That buckle that was attached to the hame leveler is called a "trace buckle". There is a picture of one in my 1894 Sears catalog reprint. (and, since you decided to leave those iron items there, I guess I can confess that it was I that hooked those two things together and left them when we were there last time. )

Well, no wonder it didn't make sense to me when I looked at it. I didn't think you'd run traces under the doubletree, but what do I know? :D
