan in front of the amp, not even recording anything, it sounds very different and so interesting.

@AAAA-lt9hq18 күн бұрын
Fan hum is too loud. Sounds like a drone note from a keyboard or a grounding issue in the guitar. I would move the mic away from the fan to catch less of the blade and motor noise, and turn the amp up so it is still loud enough to be distorted through the fan without the motor being audible but is still captured by the mic on the other side.
@patrikbnvn284718 күн бұрын
For the purpose of this vid I've tried to keep the takes as natural as possible, but sure, then there's some adjustments to be done. First, in the context of a mix the fan noise can easily be cut. And I've experimented this technique in many ways, and moving the mic from the blades wouldn't work, the effect would be different. But definitely, having the amp louder helps 👍

@patrikbnvn2847Ай бұрын
Sure, I understand this point of view. I still find Trey’s ideas brilliant though. First because I personally have never heard anything that sounded exactly the same as this Wind Rift Technique, and I really like the fact that with the fan it sounds dirty. Then because I find interesting to try to create this kind of effects physically, and not just electronically, by tinkering with everyday objects. It’s like rotary effects, now they can be done with pedals or studio effects, but the idea of making a speaker rotate was interesting. But it’s just my opinion.
