@@GodsBoss The fact is that the scicraft server and its players are focused solely on building and optimizing farms. Factions players do not have incentive to build perfectly optimized farms, because their farms could be destroyed. A better comparison would be skyblock vs scicraft. Those are both communities built on efficiency. If there is any community that could rival the scicrafters, it'll logically be a skyblock server

Hey, faction server owner for 3 years here. I know this is an Old comment, but if you are still curious about this, no. The only different mechanics used for ground items on most faction servers is entity merging, which in this case, would barely be a factor either way.

@@katteisace4563 you speak with such certainty yet you are incorrect. Entity merging has worked for items since as long as I can remember. It's always been a spigot configuration option. Mob merging was only done on certain servers. Generally most servers, including my own, would greatly decrease the mob cap instead, and I believe we also had a plugin that limited mobs per chunk (to avoid afk spawners from building up to a ridiculous amount.) Mob merging was always buggy and didn't feel right. Even with 150 players on at our peak times lag was under control well enough not to have to use that

Random Guy mob merging is a standard on 90% of factions servers. Your server being special is an outlier and can’t be considered. It may perhaps be an option, but I have never found a server that uses it, further more I have played over 50 faction servers and none of them have used this “feature “ you insist exists, and even more, this feature would be redundant as minecraft already stacks items and has incredible item optimization for non-moving items.

Yeah, if you zero-tick the cactus on the same tick where it gets placed into a water block while the server is lagging at more than 200 mspt you can make the cactus block itself waterlogged so any items that fall back onto it float rather than being destroyed. :P

@@snipplez8657 There were two major things wrong with those people's comments: 1. They were talking about mod-specific designs in a vanilla context. They probably didn't realize, so they had to be corrected. 2. They didn't include proof. Ilmango went looking for it (even though he didn't have to, but he's a good scientist), and found a bunch of videos that apparently didn't state the "chunk hopper" feature either. In fact, the designs he found were inefficient both with and without chunk hoppers, because either the loss rate is too high (without) or the density is too low (with). Ilmango chose to address the variant applicable to his context, i.e. in a vanilla environment.

items tend to get stuck on the cross sections that mango placed signs under. to fix the problem place an open fence gate (on the block above the sign in the tutorial) before putting in the water. after fixing the water in, the block where the sign supposed to go and 2 blocks next to it will have no water, just mine those out making 3x1 gap. hope it helps.

The only reason why the cactus farms are faster in Factions is because there a custom plugins to automatically pickup cactus when it breaks. This means there is no need to worry about the items being lost. Therefore the only thing important thing with cactus farms in factions is density.

Some people say that there is no need for such big cactus farm, because it's useless, because you don't need that much cacti. But if you use this argument, building mansions and castles is also useless, because you could just dig a small hole and forever stay in it with everything needed for survival. Different players like different things, that's why some people build giant mansions and others build giant farms. Because they enjoy it.

it works in 1.16 still but you need to make one adjustment because the items that float on to the "saddle" sections of the water (where it is stationary) just get stuck and float on top without going through the sign but if you place the signs one block lower on the fence post then the stationary water is able to flow down a block and pull any floating items down. you just need to place a temporary block above it during construction to ensure the water flows properly and once it does you can remove it. not sure what version it stopped working on but that last time i built a cactus farm was in 1.12 when items did not float. i have not tried this farm in 1.13 which is when this feature was added so i assume that is when it broke. if you build it with this adjustment it should work nicely in all the versions but otherwise this is by far my favorite farm style and i have been using it for a long time now. also place the sand directly on the floor instead of having that extra glass block. it is unnecessary and only adds to the build height.

Factions usually have crop hoppers or some type of hopper that picks up any item that is droped, thats why its so "fast" it uses the most space and collects all that could be produced in that area.

Fabulous research, as usual. Oddly, I've seen some discussion on the utility of cactus farming, the question being whether or not it is even worth it to farm cacti on this scale. It is my opinion that a compact, high-efficiency cactus farm has high utility, and is worth the effort on the basis of the XP earned by smelting. Coupled with a decent kelp farm, or fueled by the coal generated from a wither skellie farm, it does very nicely for XP. Other players have pointed out that there are other ways to get XP, and that's true, but sometimes mob-based XP farms on busy servers may not be as dependable. We have a zombie pigman farm that generates serious XP, and a guardian farm, and a half-dozen other methods to generate XP in addition to all that, but rates drop when there are other people on the server. When you just need to heal up your elytra or a couple of tools real quick, it does the job very nicely - even when the server is busy. And in addition to the XP, such a farm will also provide dye, bone meal (in the next update), etc. Totally worth it. Again, great video.

Cactus is cheap to build, which is handy for early money on economy servers. It also depends on what the prices are IN the economy of a server, sometimes cactus or dyes are one of the better money-making options PERIOD. Cactus into furnaces for dye is ALWAYS handy for quick, safe, and easy XP to fix mending tools or level up with - not always the "best" option but usually one of the most economical options.

bone farms still make you craft bone meal so you can't have a 100% automated system in whatever you use it for, like a tree farm. Furnace XP is also more automated, you don't have to sit somewhere and hit things, you can walk up and take something out to get all the xp at once. But yeah, it isn't extremely necessary.

