As I am anticipating the birth of our eighth child any day now, I sat down to answer some of your questions about how my pregnancy has been going, my plans for birth, and how we are preparing for baby number eight!
In this episode, I’m answering:
- Will we have more kids after this?
- What were my previous births like?
- How am I planning for this home birth?
- Did we find out the gender this time?
- Has this pregnancy been different from the rest?
- Am I taking iron?
- How do I handle afterbirth pains?
- Were my girl and boy pregnancies different?
- Do I nurse on demand or on a schedule?
- Where will my older kids be when the baby is born?
- What would I tell my first-time pregnant self?
- What kinds of tests do I have while pregnant?
- Do we have a list of names for this baby?
- How long do I nurse my babies and how do I wean?
- What do I love so much about the Bradley method?
- How do I survive the first trimester with so much on my plate?
- What do I do with my placenta after birth?
- Do I drink raw milk while pregnant?
- Have I ever been close to having a C-section?
- How do I space my babies?
- What do I eat when experiencing food aversions?
- Do I still use cloth diapers?
- Do I get stretch marks?
- Why do I choose home birth over hospital birth?

40 years ago, fully insured, working for a major university, there was zero support for home birth and yet hospital birth made no sense to me. I hit the library and bookstores and discovered what I needed: Rahima Baldwin’s book and Mothering Magazine. I didn’t care what it cost me (insurance wouldn’t pay), homebirth was the safest option. That first homebirth changed my life as it caused me to ask myself “I wonder what else they were wrong about?” All my babies were born at home and with minimal midwife involvement during the pregnancies. So happy.

I found the book Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin when I first started college. I was 14 years from my first pregnancy but her whole attitude resonated with me. I did not give birth at home but I did have midwives for both of my babies. No drugs. Best choice ever.

Wow! You are so fortunate. When I was 37 I had a placenta abruption at 40 weeks + 1 day. She died. The following year I lost our son at 28 weeks 5 days also to placenta abruption, then 2 second trimester miscarriages the following year , then another placenta abruption at 36 weeks at age 40.

I recently had my sixth baby just a month before my 48th birthday. I'm also a grandmother of two with two married daughters and there are thirteen years between my last two kids. Granted she was a huge surprise and I assumed I was entering menopause and took a pregnancy test only to "confirm" my suspicions, lol. I'm having so much fun with this baby however, that I want another one.😂Praise God my pregnancy was completely normal and I was able to have a midwife/homebirth and my baby is also completely healthy. So, you never know, you just might have ten more.😂

What matters is how we bring up our children and not the quantity. I think if a mother is an organized person who is ready to devote her time and love her kids, she can have any amount she wants. But if she gives birth every year as a habit or she just loves being pregnant, I think she should over think her life.

I hope you can answer me Brittany- how was having a third baby? 0 to 1 I struggled a lot, 1 to 2 was a breeze, but my second is such an easy baby, this definitely helped with the transition. People often say 2 to 3 hard so I am kinda afraid of it hahahahaha right now we have a routine, everything on the day just flows, I really want a third but when I think of the transition I get kinda scared

I have to pause to comment about how beautifully and gracefully answered the first question. When do you ever hear such an optimistic answer to that question and an openness to the will of God? Not often, in my experience. Even though it is a super personal question, you didn't overshare too. Classy is the word that comes to mind. Thanks so much for your positivity and I feel really encouraged! I will pray for a smooth delivery for you.

What does having babies have to do with the will of gods? If you and your partner are fertile and have unprotected sex, you are likely going to get pregnant. People of all religions and none have babies, and it does not require any input from your particular imaginary friend.

With my 3rd... Getting in the car really slowed it down... I waited as long as I was comfortable with, but in the car it really kinda stopped. We lived very close... By the time we got into labor and delivery and they hooked me up they were barely picking up contractions... About 25 min of lying there I got a super strong one and it was off to the races from there... I was 6 cm when I arrived at the hospital... The hospital was a lot different. I had my first 2 babies 15 and 10 years before my 3rd, all in the hospital but the 3rd was a night and day difference.

I'm so glad you're speaking on wanting privacy during birth. People act like that's so strange, but personally, I think it's bizarre to have your entire extended family in the birthing room. I'm early in my 2nd pregnancy (~5-6wks) & honestly, nothing sounds more amazing than giving birth on my own (but with reliable assistance, standing by). When I'm uncomfortable I have no desire to be touched or have a conversation, no matter how much I might love that person.

