@@JosephSmithFoundation I LOVED this discussion. I will be getting the encyclopedia you mentioned, studying the scriptures (especially the ones Pres Nelson challenged all us women to study in 2019) to understand more about what I’m calling “divine femininity” (even though how that term is sometimes used isn’t great but basically just our eternal role and spiritual capacity), taking these questions to the temple, and buying your books and trying to find these JS teachings you referred to. You’ve inspired me to really dig into this, Hannah, but it’s something that’s already come up MULTIPLE times in my friend, family and ward circles. It has been on my mind a lot, but especially since just before October conference. It came up in one of our RS lessons I was leading. And I hoped someone at the October conference would speak about it so we could do a whole lesson on it again. Sister Freeman came through, and I just led that discussion the last time we met, and it was so powerful, but I have MORE questions. Anyway, I REALLY appreciate everything you and Greg said here, and I do hope you’ll keep speaking (and maybe writing?) about this! ❤️

Impassioned prayer is so easy to misunderstand and shy away from. I’ve often felt like I’ve done what I thought was right, notwithstanding my imperfections and constant need for forgiveness and purification, and still felt like I wasn’t receiving what I was promised. It’s been in those moments of humble desperation when I ask, “Lord, what lack I yet?” that I’ve felt the most love and seen the most transformation. Elder Bednar counsels to not ask that question lightly, but when we earnestly ask, God answers with love, peace, comfort, and yes, the fulfillment of His promises

God is tutoring me on how to hear Him better and how to act on his promptings. I have felt impressed also that we as the Church are still asleep, as much as has been accomplished, I don't believe we're awake to the covenants that we've made with God, and how we have a literal identity that connects to these covenants that are ancient. We haven't yet awakened to the literal aspect of these covenants and related prophecies.

I couldn't agree more with those who praise Hannah Stoddard's defense of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., and I'll add to that her tireless work to expose and proclaim the truth of all things, from the manner in which the Book of Mormon was translated (Urim and Thummim), to the sanctity of plural marriage (sacred and of God, when done in righteousness), to exposing the enemies of the Lord Jesus Christ and His church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the sanctified prophets Joseph Smith, Jr., Brigham Young, Joseph F. Smith, Joseph Fielding Smith, and Ezra Taft Benson, and the rest, as well as the ancient prophets Nephi, Mormon, Moroni, and the rest, and The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints, and all of us who follow God Almighty. If one actually uses their God-given intellect, using logic and reason, and some basic discernment, it's amazing how easy it is to see the truthfulness and righteousness of what Hannah Stoddard and the Joseph Smith Foundation are doing, and on the other hand, the awful wickedness and abominations inherent in evil attempts to lead astray the Lord's people, including the vain effort to deny the sanctity of plural marriage, to deny the historicity of the Book of Mormon, to paint the Prophet of the Restoration, Joseph Smith, Jr. as something less than the greatest prophet of the Lord, and second only to Jesus Christ Himself, in how much was done for the salvation of mankind, among dozens of other efforts. I stand solidly with Hannah Stoddard in all that she does that is lovely, or of good report, or praiseworthy. So far, I have yet to see any fruits of her labors which aren't positively enlightening, uplifting, and praiseworthy, and I sincerely thank Greg Matsen and CWIC Media for giving Hannah Stoddard yet another platform upon which to testify the truth of all things upon which she expounds.

It is impossible to really understand the character of Christ without obtaining the character of Christ. God gives us commands, and through these commands we become like Him, and then when we have become like Him, we truly understand Him. These commands are in the scriptures only in their general form. They are personalized and particularized through the Holy Ghost. As we receive the Holy Ghost, we grow from grace to grace until we become like Christ, who then leads us to the Father.

I truly don’t understand how people can say they understand Joseph Smith to the core, and accuse him of lying to his wife, hypocritically excommunicating people for what he was secretly doing, and lying to the members of the church where he publicly denounced polygamy, spiritual wives or any other crazy way they have of explaining having more than one wife (which the Lord says is a whoredom and abomination to Him in Jacob 2:24) but secretly practicing it. (I know many people say vs. 30 of Jacob 2 provides a loophole, where sometimes the Lord commands His people to practice whoredoms and abominations, but for those who so believe this, I invite you to read 3 Nephi 12:27-30 and do a word correlation with ‘these things’.) In the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants section 101 and 1844 Doctrine and Covenants section 109, Joseph included a statement on Marriage. This section says “…Inasmuch as this church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication, and polygamy: we declare that we believe, that one man should have one wife, and one woman, but one husband, except in case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again.” If you know Joseph to the core, and revere him as a prophet of God, how can you ignore his teachings on some subjects such as polygamy? Actually how could you not only ignore his teachings, but publicly accuse him practicing whoredoms and abominations? I think it is time for those who believe Joseph was a prophet of God to actually listen to the words he taught consistently and with fervor. It is sad that so many who claim to ‘know Joseph to the core’ are the same ones who accuse him “with all manner of false accusations” as Christ told him would happen in D&C 122.

Your belief about polygamy could develop into a wedge that others use to drive you away from the Church. If one assumes Brigham Young and others created a polygamy story and framed Joseph as a polygamist, they have to assume that the leadership of the Church from that time down has lied and covered it up which would make them false prophets and the Church has been led by these imposters since that time. I'd be very careful with the slippery slope beliefs about polygamy not being practiced and taught by Joseph.

