Portable video and photography lights are becoming much cheaper, lighter, brighter and easier to get. The traditional Aputure 120Dii costs $900 and is out of the price range of many people, but the ones covered in this video are just as bright and MUCH more affordable, like the GVM 80W which only costs $134 and even comes with a light stand and umbrella! Then there's the WellMaking HL-800 C which for $199 is really small and the battery attaches right to the light so no cables are needed. The Came-TV boltzen 55w series is also covered. They use NP batteries and V-mount and have a fresnel attached to the light. All the lights in this video can use Bowens-mount modifiers and they are all portable battery powered or AC powered. They are all REALLY QUIET, lightweight, small and don't cost much. This is video number three of my portable light series.

Another very practical and fun-to-watch video by Markus. This guy has become one of my favorite KZbinrs in the photography and video realm, because he's a guy who loves to experiment and find solutions to problems, even if they fall outside the so-called "professional" category of tools. (For instance, how many guys do you know who are willing to use actual flashlights to light their videos? Especially in the daytime?) But he cares far more about getting results, than he does about being The Cool Kid who can impress you with his budget for toys. Instead, (as he intimates in this video, when he says that "Amazon is like a giant toy store"), he'd rather tinker with solutions and push them to extremes, if necessary, just to see what happens. (Two of my favorite examples are the video slider that he controls with a string he pulls just off camera, and the video where he tries to see just how many "corncob"-style LED lights he can fit into one big softbox.) I love this guy, and I find him to be both entertaining and inspiring. The fact that he has little or no ego involved in what he does, just makes him even more endearing, because he really is a bit like watching a Mad Scientist, (with Boy Band hair), working in his laboratory, and concocting Rube Goldberg-type projects that nobody else thought of, because they were too worried about keeping their reputations intact, while the quirky guy who just loves having fun ends up creating wacky solutions that get the job done - and usually cheaper than just buying a name-brand product. But the one video I find myself always wishing he would make is the one where he explains WHAT HE USES ALL THIS EQUIPMENT FOR. Now, if you peek at one of his other channels, you see that he is an ardent Health enthusiast and Healthy Lifestyle guru, so maybe that's his main gig. But I'd still like to find out WHY he travels so much, and whether or not any of the projects that he works on these days are for actual clients, or if he uses them to build his own brand. (Either one is fine, but I'm just very curious to know.) Now, maybe he made his fortune years ago, and all of these equipment purchases and product comparisons are just because it's his own, personal passion. But if he's actually out there hitting the pavement, looking for customers, or working on videos for clients other than his own brand, i think his viewers would love to know. And if not, I'd also love to see some videos where he talks about how the Average Joe can use equipment like this to build their own brand, and be able to compete with The Big Boys of both KZbin, and the larger world, too. (If you see his video where he and Cara travel from city to city on a promotional tour, you get a feeling that he is probably a warehouse of knowledge about self-promotion.) So, it would be interesting to see this channel sometimes veer of into a video now and then about lessons he's learned about how to use technology to market yourself, and also what he's learned about working for others. Every time a Markus video pops up on my screen, I get excited, because this is a guy who knows how to present information with all the passion and wide-eyed wonder of someone who's just starting out, but with the seasoned experience of someone who's been around long enough to see through the marketing hype, and who knows how to separate the facts from the Spin. I hope this channel continues to grow, because Markus is a much-needed alternative to those channels that have become so polished that they feel more like watching celebrities review camera gear, than regular people. He's got the polish, but I think the kid inside of him would never let it go to his head. He's too busy just having fun with all those toys.

I was going to say that he and his wife go scouting for great photography sessions regularly, but I read your entire message and I understand that you know that. Then my response is that I don't know what he does for a living, but it must involve a FUCK-TON of cameras and lights. My guess would be model photography for fashion businesses, and pictures of him and Cara are useful to show clients from his resumé.

Thanks for another outstanding video, Markus! You're showing lights that no one else is talking about, and they all seem to be excellent options. I kinda like the GVM 80W and, even more so, the WellMaking 80W from this bunch. Most of the lights other KZbinrs show are much more expensive, like the Godox AD600 (which is still priced fairly-reasonably). This video has been very helpful. The only thing missing was... Cara!