Yes! That also amazes me when I see that on tv, like its normal to have family come in and out of the birthing room. I couldnt imagine... im from the Netherlands, home birthing is a normal option here though quite a few choose a hospital (though that still can be private with just your midwife). Midwives here are quite highly educated and they can perform several medical actions. I had all 3 of my children at home, the 2nd even with just my husband as she was so fast the midwife was too late ;). You can have as much or little medical intervention as you want, its really up to you when you don't have complications.

Wow, Lisa, this is so, so true! I am 71. My first child was born when I was 22. It was still a very much “don’t ask, just let the dr and hospital take care of it” society. That was 1974. Two things I was sure of - I wanted an epidural (I thought) and I wanted to breast feed. I paid extra money to go to the only dr who did epidurals, only to find out when I got to the hospital that my dr was “out of town” and I had to have the dr on call. Saddle block - a shot on each side of the vagina. I went out cold about 15 mins later. I didn’t wake up until my daughter was already 6 hours old and had been given a bottle in the nursery. It was a nightmare. With my second, in 1977, at least I was able to have her Lamaze. No meds. But still not as much control as I wanted. Women and babies were abused in those days by both drs and hospitals. Very black period of time in the medical community in my opinion.

So sorry for your experience! When I was in nursing school I remember looking at my ob nursing textbook and thinking that the pudendal or saddle blocks would be the best option, mistakenly thinking that the emergence was the most painful thing. Then I had my first baby two years later and realized that whoever came up with those must not have had children. Uterine contractions would not be affected at all, and that's the real pain. I'm so grateful I learned to relax and ride the waves. Now I look forward to labor, every time!

You know what, my grandma had 8 babies and varicose veins. She had Thema removed when she was already over 80 years old. They were so bad that she was asked to present her case at the med school. So, one of the med school students asked her: "why didnt you get them removed years ago"? And she was like: "Young man, my husband lost his leg in WW2 (he was a German soldier), I had to take care of 8 babies and then I had 14 grandchildren. I just did not have time!" And then she got standing ovations from all the med students. You remind me of her, Lisa.

My first birth I did no research and ended up with lots of pain and complications with my 2nd I took your advice about research and relaxing through the contractions and had a wonderful birth experience! Labored at home for 6 hours and 3 at the hospital no epidural and pushed for less than 5mins no tearing or complications whatsoever and was able to go home the next day!

My girls are 36 & 33. Thankfully both were born while my husband was in the military. Because I’m not a fan of needles, I did not have pain meds with either one. Only went through birthing class with the first and learned to control my breathing. My girls think I was nuts for doing that. Praying that you have a wonderful and easy home birth Lisa. Can’t wait to see the newest member of the Bass family! God bless y’all! 😀❤️

Love this. I have a unique perspective having had 3 natural births in 3 different settings. The 1st at a birthing inn, 2nd at the hospital, 3rd at home. Home was by FAR the most positive experience. There was literally no down side to it. You said it- not having to get in the car and get somewhere while in labor makes such a difference. Getting to settle back into your own bed after delivery is so great. Total advocate of it if a person’s circumstances allow for it. Was wonderful. ❤

TOTALLY agree Lisa! Thank you so much for sharing! I did NO prep at all. Only neonatal class said contractions would be like period pains. I had a serious medical issue I knew nothing about and ended up after 16 hours of Labour (and 2 epidurals) having a CS and emergency other surgery. If I had actually known what to expect I could have avoided all of that and had a totally different wonderful experience. I think it’s amazing that you girls share your stories so that mums now will know what options are available, what to expect etc. thank you!

Thank you for speaking about your experience. I feel like we are twins! I’m 37 this year and have 7 kids. My husband and I started having kids at 21 and have had an open hand, as you say, with children from the Lord. I’m very relaxed when raising my kids and love to feed them the best foods. I had 2 hospital births, 2 birth centers, and now 3 home. My labors are usually “easy”. Anyway, I love seeing what you are up to and your talks are very encouraging. I’m at a point where I don’t want to be pregnant again, but I also don’t want to miss out on any blessings. It’s so hard to give up your body and time again and again. But you are helping change my heart about it(again!). Thanks! Love your channel.

