As a big ace attorney fan, Ace Attorney: Conflict of Interest has always been one of my favorites. It's sort of an alternate universe thing that takes place instead of the 5th game, and were it official, it would be considered one of the top in the series. It's seriously so good.

Thanks for sharing more stuff! I do want to share some frustration about your framing of things in the intro. By and large all of this is perfectly legal in the US and has been protected in various ways. Treating it like a taboo gives more power to the corporations that have been bullying creators in various ways. Most times things are "DMCA-ed" it's not actually a DMCA claim but simply an automated form or process that a company has put up for CYA purposes. Don't let them scare you into thinking that they hold more power than they do.

Looks like, with the aid of fans, you've gotten into some deeper niche fan projects now. Unlike last time, here the only one I knew about before was Rock 'N Roll. There is such an amazing amount of quality content out there in the fan space, it's insane, and way more than one person could ever hope to cover adequately.

The fact that Ring Racers, with all those slopes, is built on top of the Doom engine like SRB2 is insane.

I love seeing more appreciation for fan projects these days! Might I recommend a few more? More hardcore smash fans likely know, but there are a good amount of fan made Smash projects! Project+ is an overhaul of Brawl that plays more like Melee and even goes as far as to change the moveset of characters to make them more viable. Melee itself has Beyond Melee which tweaks more characters to be more usable, and adds some new ones into the mix! Super Mario 64 has an entire community dedicated to creating their own projects that range from single levels, to games larger than SM64 itself! Some of my personal favorites are B3313 (inspired heavily by Beta SM64 and has 460 stars total!) Super Mario Star Road (a classic major SM64 game with 130 stars), and SM64: The Green Comet (Mario 64 with Green Stars like Mario Galaxy 2!) On another Mario note, Super Mario Sunshine just got a new mod recently released called Super Mario Eclipse! It is basically a fanmade sequel/successor to SMS with 240 Shines and new characters, music, story, it's just... Really really big! A LOT of Sonic fans are aware of fan games, and that is partly due to the existence of SAGE (Sonic Amateur Games Expo!), which is an event that showcases a whole bunch of not only Sonic fan games, but just really cool projects in general! It is focused mainly on demos of games, so you'd be playing only snippets of what's to come, but it's still really cool to see all the work people put into their games! Going back to Mario, Super Mario World, and the New Super Mario Bros. series both have modding scenes that put out some really incredible stuff! Especially the SMW creators, they are so talented and worth checking out if you love 2D Mario games! On the Mariokart side of things, there exists such a thing called CTGP (Custom Track Grand Prix) which is a collection of some of the Mariokart modding community's most popular custom tracks! Pretty much every MK series entry has a version of this now, so pick your favorite and race some awesome tracks! The more recent entries even support online play! The last thing I'll recommend might not fall into "fan project" exactly, but they are still fun to look into, and that's Randomizers! They basically take a game like Zelda, and move all the items into different spots, forcing you to do things in a completely different order than the original game! There are... So many of these, for so many games. I'd personally recommend the Super Metroid, and Zelda randomizers as they fit well with the formula! Again, happy to see so many people giving these fan projects the love they deserve! Hope someone reading this checks out some of these!

If you're looking for fan games that might as well be official then look no further than Streets of Rage Remake, despite its name it's not just a remake of the first Streets of Rage but also compilation of the three Genesis games and a fan sequel, old and new characters, remixed music and faithfully recreated gameplay with lots of customization.

One of my favorite fan games that doesn’t get talked about much is Mega Man Day in the Limelight 2. Day in the Limelight is a series of fan games where the idea is you’re playing as the Robot Masters fighting other Robot Masters, so for example the first game was, you’re playing as Mega Man 1’s Robot Masters against the ones from Mega Man 2 and there would be stages assigned to what characters the game will have you play, so like Guts Man would be assigned to Crash Man’s level, Ice Man would be assigned to Heat Man’s level, ect. The second game is Mega Man 2 Robot Masters version the ones from Mega Man 3, and the reason why this one is so good is because it applies classic Mega Man customs a lot more than the first game did. For example in the first game you were completely restricted on who you got to play as based on what level you picked. In the second game while Robot Masters are still assigned to specific stages, when you beat those stages you unlock the Robot Masters to be able to swap to in all the other stages, so for example Wood Man is assigned to Spark Man’s stage, when you beat Spark Man, now you can take Wood Man into any of the other stages, and there’s classic style Robot Master weaknesses and everything to go along with this so you get this fun dynamic that goes a long way in changing up multiple play throughs. Really cool fan game. There was a third one in development but I have no idea what the state of it is these days.

I’m 35 and these “fan games” really get me excited. It’s not that I don’t like new stuff coming out. But a lot of these old games had a good thing going. Like platforming. It’s such a tried true for formula that’s has so much to offer. I’m happy that the people have gone back and given love to these older (but great) games styles.

Speaking of fangames, I remembered one Live a Live fangame which nowadays is Lost Media. Nope, I'm not talking about Touhou a Live, but of Forgotten Wings. It's supposed to be a retelling of the Middle Ages Chapter made in RPG Maker VX, but with new characters and new enemies. Nowadays its all but forgotten, with the demo blocked with a password. It only exists as a machinima on nicovideo, and untranslated to boot. There's also a video on KZbin about the fangame, but that's it. Just... Don't try to bother the "owner" of the translations.

If you're looking for more recommendations, Final Fantasy Renaissance is a very good remake of FFI that adds many new classes and unique mechanics pertaining to those classes. New mechanics are added to existing classes, a lot of the games bugs were fixed up, and there's a mode where you can get rid of all the new stuff and just play a solid port of the original with better resolution and quality of life without a complete graphical and musical overhaul like most ports or remakes. It's a great experience with tons of replay value and potential, and more FF fans should give it a shot.

Another fantastic fangame I have not seen anyone mentioning is Sonic Project 06 or P06 as is usually called. It's a fantastic remake of the awful Sonic The Hedgehog from 2006, it takes its level desing but overhauls the gameplay from all the characters and fixes most of the games issues and bugs. Also Sega is pretty chill about fan games, it's policy is that as long you don't charge for the game/mod then it's free game, the sonic community it's very lucky about that compared to anything related to nintendo.

No mention of Ring Racers' inital teething troubles at launch I see. People like me were turned off from the game initially because of its rough state at release, and it would be cool to see some comparisons between how it was then, and how it is now for people like me to know if it's worth giving a chance now.

I've mostly had some experience with several titles in the Mario Kart series and tried Ring Racers 2.3 out after seeing it was a sequel to SRB2 kart (wanted to play that but the meat of that game was the online functionality). I've been having a blast with it so far. It's definitely more difficult than what I've played before, but I do like how it has more challenge than most of these type of games. From what I've understood, the original 2.0 release had far harsher AI, which got toned down in 2.1 according to the patch notes, and a large number of other meaningful changes seem to have been added since then. Item balance, easier-to-get chao keys. I think you definitely should give it a second try.
