17:33 I am french from that region (Alsace in french), we have a tight history with Germany being switched a few times from one country to the other throughout history. It is very common here to have german sounding last names and city names like you did notice. We also speak a dialect (alsacien in french, "elsasich" in that dialect) that is very close to the german language, unfortunately that dialect is slowly dying, except in small villages like where I am from and the older generation there is close to no people that still speak it today.

I feel like when new players first start to get the hang of the game, beyond places they already know well, it's often this way. They may click on the wrong side of the planet, but it starts regularly being the right latitude. It's a reminder of how much influence distance from equator etc makes what a landscape looks like.

I only watched 3-4 videos of this guy, but watching this video I realized he just plays alot of geoguesser or whatever this game is called. I'm saying this because all of his guesses that are from slavic countries where easy for me because I'm from Croatia. It's still impressive he guessed slovakia by 60 miles but man this kind of roads I saw every day. SO probably by playing hours upon hours he knows how each country looks more or less.

German signs for speedbumps are red, not blue. Germany does not put the triangles on the speedbumps. The Font on the Sign is not used on signs in Germany but the sign is quite french looking.... So it was from the greater German Area, while not being in Germany. -> Alsace-Lorain is a good guess :)

It's got a fairly large german/german speaking population, thus the very german names, and Tom was humorously implying that the french should give it back to germany as a result.

For those unaware, you can have a simple script that you can run (or a Google Chrome extension, for example - there are a couple that work and are available) which can pick up the longitute and latitude of the place where you are, from the geoguessr code, and search for it on google maps to reveal the exact location for you. He is clearly using this to cheat here :) You can see how he looks every 10 seconds away from the screen as well.

2:35 It is so funny that in the first round you chose Southeast Asia but the answer was Colombia, and in the second round you chose Colombia but the answer was Southeast Asia. im impressed even at your worst guesses.. the latitude is often spot on or just the casual "i think those signposts are in peru" 😂 i can imagine you on vacation taking a selfie with one and your travelling group is like "what the hell, dude" and youre like "well its a classic peruvian signpost, innit? you gotta take a picture"