Wow... I loved this episode! I wish I had had more information available to me when my 3 boys were born in 1989/91/94. Things would've been SO different! I was 17 (and married) when I was pregnant with my first, so I was naive about birth plans, etc. I had nearly every intervention possible. Including a C-section. Under duress, I agreed to the C-section bc my mom "couldn't handle" MY pain and SHE told the doctor "I don't care HOW you get this baby outta her, just get him out!" At that exact moment, the Doc asked me if it was okay to do the C- section, to which I said,"I don't care, " so he took me in for emergency surgery. My hubby told me years later that my mom wouldn't hardly let HIM in the room while I was in labor. (I had no clue at the time!) I know! I'm just as dumbfounded as you! Smh at my mom... Anyways............... I'm sure I've been the one to ask mothers of multiple children, "Is this your last one?" "Are you having any more?" BUT, after following your channel and listening to moms who have had multiple children and realizing that God is the One to decide how many children we have.... I just wish I had realized that WAY back when I had my last child. I felt back then that many people kept asking me if I was gonna get my tubes tied. If this was my last one, etc etc etc. (To which I must admit....I let THEM convince me that I didn't need any more children and I got my tubes tied at the very young age of 23. 😢) It grieves me to no end that I made that decision and didn't let God be the One to decide that. And now I find it incredibly insensitive to ask that question to moms. It's almost like saying, "You should quit having kids!" Well, It's really no ones business, but you and your spouse's! For real. Just be happy for them!! Babies are such a sweet blessing from The Lord, and I couldn't imagine life without my 3 boys! I only wish I'd not taken the option away. It still grieves me to this day, at 52 years old...😢 So, please, ladies, don't let others pressure you into making a decision that you just may forever regret.

I had my tunes tied at 23 after my 4th premature baby. My oldest was 3. I got a reversal with Dr Richard Levin out of Louisville KY at 30, I had my 5th at 31 and 2 more. He was only able to fix one tube as the other was burned to far into my uterus. I had #8 a year after my 7th but MC very early.

MoonFlower I also regretted my decision to have my tubes tied. They ask me when I was 8 months pregnant and I had a 13 month old baby and a 4 year old. It is not the time to make that decision. I even went to a specialist to see if I could have it reversed. Only to find out I needed a hysterectomy . I mourned my womanhood for months. We have a 16 , 10 year old grandsons. Expecting another grandson in January. This is a miracle baby my son is 40 and this is their first baby. His wife is 30. After two failed IVF this baby is a blessing.

Even since my first, 7 years ago, the "system" has gotten quite a bit more natural and letting the mothers choose things. I showed up for my 38 week check up last week and the OB asked me if I wanted my cervix checked, which surprised me, because with my other 2 (age 5 & 7) it was just standard procedure to get checked weekly at 37 weeks. And I have heard that the hospital now is really accommodating of different birthing positions, etc. Although I live in Canada, I feel like interventions were never pushed on me the same as some other stories I've heard. However, I opted out of the Gestational Diabetes test and TDAP, and there was some minor push back from that early on.

Wonderful video, Lisa! I am so happy for you and your family. I work for a medical doctor who specializes in nutrition science. A rare find, I know! Heme iron from liver etc. can actually pass right through us. This is not medical advice, but info for maybe next time or something you can look into: consuming iron from foods like pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, and lentils, and pairing them with vitamin-c rich foods in the same meal can help boost absorption. Also do not consume coffee or tea with those meals, as they prevent the iron absorption. God bless.

I'm 37 as well, expecting #7 in October! Our 6th boy as well. Our teen daughter was a little disappointed. My last birth was intervention free home birth, not a single cervical check, it was great! First time no Pitocin or epidural. This baby is a planned hospital birth due to finances, insurance will cover most but I'm praying about whether or not I should go ahead and switch to home birth again despite the cost. I really would prefer not to deliver in the hospital even though I'm with a great group of midwives who promote natural birth, offer water birth, etc. The first midwife I saw in the practice said she had 2 home births herself and wanted to know why I wasn't going that route again! I just might, how much more relaxing it was to not have to go to the hospital!! How exciting it is for baby 8 joining you soon!! I pray you have a smooth birth!

I wish I could have had a home birth however the only midwife is 100 miles away, one way. All of mine they induced me with. They told me I was high risk because of my “age”. I have had 4 natural births. Three of those in a hospital setting, and my last at a birth center. I'm not sure if we are done or not, but if we have another, I definitely need to look further into the Bradley method. I 100% believe in the mental preparedness. Unfortunately, I think my last birth was my hardest, but I think it was all mental! Baby #1 and #2 were hard...baby #3 was breeze to bring into the world, and I think I had inadvertently tricked my mind into thinking all my hard labors were behind me! #4 was 12ish hours, start to finish, and I only pushed 15-20 min, but MAN!! My head was not in the right place and I 100% believe that's why I had such a hard time!

My first was in Australia in a hospital but they discouraged intervention as much as possible. Our home was six hours from the nearest hospital equipped for emergencies so I never considered a home birth and I spent the last month of my pregnancy in the city where the hospital was located. The second in a military hospital where I was given pitosen (sp?) and then something intravenous for pain where I had a reaction (mouth dry like it was full of cotton and I couldn’t focus my eyes). Seven years later I had my first home birth and another seven years later a second home birth when I was 41. My home births were amazing with a wonderful midwife ❤
