Really enjoying your channel. I'm surprised at this idea that the British don't like spicy food. As I feel it is the other way around. To me, Japanese food is not spicy at all. Now admittedly I have not tried level 10 Co-Co curry! But all the currys I have had in Japan for the last ten years have been what I would consider mild. And nothing like the level of heat I would get from say a standard British Vindaloo curry, and that's not even mentioning a Phaal. Then again, London is full of soft southerners, so it makes sense that they would serve mild tourist friendly food. 😂

I have never heard about this stereotype regarding the British being unable to handle spice before. They were the first Europeans to make Curry a part of their diets, through Indian possession, with it first appearing on the menu in Georgian times, and on banquet meal lists hosted by Queen Victoria & Prince Albert in the 1840s - in fact, I have always been told they (I'm Australian and British by culture) love it hot more than anyone besides the Indians, London being famous for curry houses, and most British nationals I have interacted with support my perception. I have always learnt that the Japanese were the ones who, though they of course do have spicy curries as part of their diet depending on region, preferred flavour on the mild part of the spectrum, with sweet curries. I I love it on the very hot, myself.
@briochelover11 ай бұрын
As a brit I agree but I will say that a lot of the time spices are dumbed down (like in the video). I can easily eat a curry from an indian takeaway for example, but actually eating a curry at a south asian friends house, or from a more authentic/ expensive restaurant, is a bit different and what I'd actually call spicy

How bizarre, I'm British and have honestly never heard about the rumour of us not liking spicy food. As far as I know, spicy food has been a very popular food here since it was adopted during the British Raj, just like Tea was when we finally descovered China and smuggled the stolen Tea plants to india. Practically every main street here has at least one curry house, and curry is also sold in our fish & chip shops. I don't know what spice levels are but I've experienced everything from barely noticed it to 'oh my god my face is on fire'. As a matter of fact a lot of currys were invented over here or have been altered to be more spicy than normal, like a Vindaloo. We have curry pies, chilli crisps, cheese and chocolate, chilli chocolate is vile by the way. I'd love to go to Japan but our cultures and language are so different we may as well be on different planets, and my British manners would be thoroughly appalled if I unknowingly committed a dreadful faux pas.

Ah I'm from the US and it seems to be a stereotype about white people that they can't handle spicy food because they don't put a lot of seasoning on their food. Here in the US it's mostly a joke made by Hispanic people, because they're food is more heavily spiced, but I suppose over seas it's the Asian people that make those jokes.

@@sunsinger970 Can confirm, I'm white English and my dad used to cook various curry creations of his, along with as mentioned a spicy vindaloo. Again as mentioned above it is apprently not that spicy. It must be some old stereotype, like the American one of our food being bland. Which I believe comes from WWII forgetting that our city's where bombed to shit and rationing was a thing so food was "bland" due to strained resources.
