Thanks! It was nice to have some time between the hunting and publishing the video to prep some of the finds. Still much to do on improving things all around but slowly getting there. Thanks for watching!

Thanks! Still very much learning with the prep and it's nice when things prep well. Just upgraded my compressor so I'm hoping to do even more when things settle down a bit more at home!

@dinoskool yes mate it's always a bit nice hectic when you have a newborn 😊 was the last compressor a bit underpowered??? Do you us air abrasive to????👍👍⚒️⚒️
@dinoskool
@dinoskool 2 ай бұрын
The last air compressor was turning on every 20 min or so and caused vibrations in the current shed setup I had. Bigger compressor should cut that down (as it turns on less frequently) and allows me to get the abrasive system down the line

@dinoskool Always better to have the compressor cutting in less often especially if you have neighbours close by 🤫 😁 sound deadening too is a good option with a decent extraction system in place 👍👍⚒️⚒️

Thanks! Was nice to get out and Ravenscar is always good for producing a nice diversity of rarer specimens. Was also good to actually have some time to do a bit of prep to better show off the finds before posting the video!

Lovely split on that hilde! Also, I worry that I was the one who was whacking that block you showed at around 9:15. I certainly did not see the bone, just got frustrated that it would not give me any clean splits. Or maybe it is just another big shell block and I am mis-remembering what the one I hit looked like!

I've been lucky with the smaller hildys down at Ravenscar. The big ones less so! There are definitely lots of shelly blocks and it is easy to miss the keels in them let alone bony bits. Hopefully whoever it was will see the next ones!

Are the Pseudolioceras boulbiense from the thouarense zone like the Grammo? I have a P. lythense but I believe that was from the bifrons zone (and from closer to Whitby than Ravenscar).
@dinoskool
@dinoskool 5 ай бұрын
P. boulbiense is apparently the striatulum subzone but that's only exposed at Ravenscar on the Yorkshire coast. You do get them with Grammos and other ammonites though. Andreas's blog has a good bit on the Pseudos from Yorkshire: andysfossils.com/2014/07/31/its-all-in-the-umbilicus-and-in-the-provenance-pseudolioceras/

Awesome video!! How would one best get to ravenscar? I prefer to avoid ticks but does that mean you have to walk around a lot or is there another good way to get to the beach? I’m going on a fossil hunting vacation tomorrow and want to go to the best spots. Port Mulgrave I’ve also got on my list! 😄
@dinoskool

Ravenscar is probably one of the hardest spots to get to due to the height of the cliff. This also protects it from a lot of casual fossiling meaning the finds can be good. At the minute, you can follow the path pretty much straight down to shore where the seals haul out on the headland. From there, cut along the shoreline to get to the main fossil hunting sections thus avoiding the ticks. This route isn't possible in winter as the seals haul out in different areas and have pups in some of the bays you have to cross. It's a tough old time with lots of clambering and slippery rocks there and back as well as then having to get back up the cliff with hopefully a bag of rocks. I would not recommend if you are not fit or experienced with fossiling on this bit of coast as it will not be as rewarding as other beaches will be. Definitely do Port first and see how you find that!

@@dinoskool thanks for the advice and quick response! Really appreciate it! Last year I went fossil hunting as well and indeed went to port Mulgrave. Got some lovely finds there and ended up not going to ravenscar, but this time I’m too curious what I could find there. But will definitely go to port Mulgrave first to get a taste of it again before heading to ravenscar. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure out the route when I get there. The path you mentioned, is that just straight up where you put ravenscar into google maps and then you follow the route down? Or is it more complicated to find the path down to shore? I think I see a path down to south cheek but idk if that’s the right path to take to avoid the ticks Thanks again!

I feel like you must have slipped on one of the rocks at the start of this trip from all your comments about the ‘slippery rocks’ 😂.

I don't think I fell that day. Can't say the same about the previous trip where I was very soggy from landing butt first in the sea 😂

@@dinoskool ha ha, oh dear. Last time I was there (in the winter) the second I stepped off of the muddy grassy slope onto the big beach rocks I went head over heels and would’ve smashed my head if it wasn’t for my back pack!!

Yikes, scary! Glad the backpack saved you from the fall. I've definitely been thankful for my backpack cushioning my fall before, but can't decide if the fall wouldn't have happened without the backpack though