I used a very similar design to the last one you showed on the video but I just used a single water source to create a diamond and then I just put holes in the ground next to the end of water. And you can just tile it in diagonal squares. Great video.

If you don't have a "pop filter", you might look into one, I bet it would increase your viewer retention, because the "sss" spikes in the audio in this video make it difficult to keep watching. I studied this video and got greatly inspired and improved this concept from Xisuma ,thank you so much for this video , couldnt have done it without you . Each floor is only 3 block high , instead of 5 , so it still collect 99% of cacti but it is 40% more compact (f my calculation is right)if not , forgive my maths ,here it goes : Replace water with hoppers (put the hoppers at exact same height as sand) and have interchanging floors to save 2 blocs height ,illmango can make a new video my design is even more efficient ;) here is a little plan I hope it can help: Layout from the side : C= cactus H=hopper S= sand F= fence F F C C C HSHSHS F F F C C C SHSHSH here is the Hopper/Sand (no cactus or fence placed * ) layout from above: HHHHHHH> HSHSHS.H> HHHHHHH>connect to chests HSHSHS.H> HHHHHHH> (I guess you could use enderrods as well under the fences , i just dont have those on my faction server *) Rinse and repeat , its most expensive design , most compact and most efficient :p

The Xisuma design when built correctly is 4 layers high per floor, not 5 (which is mentioned in this video) - and that's one HECK of a lot of hoppers, which have their own lag issues. More space efficient though *IF* you are on a server that doesn't limit hoppers (most don't), but a LOT less lag efficient with that many hoppers.

in faction servers you have a limit of chunks you can claim and most of the "base" is defense and vault. at the start they make a cactus farm and later use that same space to make a mob spawner grinder. because of that they cram making it look like a good idea in theory.

The "Factions" design is actually an EVERY OTHER ROW Factions design, not the actual Factions design. The full design fills every row with cactus, in an alternating pattern - and is completely unusable without a Chunk Hopper mod (and has some losses even then), a Crop Hopper mod (best option), or some sort of "other" device that includes the same functionality like a Void Chest (NOT the FTM Void Chest). It is an attempt to make a Factions design usable without the mods - but as you point out it doesn't work well.

Regarding faction servers, the ultra compact design is usually the go to in the most popular faction servers as they typically have a plugin designed to negate the effect of cactus being destroyed. Typically the plugin automatically collects the cactus when it breaks in a chunk, removing the problem of transporting the item itsself to a hopper. Players use a "Chunk Hopper" (TheArchon.pvp, Skyblock.us) custom item to perform this process; making the ultra compact design really the best in class for faction servers. If the server your playing on doesn't have a plugin like this though, the final design is definitely the best. Good work Ilmango, keep it up!

This reminds me of a pumpkin farm that I saw on this one factions server that went from bedrock to build limit, was completely encased, and harvested with a button hidden deep in the machine so random people couldn't lag out the server with it.

So, i've made around 33 modules on a skyblock survival world in 1.13. The little areas where you have to break the slab underneath and place a sign. The cactus do not fall down, instead, they just float on the side and don't do anything. I do not know a way around it.

another important aspect in the build effort is the material rarity/effort to collect. The more scarce resources (such as the string or end rods) would take much more effort to gather in large quantities than say fences or water sources. You can just have the outer water sources, and punch out all of the blocks that dont have water on them, and have a giant water bowl at the bottom to collect all the items that fall through the layer. It saves alot of blocks.

The final design doesn't actually work in 1.13+ The Cacti will get stuck on the still water if they flow in from a block next to it

The non-source still water forms exactly between each pair of holes, 3 blocks away from each hole. So, before placing the water, place an open fence gate on each block that's in the middle of 2 holes. Once you place your water, it will form a 3x1 gap around the fence gate. You can then remove the 3 blocks that aren't covered in water to create a 3x1 hole. As long as you don't place or remove blocks directly by this hole, the water will not flow into it. For max sturdiness, you can place 3 open fence gates across each of the 3x1 holes. This will ensure water doesn't flow into the hole no matter what.

Ilmango I'd like to share some insight on why factions players use this cactus farm design. We build these farms since they can be created extremely quickly and in a large quantity. On most competetive faction servers when the map resets there is around a week of what is called a "grace period" where tnt and other methods of raiding are disabled. In this time factions race to get up farms (or other methods of making money), a base, and defenses. This "faction cactus farm" design can be made EXTREMELY quickly in a very large area using a mod called "Schematica" with printer mode. The design isn't necessarily the most efficient but because of how easy it is to make and how on most servers can net you a lot of easy money early on into the map people tend to make it. Edit: Forgot to mention that on a lot of servers there are "crop hoppers" hoppers that automatically pickup crops (cane, cactus whatever) in a chunk.
