The picture at the end was one of the Cottingley Fairy pictures from 1917. Which convinced many people including the Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of the existence of fairies. In Torchwood it goes to show that they exist out of our timeframe Jasmine appearing in 1917.

Was going to make a similar comment myself, so glad I checked that I wouldn't be repeating. I already knew some stuff about those fairy "photos" before I saw this when it first aired. The episode is still great without that context, but knowing the history takes it to another level. Really clever writing.

Estelle's house (or at least the house they used for the exterior) is about 5 minutes from where I live.

This is my favorite ep of season 1. There are a couple of other real good episodes this season but this one has always stood out in my memory.

This is a very significant moment in the series; Jack makes an apparently completely ruthless decision "for the greater good" without consultation or explanation--just because he knows, from long experience, that such sacrifices are sometimes unavoidable...

It’s Torchwood. Of course it’s not a happy ending.

Fairy folklore is deep and complex. What's fascinating to me is that some people still claim to have encountered them, here in the 21st Century. Generally, they are seen as ambivalent creatures who may be helpful one minute, and treacherous the next. Don't ever be in their debt, and don't accept favours from strangers, who might be the Fae in disguise, etc. I live in England where, if you ernestly discuss fairies you will probably be carted off in the back of a van. Less so in Ireland.

I feel like there is a subculture of people who do claim to see them. I knew about the fairy rings because of stuff ive seen on the internet before and i feel like all ive seen is scary things! So hopefully ill never encounter them lol

Mara is a classic Doctor Who villain! They are a pixie-wraith kind of being, unfortunately they only appear in the classic show and lives of mentions only in modern shows

Love this one! (All my favourite episodes from the first two series are written either by women or by PJ Hammond, creator of the amazing _Sapphire_ _and_ _Steel.)_ The only thing that would make it better for me would be if the fairies hadn't been so visible at the barbeque - if they'd stuck to the "corner of the eye" thing. I assume they killed Estelle because she was drawing attention to them - and yes, that's the only death we care about.

I like this episode quite a lot - it does a great job at showing how morally ambiguous Jack has become since not being in The Doctor's presence for so long (akin to hid behaviour in The Empty Child before he meets The Doctor & Rose). If The Doctor was facing this situation, he would've searched long & hard for a way to resolve the issue/conflict without letting them take this "chosen one" - but on the other hand, this could also (and probably would have) led to more harm & deaths than just letting them take the girl. Jack knows it's not worth the risk, because so many more innocent (and not-so innocent) people would die. Jack solely sees the ‘bad’ in the Fairies, like the rest of the Torchwood team sees Jack's actions this episode as ‘bad’, but in fact the Fairies themselves are also morally ambiguous or morally ‘grey’, because they killed a paedophile & an abusive step-dad, and scared school bullies to protect Jasmine. Also, I believe the Fairies killed Estelle because she was photographing them & documenting them, which could threaten their existence/plan/purpose. I find this sort of stuff so interesting, because even though it's fictional, it's good at representing how most people would act & behave when something dear to them (like family or friends) is threatened - outsiders may not be able to justify it, but those involved can. The complex nature of morality - good, bad, and in-between - is fascinating, because above all else it depends on the viewpoint/belief of the individual, rather than a set-in-stone *fact*. For example, if someone killed someone, most people would agree that that's ‘bad’. But change or add context as to *why* Person A killed Person B, and people will have differing viewpoints.

Hello Emme!🙂 Great reactions to this Torchwood episode with a very interesting fantasy element!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏 P.S. - I just bought the individual seasons of Matt Smith as Doctor Who (UK versions) Region Free, used on bluray. The complete set of Matt Smith has been out of print for a long time now.

You are quite right in the old stories the fairy folk were something to be afraid of and to placate.

Forgot how this one ended, felt a bit strange. I guess it shows that the torchwood team aren't quite as capable as the doctor. And Jack isn't quite as heroic when he's not with the doctor. Interesting.

A fair use of faeries/fairies, good/bad or child imagination, I forget about Estelle and the Jack from the past and 'father' part. I only vaguely remember these Torchwood episodes then go oh yeah that and that. A fair episode. Not all deaths for characters deserve sympathy it's their moments that show enough. Also yeah the 'plot convenience' ignorance of characters sigh. Or the Mara as Classic Who related as never seen an episode about them it's much older then Classic Who episodes I've seen. I do wish tv shows did the imagination in certain adults it would be nice as some people don't let that side of them go and still have that creative side to them not oh imagination is for children only, you have to be adult and boring and forget things. I still remember other things or seek imagination and use my brain between situations it's not that hard. Hardly delusional if can swap between adult and still being creative or enjoying kids media then oh it has to be mature and dull that some adult/teens media does focus on a lot when some kids media does a better job sometimes with their worlds or in games gameplay then being slow and boring but oh themes/tone darker then whatever kids horror exists and does a fair job of their fears they understand. Oh well.
