The fun continues with our 5th capitals video and I can reveal that just like last week, it is possible to beat me here today, but not by much. So if you're yet to achieve a perfect score in this series, now is your chance! don't give up!
HOW TO PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to KZbin to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!
Play this map: www.geoguessr.com/challenge/c8CZ6PjU75NGsleQ
Good luck everyone, and don't forget to leave me a like :)

An interesting fact about the Zimbabwe guy - Tawanda Kanhema - is that he is actually responsible for the majority of Street View in the country. He funded the trips by himself because he just wanted to make Zimbabwe more representative. :) And here we all are, watching Tom thanks to this guy's effort!

I came here to add this comment but you beat me to it. When I saw it was not just a photosphere I had to Google the guy's name and I'm really impressed! "He helped map 500 miles of Zimbabwe for Google Street View as a volunteer."

Nassau (not the one on the Bahamas) was actually a country once upon a time - it was part of the Holy Roman Empire and existed from the 11th century until 1866. In the later stages the capital was Wiesbaden, today the capital of the german state of Hesse. Members of the house of Nassau rule the Netherlands to this day.

@@chinook6394 How so? It wasn't really a nation-state as we understand them today, sure, but there was a territory of Nassau as part of the Holy Roman Empire. It changed names a couple of times due to the ruling house changing its name because they integrated other houses but the line ruled the changing territory around what is today south-western Hesse and parts of Rhineland-Palatinate until it was annexed by Prussia. It might not fit 100% by a modern definition of a country, but by that standard neither would midieval Prussia or Bavaria.

Back again with another summary of my rounds. Final score of 24,999 even though I consider round 4 a perfect round. So I got a perfect 25,000 in my head. Very proud of this one. So even though we got the same score, I still count that as a win against you!! LOL Round 1: Perfect score, I knew immediately that Nassau was in the Bahamas. I thought perhaps it was a trick and the "Taste of Nassau" restaurant was in a different city, but after searching Nassau I quickly found it on the map. Round 2: Perfect score. I immediately noticed the tablecloth at the shop to the left that says "I love Laos" so I quickly went to Vientiane. It took a few minutes of searching around before I found the hotel on the corner. I also focused on the butcher shop at first, just like you. Round 3: Perfect score. I stupidly searched around the Caribbean looking for the shape of the island on the google car, not even processing that it says "grid PACIFIC". idiot. I eventually went over to the South Pacific and found Tonga based on the island shape. You were right, it was a rewarding way to find it. Took a little scouring of the map to eventually find the right spot. I based it on the buildings, and how there was a little "plaza" where the back building was further off the road. Felt proud that I stuck it out and got this one. Round 4: 4,999*. I knew it had to be somewhere in the Middle East, and searched for Capitals with water areas until I came upon Dushanbe. I took a while to make sure I was in the correct spot, only to be disappointed with what I believe to be an error by the map maker. Based on the parallel of the circular cafe across the lake to the left, and the little squares that stick out on the platform we are standing up, I believe my spot to be correct. The giant flag pole appears to be on the same little jutting out island part, but I believe it to be across the lake to the south, where it is labeled on the map. Oh well, 1 point off regardless. But in my head I am calling this a perfect score. Round 5: Perfect score! OMG I was shocked about this one. I saw across the road the blurry sign where I could just make out the word Zimbabwe at the end. Then it was time to scour the map looking for something with a long name like that sign. I could see a park in the area, and I used the direction of the street to eventually find the building called "The Master of the High Court Zimbabwe". I decided to risk it all and go for it. It's very fun and interesting to me to see the similar, yet different ways that our brains arrive at the same conclusion. Thanks again for a great video.

Finally got my first perfect score 25000 on this map. Get in! Round 1: knew Nassau from the Black sails tv show haha. Round 2 "i love laos". Round 3 loads of fun finding the island based on the shape, to be fair also got it wrong, but less wrong, wohoo. Round 4 : read "Tajikistan" in the bottom corner which felt a bit cheap. Round 5: was amazed that i guessed the same as you from reading Zimbabwe on that sign, and finding the intersection from the park. Great fun.

Oh, I had just about the same place in Tonga as you! I only found it after looking at a few of the island nations, because I didn't know what that flag was lmao. Thank you, (not) Google car for giving away what the island looks like! The final round was a crusher too. I saw the Zimbabwe, but it's just too damn blurry to make the other words out. The building also doesn't show up until you zoom very close. So looking for a similar string of words didn't help. Turns out I was only a few blocks away TT 24,990 and a pleasure as always!

Ended with 24,993, was on a roll until the compass screwed me over in Tajikistan, I guessed near the other promenade you were looking at initially. Ended up losing 5 points in Zimbabwe anyways so I can't be too mad, really thought I found an intersection that matched but like an idiot I assumed the park wasn't showing up and that it had to be a major highway. A bit of a hint for Tonga was "Adiloa Building" across the street to the South, you could barely make out the A and some other letters, but "Building" was very clear and it was on the map. That one saved me since I was stumped as to what that huge building could be if not the Royal Palace.

I owe Tom for pointing me to Tajikistan, but otherwise, hung with him @24,997! Also, as a thru hiker, it has been really fun watching him push some difficult miles on these straight line missions.

24999! Sadly I lost a point in Tajikistan, I clicked where you clicked but a bit further North which sadly didn’t warrant the full points. Got the rest of the locations pretty much spot on though! (Used the shape of the buildings in Tonga) And I didn’t even notice Tajikistan being written until you mentioned it! Keep going with this map, I have to say I enjoy playing it quite a lot!

To be fair, it looks entirely like it that Tajik photosphere has an incorrect geotag. There is a different photosphere on gmaps that has the base of the флагшток in view and it looks nothing like the photosphere in question. I think I agree with Tom here, his place is correct and gmaps is not, the big inconsistency is the flower road that can clearly be visible on the map on the other side

Hello, Tom, linguist here. Script is the correct term as it's more general than alphabet and syllabary. You could also just say "writing system" as the most general term possible. Text and writing are both fine as well but less specific.

At 12:52 you could just see "Adiloa Building" on the mall to the south through the trees which gave it away for me so managed to get a perfect score there. Although there was a red herring as Kosi Ulu is some way to the south of the capital.

Tom you should do a collaboration with France's Bourgeois. I've got no idea what it would involve, but you're both national treasures and I'm sure you could find a way to combine geography with trains and railways.

There is, or was, an engaging French TV series of railway related travelogues by a guy (Philippe Something-or-other I-can't-be-bothered-to-look-up) called "Les trains pas comme les autres". A bit like a French Michael Portillo, but better in my opinion. (And I enjoy Portillo's programmes a lot more than I approved of his politics!)

I can't believe Tom didn't get Nassau for the first one. As he's a Brummie perhaps I shouldn't be surprised he knows nothing about shipping - but Nassau used to be one of the biggest flags of convenience, after Panama and Liberia. I'm surprised he mentioned Iran - the woman in the picture in Dushanbe wasn't covered, so that was impossible. My guess was somewhere in one of the 'stans. I'd have struggled with others though, so really impressed.

I feel you on the ambulance thing. When I first moved to Little Rock I stayed off of W 12th Street and was near the main highway and in a pretty bad part. Besides hearing 20-40 gunshots every night, we had Police and Ambulances fly by on the highway and street about 20-30 times a day on average. Little Rock has some horrible drivers 😂😂

Wow, first time actually playing along and I only lost by 2 points! I have to admit that if the name of the 4th round didn't say Tajikistan I don't think I ever would've gotten it. The Zimbabwe one got me though, gave up too soon on it.
