More countries call on travellers to avoid Lebanon

A growing number of countries are calling on citizens to avoid travelling to Lebanon as fears grow of further escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. But Lebanese expats continued to pour in this week, saying the conflict won’t stop them from visiting their country. Priyanka Navani has this report from the coastal city of Batroun.

As an American who's traveled to over 80 countries I've done pretty well to just about disregard these government warnings. I take them into consideration, especially if there is a specific threat mentioned, for example high incidents of kidnapping in a particular region, high rates of violent crime, police corruption, something like that. But these governments are far too quick to scare people from traveling. These places are dangerous, do not travel. Perhaps the danger is you might hear a different point of view or get some perspective about certain issues the government wants to control opinion on.

Great reporting! I’m from Norway and I got the chance to discover beautiful Lebanon about 11 years ago for my study abroad year at the extraordinary American University of Beirut. The year I spent in Lebanon was one of the best years in my life! What a gorgeous country! What to say about their ancient history and incredible monuments older than Rome and Greece combined! The Alphabet was invented in the ancient Mediterranean Phoenician city of Byblos, Europe was born in the exquisite Mediterranean city of Tyre.. last but not least, I love Lebanese food!!!

The problem is that if you see and compare the definitions and the use of difference between an expat and an immigrant, expat is always used for people from western countries if they live anywhere other than their own country. However, if a person is not from western countries or from " 3rd world countries" moves to developed countries, he/she is always labeled as an immigrant no matter how qualified, educated or skilled they are and being very active part of the countries they are "expat" in.
