Talk about fun digging! We brought back almost 300 pounds of ammonites from the lake. You’re so right about the hike. 2.3 miles along the shore. Canoeing is our next trip.

I live on this lake, i could tell you were you will find Ammonites so big it takes two people to lift them. They come out of a very very dense limestone cliff and weirdly if you hit them with your hammer they “ring”. Also generally be careful of the Corps, they will fine you if they catch you breaking them out of the rock. Surface collecting they seem to turn a blind eye to.

It would be cool to see and film some ammonites that big, but I wouldnt even try to recover one! No use for something so massive that I need a crane to move it around, lol. Thanks and props for the heads up!

@@TheFossilFiend Hey Friends I'm trying to locate a few good spots to look for ammonites with my 11 year old son for his birthday. Any ideas that could help us out?

@@dallasdoobman Assuming your name means you are from the Dallas area, you are mostly surrounded by them! Look up the Dallas Paleontology Society (webpage and facebook) Tons of info there and lots of people much closer to help you out.

@@TheFossilFiend most of the area I live in is primarily all lime stone. In fact the Washington monument was made from lime stone quarried from my area. You can find little small seashells here and there but that’s about it

Hi there! I was at the lake yesterday hunting for ammonites and didn't have any luck at all, are you on the Oklahoma side or Texas? I was hunting around lighthouse area and found lots of petrified wood but no luck on fossils. Thanks in advance
@TheFossilFiend
@TheFossilFiend 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The entire area is filled with fossils. Make sure the spot is rocky. If its all sand, then the fossil layer is buried. It can take a while to get your mind to recognize the shapes, so be persistent. Look at everything shiny, everything that seems "too round" or that may have ridges. Once you start finding them, it will click and you'll start seeing them everywhere.

@@TheFossilFiend okay thank you so much for your time and response! I used to be with the Shawnee Gem and mineral club and we went on a over night field trip there a few years back. Found lots of devil's toe nails and petrified wood. It's such a neat place and you always come away with something awesome no matter what! Thanks again for your response! I can't wait to go back!!!

No, it is not legal. The Army Corp owns this land, if not on private land and can fine you heavily or incarcerate in the worst cases.
