Owners are now reporting dealers are turning them down on Toyota Tundra trade-ins as they try to find a way out of the engine recall mess. Things just went from bad to worse.

I'm surprised how well their resale has held up, despite the drama. I figured the 22+ tundras would be crashing in price by now. If you have one, you might want to consider selling/trading sooner rather than later. I'm glad I didn't trade my '19 3.5 ecoboost f150 in for a new '23 tundra.

You got that right. And correct. Turbos on freighters ARE NOT THE SAME as a passenger/pickup vehicles. As post said high vs low rpms under load. But also size mass in metals vs those in regular vehicles. Those small engines pulling that weight if used in towing or "truck" use will not pass 100,000 miles+ before a whole turbo overhaul. And any turbo is not cheap! Complete junk. Bring back simple iron block pushrod engines. Not that difficult to keep something realiable going.

If it really isn't debris (I have serious doubts it is debris), then at some point they will have no choice but to either make mechanical changes to the engine design or simply put out a new ECU tune that reduces torque output at low RPM.

A lot of Tundra owners in the comments are saying everything is just fine to try to keep from going further upside down on their trucks. If you want to take the risk of spinning/seizing a main bearing while towing a heavy load, just be honest with yourself and family.

I'm sure some that have had zero trouble feel there is no reason to panic. They (we) are used to Toyotas that run forever and they are not all thinking about resale. The ones flipping out to get rid of them, they want the resale. We all deserve a reliable truck for the money they want us forking over. I would buy a 2500 before a 55-60k sr5 tundra. I don't have to worry about all the nonsense with the new tundra thankfully. I'm still rocking the 5.7 in my 17 TRD Pro.

Between the dishonesty from Toyota and their price gouging on the new Tacoma I would take my business elsewhere. I was dead set on a new 2024 Tacoma but not any more. Some of the stuff that these auto manufacturers think they can get away with is wild.

Folks, this recall is having an immediate and lasting effect on the value of these trucks. If you were a dealer and knew about these growing problems would you want to take it in on trade? Probably not. A used Tundra simply won’t sell (for obvious reasons). This is on Toyota to fix.

Even before the recall, word was out and it was damaging resale. On top of that, I've seen many dealers offering incentives on new Tundras, only doing more damage to those that paid above MSRP for one just a couple years ago.

I don't believe for one second that Toyota is being honest about the engine issue. If it is left over machine debris floating around the engine, it would damage more then just the main bearings. The oil flow would carry the ( debris) all throughout the engine. The rod beaings and the camshaft bores would also be damaged. The engineers screwed up here and in typical Toyota corporate BS they try to downplay the issue. Bad clearance that is tight, crankshaft or block twisting, light throttle detonation???? It could be anyone. For sure it is NOT debris only causing the problem. After millions of engines TOYOTA has built? All of a sudden two engine plants forgot to do a final cleaning before assembling? It is a engine design flaw, plane and simple.

The Hyundai Theta ii motors had this. The oil wasn't circulating well enough on certain cylinders and the bearing eventually seized. Also there was terrible blowby and oil burning, probably from poor piston ring tolerance. Billions spent on dead engines and lawsuits.

@@MattPSU02 I believe they had phenolic pistons that would fail by shedding chunks that clogged oil ports. In other words the engine wear produced the debris. I wouldn't doubt this is a similar problem. Some of these are 3 yrs old and had several oil changes. Manufacturing debris, my ass.

@@MattPSU02 The oil rings would nearly close with carbon build up. This would caused blow by, oil consumption and detonation. 7,500 mile oil change recommendation with a blend oil. After a replacement warranty engine was installed, 3,750 oil change recommendation. Do we need to be engineers here? You are telling me that if you change your oil more often, that engine will last longer? Who would have ever guessed?🙄

Why is the concept of a "SAFETY Recall" difficult to understand? If the truck stops in the middle of a freeway, that would be unsafe.

That is why the hybrid truck isn't recalled , because you can limp it to the side of the road on electric power . The engines are still contaminated with metal.

@@toddw.9845 Correct. Although I still have a lot of doubt about their explanation for all the engine failures. Blaming it on debris is a strategy used by some auto manufacturers so they don't have to specify an engineering flaw in an engine. That way they can't be sued year later for tens of thousands of engine failures that were excluded from the "recall". If they identify a design issue in a recall, they basically put a target on their back if disgruntled owners form a class action lawsuit.

