Has someone close to you chosen a medically-assisted death? The total number of Canadians requesting MAID rises 30% or so every year, accounting for just over 4% of all deaths in Canada in 2022. While concerns remain - including implications for people living with mental health challenges, severe disabilities, or in extreme poverty - MAID appears to be accepted by the general public as a relatively uncontroversial end of life decision. Is it? We get into it with National Post columnist Tristin Hopper in this episode of Real Talk.
0:45 | But first...what do vaccines have to do with a family doctor shortage across the country? Probably nothing...but Ryan's noticing a trend in the responses to our July 17 episode with Alberta Medical Association president Dr. Paul Parks.

I'll share a story here that I'm only comfortable sharing in this forum because I'm not using my real name on this account. But my dad passed away in March 2022 from Metastatic Prostate Cancer. It had spread to his hips/lower back and he was completely bed ridden. His freedom of movement was greatly impeded by the cancer. He was in extreme pain and was extremely miserable. He elected for MAID since he couldn't bear the pain any longer. MAID saved him from anymore prolonged suffering. It's an odd thing to be thankful for, but I'm grateful that he could access that resource. We can debate who should have access to it, but it was a much better option for my dad than letting him pass on, slowly, and in extreme pain.

I use my name all the time here, I won't speak for my family but I saw my grandmother before she passed. My grandfather took me and my sister. My grandmother had no idea WHO she was, who we were, no idea WHAT was going on. She would trip out into various spots of her young life, thining she was 8, then 12. Intermittent with that she was in anguish. I don't speak for my family because it was a long time ago, maybe my memory is bad, but it certainly scarred me. The reality is that these people are pumped with expensive drugs basically till they die of exhaustion or some medical practitioner 'forgets' their drugs and they pass. I get pretty livid when I hear CONSERVATIVES, and peopel supposedly closer to libertarians arguing the state has the right to keep you in whatever condition til you pass. And worse of all, they talk like its Trudeau, when its the dam supreme court. If anything I know tons of examples where RELIGIOUS hospitals use workarounds. If you won't do euthanasia, get the f*&^% out of the way and let somebody in who will, because hospice workers are the angels, these religious hospitals just prove they are NO place interested in healing.

@@mikearchibald744 my dad was perfectly cogent and still himself. But the reality facing him, between his own mortality and the extreme pain, he saw no other option. Ultimately, it was his decision and his alone.

Im all for this.... i think if you are dying anyways it should be on your terms. But i, myself go even further.... imo someone who is severely depressed and can not pull through it. Someone that has tried a bunch of different methods and meds and nothing has helped, i think this should be an option. I do think you should have to counseling to know whether you understand what it is and you are making the decision in your right state of mind. This should be allowed. I dont think people should have to choose other methods of self deletion, when this is available.

There is more cancer diagnoses because we are better at diagnosing cancer. Also, there are more and more chemicals and toxins we are exposed to that cause more cancer.

Still suspicious so many cases popped up right after the vacks, my mother got breast cancer no history of it in the family. Friends mom collapsed on treadmill, was a health nut. Good friend died Stage 4 advanced quickly, within 1.5 yr she was gone. Tons of strange coincidences. I dont subscribe to any theory in particular I'm just stating pieces of my personal data

@@TheREALTyreeSneed2 Personal data never means much. Breast cancer increased rapidly due to the lack of testing in provinces due to covid. Breast cancer is only FIVE to TEN percent hereditary, so that means nothing. Stage four is ALREADY advanced, so more than a year is surprising. During exercise is WHEN most people collapse. Did your friends mom get a vaccine then go for a run? I doubt it. Thats the kind of garbage that keeps conspiracy theories alive. COVID does all those things. Online ALL you hear about is vaccines when COVID causes far more severe reactions, thats kind of the point. MORE young men develop myocarditis from covid than they do from vaccines, but all you hear about is vaccines. In Israel they used a study saying 'look, more men got myocarditis' because they called the ambulance". But yet NOBODY died. So likely these young men were warned before and called an ambulance when they thought they needed to. In other words, the system worked. My mother had knee pain that lasted a year. She's old, so she never got another vaccine, as per recommendations. My brother was one of the rare people whose tongue swelled up. What happened? Well, his tongue swelled up....that was it. This past winter at work covid went through our workplace. We were scheduled to get vaccinated monday, on friday we got covid and were sicker than we've been in our adult life. The ONLY one that didn't was the person who was vaccinated. People you know being sick are not 'coincidences', its a fact of life.

