Rendezvous with Rama is a great rec I think for more classic hard sci-fi! I gotta try all these others for sure!

Nice list! Only one I haven't read is The Last Children of Tokyo, and they're all great stuff.

I really loved Jeff Vandermeer’s Borne. I’ve yet to try out Annihilation tho. Never heard of China Mountain Zhang. Have both of them on my list!

Great list. I enjoyed The Vanished Birds and China Mountain Zhang. I hope Denis adapts Rendezvous with Rama soon! I never read Neuromancer, might read it soon.

Oh, I so need to read Anihilation! I watched the movie, never got to the book, and people I respect are recommending so I must cave it! CMZ you already convinced me in another video, so I'll eventually get to it as I'm making my way through the SF Masterworks. I had not heard of Tawada's book, tbh, and it sounds quite interesting; reminded me of The Dispossessed? Is it similar or just an impression? Redezvous is such a good book! I read it soooo long ago (like... 15 years ago?) and I definitely need to re-read. Those are all great recommendations Zara! Definitely worth reading to start with sci-fi!

Thanks Livia! Re Annihiliation, I know you're going to like it! The movie is great, and I think reading the book added to the overall experience. I've not read The Dispossed! Hoping to this year though.

Funny enough, I picked up Neuromancer from a thrift store just a couple of days ago. I've always had a hard time finding sci-fi that really clicks with me. Currently I'm reading book 2 of Lois McMaster Bujold's "Vorkosigan Saga". Considering that her "The Curse of Chalion" (published 2001) is the best fantasy ever written in my opinion, I'm shocked by how poorly written book 1 of Vorkosigan - "Shards of Honour" (published 1986) - was. She definitely progressed a lot as an author in 15 years! But fans have assured me that the series really starts to pick up by book 3, and based on my other experiences with the author I trust this to be true, so I'm sticking with it even though I normally would have dropped the series after the first book.

I’ve had a similar experience to you with sci fi. I barely used to read it because I found a lot of it to be unnecessarily convoluted. I’m fortunate enough to have found sci fi that works for me now though. I’ve heard amazing things about the Varkosigan Saga (have owned the ebooks for a few years now) but I have heard the early books are rough! I’ve heard the pay off is definitely worth it though. You’ll have to keep me posted as you progress!

Generally, I don't read scifi very much as I tend to gravitate towards historical fiction and epic fantasy. You have given me some books to consider, however, and Simon Jimenez seems to be everywhere. Perhaps it's worth a try. Thanks.

Definitely worth a try! What’s your favourite historical fiction book/series? I want to read more in the genre.

@@bookswithzara It has to be Patrick O'Brian and The Master and Commander series followed closely by Bernard Cornwell and the Sharpe series.