I think everyone is not understanding what can happen here. Most likely, when the "loss of power" happens, the truck will not simply roll to a stop. The engine can lock up, while the transmissions torque converter is in lock up mode. The drive tires can also lock up skidding the truck down the road. I think the hybrid version, can disconnect the engine with the synergy system and keep the truck moving.

@@Captndarty Yes, there is a clutch between the engine and the electric motor in the hybrid Tundra and the truck will run in electric only mode for short distances with the engine not running. Mine does this in normal driving in city traffic between stop lights.

Yes but as you mention Lemon Laws only come into effect if YOU experience the defect within a set timeframe. Loss of resale value because of other peoples' problems would not be covered, and your chances of this happening to you within the statute of limitations is slim.

High torque output at low RPM can be very stressful on main bearings.The EcoDiesel in the Ram 1500 often had main bearing failures due to insufficient oiling due to the 8-speed keeping engine RPM very low -- so low that the oil pump couldn't supply enough oil to prevent wear and tear. Other yt channels already highlighted the SAE paper Toyota engineers put out on designing this engine and the obvious concerns they held about the ability of the main bearings to handle the load. They made changes during the development process but it seems that it wasn't enough and that even tiny variations inherent in the manufacturing process is enough to result in eventual failure. The engine makes a ton of torque at low RPM and the oiling system may not be adequate in all scenarios.

Toyota lost me as a customer. As a decades long Toyota loyalist, I traded my Tundra in on a new Nissan frontier for its NA V6, mechanical simplicity, and long track record of reliability. I left Toyota bc of their crappy turbo truck engines, insane pricing, insane dealer markups, hollow build quality and reliability issues on newer models, and lastly - the cartoonish bro-dozer styling of the new Toyota trucks.

Trouble is Toyota hasn't been willing to say if the replacement engines will have durable main bearings. "Durable" means almost no detectable wear after 500,000 miles of being well maintained and not street raced or abusively driven.

The debris in the engine is gaslighting bullcrap. They say that because all the engine failures have chunks of bearing in the oil pan, and debris in the engine sounds better than the main bearings are too weak and the engine can’t handle the work load demanded of it.

I don’t believe this is machining debris, because debris would only be in a few engines if at all. This is a faulty block of some sort. The engine is being starved of oil or faulty manufacturing of bearings or assembly materials.

Also, it seems odd that 24’s are failing as well, which makes little sense if they truly understand the issue. Only time will tell for sure, but I certainly feel for Toyota owners.

I would be ok with the truck being used as a static display in my front yard but I’m not going to attempt to use it to get my boat to the county launch ramp 11 miles from my house and back. I really feel sorry for the Toyota Truck owners as well as Toyota, a company that built its reputation on reliability. The owners mostly are making payments on trucks they are scared to leave the subdivision in. An unreliable truck has little value and they on average have “invested” $65,000 in its purchase. Toyota is scared of the repair cost and how to fix it. What a quandary. As for resale the Car dealers don’t want 2022, 23 or 24 Tundras in trad or on their lot at all. All this bad press has overshadowed the engine and quality issues of the Tacoma which is almost as bad. This kind of reminds me of the 1970’s GM Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs with the diesel engines. Are you old enough to remember that fiasco? Is Toyota the new General Motors?

Best truck I've ever owned, time will tell of course. Already more reliable than my 2019 F-150 when the cam phasers went out at 4,500 miles....

Awesome V8, great 9 speed transmission, quiet, good ride, extremely comfortable seats, great stereo, good back seat room. If I could complain about two things it would be the gas tank is too small (26 gal) and the backup camera resolution isn't great. Otherwise I love it. Hell even wireless apple carplay has worked perfectly.

@@plmn93 Interesting point you raise. I'm sincerely curious, what was outdated about it? I have a Pro-4X model and I've been very happy with the tech. It has crawl control, rear locker, brake torque traction control, an amazing transmission used in many Mercedes models that's shifts fantastically, a large infotainment screen, an engine with variable timing and overhead cams along with GDI, a power inverter, and on and on. What was outdated about it? Especially since it ran $5-$8k less than similar Fords/Chevys/Rams and obviously is being proven to be way more reliable than all 3 "American" brands. Ford leads with the most recalls in the industry, the Hemi has the notorious tick and lifter issue with the cams wearing down if you idle too much (both my dad and brother have this issue), and GM (being the best of the 3) is just GM. Known for their electrical problems and issues with the cylinder deactivation and burning oil on the 5.3. The Nissan 5.6 Endurance V8 and the Toyota V8's for the past 20 years are the best V8's ever made, hands down for reliability.