@@tlachacz yea support science, but why do we have fructose corn syrup in everything.. my point is they probably have a cure for everything but continue to poison us, you can't deny there are many incentives for big pharma to lie, plan obsolescence, and deny people the right to sue should something go wrong as a side effect of their heavily pushed shots... also not to mention collude with food companies to use poisonous ingredients when we can better afford using healthy ingredients but then lose billions in the pharma industry

my problem with MAID has been a deep concern for the vulnerable, yes the disabled but also those with an illness who choose to die naturally who have good and bad days and may feel as though their choice burdens the system and family. Our health care system is a mess and palliative care is not appropriately funded, my fear is people will choose MAID b/c they aren't getting proper care and support to live.

Ryan I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. Suicide is such a shock. Your response is completely normal. Take all the time you need. I read a good book that might be helpful to you if you haven’t already read it… No Time to Say Goodbye. It is a book about peoples experiences with suicide. It helped me enormously after my brother took his life. I had mentioned here in the chat long ago when I was able to listen live, I lost my brother to suicide. There is nothing else that brings such despair to the survivors. There is guilt, fear, hopelessness, anger, heartbreak. It is different than any other death. My sister 3 years later was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and she died 9 were after her diagnosis. We had a bit of time to get used to the fact she was going to die. Still sudden, but at least a knowing of what was coming. She died at home in her boyfriend’s arms. My first husband (we were divorced but remained best of friends) died of a heart attack on our Wedding Anniversary. Such irony. I struggle with his death and my brothers the most. My Dad died 9 years ago from Lung Cancer at home. It doesn’t get better than that. Recently, I had a close friend who chose MAID. She had ALS. She was so courageous! Her funeral was a true celebration of life ❤. However, most recently this past October my Mom went into the Grey Nuns with a twisted bowel. She died January 10th. I believe if my mom knew what was facing her, she would have chosen MAID. I have never felt such powerlessness and anger then I have with that experience. I believe the hospital was so messed up due to shortages in staff miscommunication different doctors with different opinions. It is a well-known fact that people with an obstructed bowel literally starve to death, they wind up fecally incontinent. My mom couldn’t even get up and walk. They left her in the surgical ward instead of moving her to the geriatric ward or even into palliative. They did not have the guts to tell us that, she was going to die. These doctors that play God and keep people in the dark about their likely outcomes, that don’t educate them on Medical Assistance in Dying infuriate me. What I dealt with in those 2 1/2 months at the hospital was nothing short of trauma inducing. I don’t think I took a breath until two months after she died. My heart still aches for what she had to endure. Her dignity was stripped away because Doctors don’t communicate with each other. The hospitals don’t even advise the family doctors that their patient is in hospital. Nor do they advise them of their death. Our medical system from what I’ve experienced is broken, maybe not completely. I had a hip replaced two years ago stellar experience. Having said that, I was never followed up for my 12 month appointment to see the surgeon again. 😂 I am very grateful that you had Tristan on. Something I have been thinking about and will perhaps email you about is the future of the business of death, if you will. Because of all the experience I have gone through with death… I decided to take a Death Doula course. We were discussing just this topic and how people are in no way prepared to deal with death in its many forms. The notion behind being a Doula is really a desire to serve others at the most joyous and most difficult time in their lives. I will email you some details on this and it might give you an idea for a show sometime.❤❤ In the meantime, Ryan… you still gotta feel all the feels😢 I wish you a peaceful heart.💜 Hope Springs AKA Patti🌺
