I love this episode so much! It gets a lot of hate for the Cyberwoman costume (rightfully so), but ignoring that, the story is really good, especially in regards to Ianto's backstory & his general feelings and emotions.

Yeah this is where Torchwood excels - the grey areas, the moral dilemmas, the what if. Yanto didn't do "wrong" in trying to save Lisa... where he went wrong is in doing it alone and not accepting that there might not be a way back. He "let" her kill, covered it up, and then tried to fight the team for stopping her. Where is the line... hard to say but he definitely stepped over it.

While the flashbacks are obviously set at Torchwood London during the S2 finale of Doctor Who, Ianto and Lisa did not appear in those episodes. One thing we did see there though is that Yvonne Hartmann obviously didn't mid her staff having workplace romances, so it's not surprisng that Ianto and Lisa were both coworkers and in a relationship there before she was half-converted. I'm glad you enjoyed this more than I did, the best episodes of the season in my opinion are all much later ones. Ghost Machine was pretty good one as well though.

Yes! Lisa and Ianto worked in the same Torchwood as the one we saw in the Doctor Who season 2 finale with the Cybermen and Daleks, we just never saw them in Doctor Who itself. As for this episode, while far from perfect, it's cool seeing the bloodier side of the Cybermen that they can't really show in DW. They've always been one of the more disturbing monsters in terms of concept, so getting to see just how graphic becoming a Cyberman is, and what happens when the human side conflicts with the Cyber side is an interesting idea. Shame about the actual Cyberwoman suit though. Cyber bra AND high heels? Was that really what the Cybermen were thinking when the Daleks were attacking? 🤣

The damn heels throw me everytime. At least with the cyberbikini the logic (not the execution which is terrible) makes some sense, rush job exo-skeleton to make a human stronger but no time for a suit. but the heels, were the cybermen running into the issue of being 3 inches too short to kill the Daleks. Not enough material to whip up some platform boots or something. absolutely 0 logic there.

7:41 They have to keep showing it because otherwise you might forget that this is Serious Adult Drama for Adults. Like Lisa, this episode is something of a hybrid. In places it goes in for a genuinely mature examination of the implications of Cyber-conversion and the horrors that it entails, but then there are also the 'gratuitous titillation and violence because in _this_ show we can be all edgy' moments.

Visuals and Costume (torchwood trying to be edgy) really brought episode down But this stuff was scary when i was a kid (locked environment and body horror horror that we don’t see often) Some people think Ianto acting upset is not great/over the top but honestly feel its a fresh unique ugly crying genuine reaction more than most stuff you see nowadays Music is a banger Far far far from Chibnalls worst

This episode ties into the aftermath of the series 2 finale and Honestly the concept of that is really good. Lisa being a partially converted cyberman and even the music score is great for this episode. The costume really takes away from the episode and they could have gone full body horror with this but they didn't and its a shame they don't do more especially because its torchwood with mature content

People have a lot of complaints about the suit here, for me the biggest one is an ongoing issue throughout the franchise; are Cybermen effectively robots with Brains and a few other organic parts grafted into themselves, or effectively evil Iron Man suits? Some episodes say one thing, some say the other.

I think it depends on the origins of the cybermen in the specific storyline - they sort of explain it in this episode when they say that by the end of the battle of canary wharf the cybermen were rushing/running out of parts, and therefore began grafting cyber parts to humans (evil iron man suits) whereas the “proper”, non-rushed conversion process may involve using human organs in more robotic bodies. In other episodes, the cybermen have different origins (mondasian cybermen, the ones from pete’s world) and so have conversion processes that fit with the origin - some with more cyber parts, some with more human parts. This is just my opinion/how I would explain it, I don’t know how the writers would, but doctor who continuity is so convoluted and contradictory anyway 😂

The many Doctor Who villains or similarities or 'characters' or other episodes done better then DW did is what I think Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures do well but yeah it's just S1&2 of TW that are good, few eh episodes and S3 sucks and S4 is S1&2 but worse. Cyber woman is a fair concept I think especially even compared to a later DW Cyberman episode but otherwise. Yeah was surprised it ties into the Season 2 finale. I mostly just remember the S3 or 4 related moments later on. Well seeing how people focus on emotions too much (a little bit is still fine and some whims are fine) then critical thinking not just logic yeah I'd say then sure upgrades in terms of armour then well skins/clothes not just yeah yeah mentally upgraded not exactly. Though some people being emotionally intelligent to manipulate is it's own thing but with so many people lacking critical thinking I wouldn't be surprised how much an upgrade it is to their brains then just the armour upgrade. Yeah Cyber dating services. Yeah they do push the melodrama or particular weird yep relationships or questionable decisions. The pizza, savour the slices from soggyness and underground leaving during a Cyber attack. The delivery people can deal with the consequences. What a transplant.... Yeah not the same but still it's something continued then the intended. She is a survivor but yeah wanting the original. Some good moments for sure. Fair using of his unkillable state. The morals, what the team will risk, what questions to ask if the Cybermen or other things happen while the Doctor isn't around. To me this Cyber women episode seems like DW S1 the oh Long game solved so Ep11&12 changed kind of fair things we get to see of a what if or the yes relationship questioning and attachment/letting go (even if just to save on budget the reuse of the station or yes all inside Torchwood in this case as well likely, but the questions and consequences were handled well enough). Yeah they do do that sometimes with female characters designs very fan service or not practical enough. It is a bit ridiculous and showy for sure. Not always that great. Some do a fair job but yes they are designed for obvious reasons of course. To me when it comes to like more even wrap around silk or others or whatever unique clothes sure but otherwise it is odd what elements they want to show off the body and how much they want to show the body in certain ways to show off for appeal. They look odd usually.

This is the episode that showed me that Chris Chibnall has no regard for continuity and canon. Cybermen have no gender. Especially the version of Cybermen that were supposed to have converted her. They remove the head first, so she should not have had her body.