Good video. One of my employees tried to trade in his 2022 Tundra for an F-150 and unfortunately the same thing happened to him they declined to make him an offer. So now he is stuck with a vehicle where the engine that could/will blow up and it's his only mode of transportation.

@@imzjustplayinI granted have a small sample size still I have not yet seen a tundra hybrid yield 23 mpg. In one instance I spoke with an owner I trust who was not beating my 5.7 by more than 1-2 mpg. He is disappointed of course and was told a software update may fix it??? The other issue that hurts the hybrid is weight batteries are heavy at minimum your lugging 400 pounds more weight. This is all about pollution mandates not cost or mileage. Now the merits of that are up to the individual. But huge mileage improvements have not thus far shown themselves in any copies I have seen. Certainly not measurably enough to warrant the fufu. I want the truck and Toyota to succeed, I will need a new truck soon but I have kept what I have longer than normal as this stuff just isn’t working.

They are all data driven. This going to fall on the engineering team that made the issue. That might be manufacturing or might be design. Toyota wants their suppliers to be open, upfront, and honest with any problems. do not cover them up. Would be nice if they extended that same practice to how they treat customers

After 3 years the Toyota engineers must know precisely what is causing the main bearing stress/overheating/failure issue and must be aware of a fix. If they truly aren't aware of a fix, then they should inform Toyota senior management and then senior management would have a moral obligation to inform current owners, future prospective owners and the public.

This is a Lexus engine, so it’s almost certainly a Japanese design. We do know the engines coming out of the factory over there are having the same problem. And speaking of EVs: Toyota’s first EV was pulled from the market for months because the wheels were literally falling off. At least that’s what Toyota claims, but I’d bet there were massive problems with the powertrain or battery and Toyota didn’t want to admit it.

As an Engineer, oil changes at 5000 miles, use 5W-20 oil, oil analysis - samples to the lab. If your oil analysis shows no wear metal contamination - don't worry about it. Without data, you are flying blind and you should be worried.

They'll send you a little bottle for sample collection and you send it back with some general information on your vehicle and oil. Couple of weeks later you'll get a printout of results with all pertinent levels/concentrations along with a small narrative of what some of it means.

I'm soo mad at Toyota!! I called them 2x about giving me a rental, I don't want to drive my truck and get into a accident, they keep telling me to call the dealership to see if they can give me a loaner, I call the dealership and the service manager is never available. And to top it off I have a roadtrip coming up and have defective truck and have to pay for a rental out of my own pocket!! A service advisor told me that Toyota hasn't announced a" don't drive your truck" so I'm effing screwed!! Do something Toyota for customers!!

Funny thing is back in 2011+ when Jeep was producing the Pentastar they had a similar issue where the engines had sand left in them from the manufacturing process causing heater core and engine failures. Now recently they were hit with a class action lawsuit for the Pentastar tick. There's not a good engine out there anymore. When I went to test drive a 2024 GMC Sierra, they couldn't get it to start and it had an engine malfunction warning with 7 miles on the ODO. Turns out the engine was bad right from the factory. Can't make this crap up anymore.

I've been trying to tell people for decades that Toyota superiority is a myth. For every Toyota with 500k on the clock there are ten Fords with 500k on the clock. There is nothing special about a Japanese truck. We went from bodies that were rusted by 25k miles in the 1980s to frames that folded like a lawn chair in the 1990s to engines that lost crank shafts and head gaskets in the 2000s to the modern era with plastic beds that crack under load, engines that fail, turbos that blow, and electrical nightmares galore. How in the world did Toyota ever get the reputation they have? The PR team must have been brilliant.

Not to knock people’s taste in vehicles….but even without these major failures, the new Tundra/Sequoia are still huge disappointments when it comes to design and assembly quality. It’s cheap and features disappointing build quality in ways that are very apparent in a very short test drive if not a quick walk around. It’s clear that many elements of design, final testing, and production planning were disrupted by Covid lockdowns. Despite all of these obvious flaws, the Toyota faithful still bought it. They had to have thought it would at least be reliable and offer decent resale value to overcome its glaringly obvious design and quality issues. Without the traditional Toyota reliability, the new Tundra and Sequoia are complete dogs. The Tundra is worst in class now that the Titan is gone. The Sequoia was 4th best the day it came out.