A note about the CAME-TV Boltzens (I've reviewed both new and old version), the OG with a single battery slot cuts out past 50% when using the NP-F batteries because of insufficient amperage. It was a often discussed flaw. Works fine otherwise. The Q-55II version (daylight only) is at about 30% brighter, but you tested the bi-color, which is why you saw no noticeable difference. The additional slot for the NP-F battery allows you to run it at full power without any issues. I use it to this day on many events, and the built in fresnel is what separates it from all my other portable lights. I have a small case that holds 2 of these lights, all AC adapters, 2 v-mount batteries and extension cord...and its about the size of a standard briefcase.

Thanks for a great review in your entertaining style! I went to buy a GVM light as you stated in your chart that it had a battery option - but no! No battery, and no option. BUT, it takes 30V DC, so TWO V-mount batteries in series using a home-built rig COULD in theory power it for a couple of hours. Great! I thought, and proceeded to search for cheap V-Mount power and mounting plates. Whoops! That solution will cost me apps $400,- on top of the price of the light! Unless you happen to have a bunch lying around.. Just thought people should be aware of this.. Endnote: But being a tinkerer, I quickly looked at my power tools collection, and found that some tools have the same voltage as a V-mount, and their batteries can be had for a fraction of the cost! So with a bit of soldering.... :-)

I prefer that the battery is separate from the lamp. The lamp is therefore lighter when you hold it in your hand or monopod while carrying the heavy battery with a shoulder strap. It is also an advantage on a tripod because you hang the battery low on the tripod. In wind or gusts, this is much more stable than when the weight is attached to the lamp.

I own two F55s. Bought them as a two piece kit. Great overall. Like the spot/fllood feature. Watch out for cheap barn doors fall off and the battery contact pin sometimes will recede and you think light is broken or battery dead because its not making contact.. Use a small screwdriver or needle nose to pull it back into place. NPs will die very fast at 100% power but still puts out a lot of light at 30%. Also comes with a D Tap cable if you have Anton Bauer or other brands with DTap feature. The newer model with double batt slots is a good idea.

Wow! What a great video, Markus! Lights have come such a long way in the past 25 years, from being hot, heavy, delicate and difficult to assemble, to these. The GVM appears to be an incredible deal. The only thing that would make me hesitate to buy it is the lack of barn doors, which I frequently use for mounting color gels or diffusion (it always looks better when I place diffusion far away from the light source, sometimes using a separate C-stand with diffusion hung from a gobo arm). I have two different sets of LED panel lights that use a power brick. We learned the hard way to never hang the brick from a stand knob by using the built-in power cord that runs from the brick to the light (the weight of the brick shorts the connection, necessitating a new $80 brick).

Wellmaking HL-800C advertised as having a "Noiseless fan", but in reality the fan is quite noisy. Not very noisy, but quite audible especially if you record in a silent environment. I think the noise can be removed in post though. Otherwise it is a great, super-strong, super-compact light, highly recommended. @MarkusPix, how come you didn't mention a very noticeable noise of HL-800C?
@MarkusPix
@MarkusPix 4 жыл бұрын
The Wellmaking noise is still quieter compared to the noise from the Godox. Luckily quiet fan noise can easily be removed in post because it's a steady sound in a narrow frequency range. Sony cameras remove it automatically while recording. For super quiet- the GVM fan noise is almost nonexistent.

@@MarkusPix Thanks for this reply! Super helpful!! I am actually leaning towards getting the GVM, for the quiet fan and because of the amazing price. But since I was hung up on the no battery situation with the GVM, I am going to get something like this external portable battery (low enough watts to fly on a plane, and no fan): www.amazon.com/65Watts-Portable-Charger-Battery-Notebooks/dp/B07P87JTVT/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 I realize this battery wont work with the light at full blast, which is totally fine with me. D-tap battery. Yes the HL800C can handle 90cm soft boxes, but Aputure soft boxes are kind of heavy, Godox is much lighter. Remember it has a built in adjustable fresnel so adding another fresnel won't make much difference. Also, because of the fresnel, it will create a hotspot in soft boxes unless you use the inner diffuser also.

Even with my budget, I can get a number of them. That number is zero. Good thing I don't make videos then. So why the hell am I watching this video? Love your stuff, Marcus!