We aren't or shouldn't be pharisees who had Christ right in front of them but revered the temple more than Him at the same time Christ was Himself walking the path through the temple that the temple shows us He would do. The temple (the place) is important because it allows us to do the things we have seen Him do. (2 Ne 31) That's why we see the temple in everything because it's all about Christ! The temple is the roadmap of Christs covenant path which describes and leads us through the same altars and sacri fices of all things that Christ experienced. Christ is the temple and from the top of that holy mount beckons us to come, follow Him on and through the same path He took.

I think the lack of push to read or study Joseph Smiths teachings in the Church in overall culture is likely due to human nature following to be told what to do and study. We dont hear bretheren focusing on his teachings directly but the Book of Mormon or following studying Come Folow Me, and maybe we dont dive in independently until bretheren start saying to do it ir bring it up. The last 4 years institutionally we hear many topics but not directly a deep dive into Joseph Smith's teachings overtly but weve seen more about how to get testimony of Jesus Christ, to hear him, think Celestial, temples, obedience, personal witness, etc which we just listen, try and focus a bit on, apply to our lives, and nod and then move on to whats next. Perhaps when the bretheren bring up to go study his teachings then like sheep you'll see human nature go there. Perhaps we dont dig deep enough independently personally outside of what is being said now institutionally from the bretheren. I know the bretheren of course would want us all to study his teachings but unless in a Conference for example, brings it up explicitly we tend to not dig indepently to do that unless an experience sparks that dive. That's why podcasts do help bring out good points that also help us realize we have a lot to study in church history. Maybe every 4 years it will peak interest and we will dive in. There's so much to learn both as the institution presents currently and also our personal responsibility to take ourselves on an independent, deep dive focus.

I felt a number of things I haven't experienced in awhile. Her description of Joseph's description of Hell is what I've long felt to be the case. A real disappointment and deep regret. Wailing and gnashing of teeth from self-inflicted misery. I love the description of the need to practice the gospel, not just study it. I'm having a hard time with the parable of the lost sheep as explained here. Really? 99 wicked sheep searching for a lost one? How many lesson manuals over the decades have explained it as US going out to find the lost sheep?

Does anyone know where we can get a hardcopy of the JST Bible, not just the KJV with added footnotes?

If not available, you could go back to Community of Christ book source, Herald Books if it's still in print.

The church is in the process of transcribing the full JST right now. We recently acquired the copywrite and original JST papers from the Community of Christ purchase. Right now, we only have about 1/3 of the original Joseph Smith Translations.

How did Joseph get into the "whole polygamy" Hannah? Where are the polygamy teachings of Joseph Smith? I haven't found any yet. The only one is 132 which was held up by Brigham in 1851. 132 contradicts the Old Testament, the Book of Mormon, the New Testament, and the Doctrine and Covenants. I am being sincere in my question. I truly want to know. I want someone to set me straight if I am on the wrong path.

Jake, why aren’t you honest here? You use to be a follower of Phil Davis and you regularly post in the Great Apostameme Grouo which is an apostate group where you make meme making fun of President Nelson and Temple Ordinances. Of course you reject the ordained leadership of Brigham Young and Temple ordinances.

It doesn't contradict the Bible. 2 Samuel 12:8 "And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such" This is the Lord talking to David. Notice that the Lord authorized the giving of Saul's wives to David. More on authorized polygamy in the Old Testament: Deuteronomy 21:15-17. 15 If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated: 16 Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: 17 But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

@@cameronreed1411by that standard we must also say God is in favor of sex slavery. Let’s look at the previous verses in Deuteronomy that you quoted: Deuteronomy - Inspired Version 21:11 And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife, 21:12 Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house; and she shall shave her head and pare her nails; 21:13 And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month; and after that, thou shalt go in unto her and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. 21:14 And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money; thou shalt not make merchandise of her because thou hast humbled her. To me it comes down to the nature of God. Does he care so little for his daughters that he WANTS his daughters to be treated this way? I’ve learned from the Lord that he takes us where we are, and the circumstances we are in and helps us be better. He usually doesn’t change our circumstances or environment, but when we approach Him humbly in prayer He will teach us His will. When we know the nature of God, we know He doesn’t want any of his children to be miserable and treated badly. We find the Lord’s standard on marriage in 3 Nephi: 27 Behold, it is written by them of old time, that thou shalt not commit adultery; 28 But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman, to lust after her, hath committed adultery already in his heart. 29 Behold, I give unto you a commandment, that ye suffer none of these things to enter into your heart; 30 For it is better that ye should deny yourselves of these things, wherein ye will take up your cross, than that ye should be cast into hell We also have his standard in this dispensation. Doctrine and Covenants 63: 16 And verily I say unto you, as I have said before, he that looketh on a woman to lust after her, or if any shall commit adultery in their hearts, they shall not have the Spirit, but shall deny the faith and shall fear. I don’t have all the answers but I know God loves His daughters as He does His sons.

Prophets in the old and new testament had plural wives. Even King David did not lose favor with the Lord until he started having other wives not for the right reason which is to raise a kingdom unto God. And then his choice to have a person die in order to hide things.

Dear brother Madsen, I think I know what you were trying to express with your depiction of Joseph’s prayer in Liberty Jail, but I have always sensed a sincere humble plea to the Lord at that time, not a “standing up almost yelling” questioning. That’s just me.
