From an LP by The U.S. Coast Guard Band called "Soloists and Chamber Players," this is Guilmant's Morceau Symphonique, played on euphonium with concert band accompaniment. The recording was made in 1979. The equipment I used was a Besson New Standard (satin silver finish) with a Bach 5G mouthpiece. Sheet music available for solo with piano here: www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/1...
A graduate of The University of Iowa, Mr. Werden was the euphonium soloist with The United States Coast Guard Band for more than 20 years. He has performed throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England, Japan, and the former Soviet Union. Through FM and TV broadcasts, his solos have been heard in dozens of countries around the world. He is a recitalist and clinician, and has performed at local, national, and international symposiums. He was a member of The USCG Band Euphonium/Tuba Quartet, the Atlantic Tuba Quartet, and the Classic Brass Band. He previously taught at the University of Connecticut and is listed in Marquis' Who's Who in American Education.
His efforts to expand the role and recognition of the euphonium led the British magazine Sounding Brass in conjunction with the American publication Euphonia to name him "Euphonium Player of the Year" in 1980. He is the first American awarded this honor. In 1981 he was elected to the post of Euphonium Coordinator for the International Tuba-Euphonium Association (formerly called Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association: T.U.B.A). In 1987 he was appointed to the Honory Board of Advisors of ITEA. His many solo performances and his efforts to expand the role of the euphonium in music earned him the prestigious Coast Guard Commendation Medal. He has also been awarded two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, the Coast Guard Special Operations ribbon, two Coast Guard Unit Commendations, and three Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendations. In 1993 he was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda honors society.
He has published articles in Euphonia magazine, The Instrumentalist magazine and the T.U.B.A. Journal. He is the author of The Blaikley Compensating System, Scoring for Euphonium, co-author with Denis Winter of the Euphonium Music Guide, and a co-author of the Brass Player's Cookbook. He compiled and edited a series of papers by Arthur Lehman into the book The Brass Musician. He has also published over four dozen arrangements for a variety of solo instruments and ensembles. His website, www.dwerden.com/, has become a favorite of euphonium players everywhere.
Since moving to Minnesota he has performed with Symphonia (America's Premier Large Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble), the Minnesota Orchestra, the Sheldon Theater Brass Band, was a special guest artist at the International Euphonium Institute, and has been heard on live national broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion.

A restrained and understated playing style that allows the Euphonium to "sing". Thank you for the performance. 👍

I took this solo to State this year and I took some criticism from Mr. Danny Vinson (The judge) and he told me to use you as reference for tone quality and just sound in general. Needless to say, I was not disappointed! 3 years of high school left to try and get to your sound. Your tone is absolutely gorgeous by the way.

This piece is awesome; I'm playing it this year for my District Pre-Audition. I love playing that ridiculously high note in the middle, in the slow section. It's fun!

My Very first Solo in 1984. I didn't know how to read Tenor Clef, so I memorized it. I actually made it to All State Honor Band that year, but embarrassed myself during the Scales inquiry. I was at least motivated to learn Theory, and such. I love this solo, it takes me back to my youth...

I've just been assigned this solo for my recital this semester. I'm so excited to play it - especially that C#!!!! ... If I can... I've just been listening to that tiny section repeatedly. It's my absolute favorite part and I'll be very sad if I have to take the optional E instead.

@SunshineGirl92594 If you mean the low B-flat (bass clef), that is often called a "Pedal B-flat" and it is played open. It is the same fingering as the B-flat on the 2nd line of the bass clef staff, and you can go down from pedal B-flat the same as from low B-flat (open, 2nd valve, 1st valve, 1&2, etc.). It's a good range to practice a little every day.

@dwerden Thank you for the advice, but that's not the one I meant... on my piece, there is a point when a the concert b flat (in bass clef, the tuning note) has two flats next to it. I was just wondering what that was. I haven't played something with that before.
@dwerden
@dwerden 13 жыл бұрын
@devonmoore1219 That's about the size of it. For example, a dominant 7th chord is made up of 3rds, as in C-E-G-Bb. So if you want a Cb 7th chord, then of course it would be Cb-Eb-Gb-Bbb. In the key of Cb, an A (equal in pitch to a Bbb) would not fit well.

@SunshineGirl92594 Ah, I get it. I was taking "double b-flat" as one would take "double high c". A double flat is kind-of like math, as is a double sharp (which looks like a funny X). A single flat lowers a pitch by one half step. A double flat does that twice, so it lowers the pitch by 2 half steps. In this case it changes it from b natural, to b-flat, finally to A. Does that make sense? By the same token, a G double sharp goes from G to G sharp to A.

Hey guys, I absolutely need help on one note on this piece. It's probably the hardest note for anyone who's playing it: High C-sharp. I can get high B-flat but the c-sharp, I can't. It's like the climax of this piece and I really want to play it instead of the optional e-flat. This is the only part that I can't play. Everything else, I can nail. ANY ADVICE?? BTW I am an 8th grader and this is for my solo contest.

Get a blank piece of sheet music and practice writing it by ear, then get the arrangement online and see how close you got. James Pankow of Chicago was a master at doing this. Mostly for his handmade Terry Kath who drove him crazy with compositions coming out of his head. There is an unauthorized biography about James Pankow. Read it and be inspired. Terry Katy documentary as well came out last year. Jimi Hendrix tried to get the rights to produce him.
