It’s rare to see a classic Benz on the side of the road and that speaks volumes. I had a summer job on a farm as a student and the old farmer used to say, “Oil is cheaper than iron” and that stuck with me. If. Was down to my last $50 and it was time for an oil change, the oil got changed. I had a ‘95 Saturn SW1 that I drove for 10 years and put well over 200,000 miles on it and had changed the oil religiously every 3000 miles. It had a head gasket leak and when they repaired it, they noted there was virtually no wear to the cylinders - the factory cross-hatching was still obvious. Almost everything you and my fellow subscribers have mentioned are simple, cheap things that make these cars among the most dependable and cheapest cars to own. And my oil change story has been repeated with an ‘05 ECHO that I had until ‘16 with the same mileage and a ‘10 Grand Caravan that we still drive with ~ 175,000 on the clock, so you can imagine the life you could get from a quality Benz with a bit of consistent care! My ‘05 C240 only has ~ 120,000 so too young to count!

Another version of the old farmer's saying I've heard is that "Oil is cheaper than an engine rebuild."

My 240d did the first week I had it! That's when I figured out the fuel gauge was stuck at half and I ran it outta fuel 🤣🤣🤣 Haha it's been reliable as a brick.

Great video as always. I totally agree with what you said about it being a learning experience. I started with a 1987 300SDL, which I mainly paid for all maintenance on. Since then, I've had several 300SDs, a couple of 240Ds, and a couple of 300Ds. It's actually somewhat enjoyable to work on them yourself. It was definitely a learning experience. The more you tinker with your car, the more you learn about it. I've learned a whole lot over the past 24 years driving those great old diesels! 752K miles I got out of my 1984 300SD, and it was largely due to regular maintenance. It's the most important thing! Gotta change the oil in my 83 300SD tomorrow. Nice that I don't have to pay someone else to do it! Thanks for all your great videos. I enjoy them so much.

Pierre, nice video, thanks for taking the time. True, we should learn from our mistakes..When people ask me for a mechanical repair I hesitate because I am afraid of making a mistake in their cars. Once, I installed the wrong oil filter on my car, driving on the highway it started leaking fast, smoke, lights, and I had to buy the correct one and made the repair on site. Other, when parts, bolts, etc fell on the engine compartment and you have to fish them.... Have a great weekend!

I am so proud of myself and my Mercedes. I got my 1990 300d to not leave a spot of anything on a fresh driveway parked for the weekend. I used to avoid any new concrete. The main problem was the lower o ring on the injection pump lower cover, It would leak while parked and make a heck of a mess before I changed it . I think I have one of my forever cars.

People are haters man! Screw them! If you got haters your doing something right! Btw I’m a 1988 560SL owner. Did a full Euro swap (front and rear bumpers, headlights) did not do rear tails. Cabernet red over Palmino

Hi Pierre Merry Christmas Thanks for the mention Agreed lights are very important and especially brake lights not only to show your stopping but to cancel your cruise control ( assuming other ways to cancel too haven’t got my cruise working yet consistently) W126 300SE I was warned not to use the cruise control when we got the car and quickly worked out I had no brake lights that turned out to be a dud brake light switch .A very easy fix Cheers Michael Harrison Tasmania Australia

I change the oil and filter on my '81 240D every 3000 miles. At the same time, I also do a diesel purge , using a new pre filter. Some say it's an over kill, but I think in the long run, it's money well spent.

Happy Christmas Pierre,,, please can you do something on practical interior care, rust prevention, its always mechanical stuff. things like cracking dashboard, bad doorcards doorseals, , seat springs,,rusting window frames, these things are the bane of Mercedes ownership. the little things that can cost a fortune, any help would be much appreciated.

Yes agree... and to add to your comment... interior water prevention like the rubber door seal failure and other ways water gets into the interior and rusts the floors from the inside out. That drives me crazy

LOL I was planing to change full filter and now you scared me, Is there anything beyond priming that has to be done to make sure car starts ?
@waltpartymiller6802
@waltpartymiller6802 4 жыл бұрын
No priming necessary. Remove cover (10mm socket on extension), vice-grips to clamp incoming fuel line, 17 mm open end wrenches, raised car to slide under, oil pan to catch drips, paper towels, gloves, r&r filter clamp. When you think you are finished, start the engine & watch for drips! Took me two days the first time.

After putting all new injector and fuel hoses in on my ‘75 450SEL on the engine, I started the engine with a rag in the intake! I was wondering why it sounded funny and I quickly remembered and yanked it out! Yikes! (The rag was intended to keep debris out. 🤪)

Synthetic oil for "diesels" Rotella T6 and Mobil 1 Turbo diesel have specific additives to keep soot in suspension. 2nd, Synthetic oil reduces timing chain stretch over conventional oil. It would seem with issues finding a competent Mercedes mechanic synthetic oil is a no brainer. My cousin a, GMI ME head of the Allison heavy transmission division for decades, told me synthetic trans fluid is the ONLY fluid to put in an automatic transmission.

Check for old fuelines a replace with fuel injection grade hoses. Check the hoses under the car by the pumps. I had one spring a leak on a 380se it dumped the entire tank of gas in my friends shop over a weekend. These cars have gravity fed fuel pumps so a leak will dump all the gas. Could have totally torched my friends shop....please check no chinese parts nothing but headaches and premature failures

Ok I think we are getting a little too Scotty Kilmer here! Regarding tire pressure and bulbs and if you have to talk about at least let the less knowledgeable know the the intervals. Why I signed on is for the unknowns. Like how to adjust the altitude on a m130 or even carburetor. Or maybe how to tune a solex or how to actually do anything. I know you are attempting to help but for someone like me you are doing the basics Kent has done these things go way deeper we are watching anyways. I can not be the only one wanting to learn. If I need to learn how to check bulbs and clean windows and or windscreen I’m sure there is place for it. This shouldn’t be it you have the knowledge and experience. I know this because how much you care about manuals and own parts. The views will come if you show and say how you mean it. Experience matters more than all else and what you know that works and that why you have business. Just let your true mechanic heart fly. That’s why we are here Love ya good to see your keeping those hands clean
