Precisely, this country is uniquely blessed with a large population of highly skilled engineers with an amazing core competency at putting massive metal structures out at sea. There is a direct link between offshore oil and gas and offshore wind, including much of the installation machinery, specialised ships etc.

This is such a unique show - it deserves a huge audience, not just in the UK, as I don't know of anyone else doing this. It's great to see all that oil rig / extraction technology being reused in wind farms. You can see the ships and blades being manufactured and assembled if you go to shipyards like Harland & Wolff, Belfast. It's been a lifeline for that industry, so why are we still subsidising fossil fuels?? The only thing that is omitted in the talk was the old-fashioned nature of the turbine design itself and the high degree of maintenance those big gearboxes can require. Newer vortex-style generators can be stacked closer together and easier to maintain. Maybe Robert can do a show about the newer designs, hint hint?
@johnburns40177 жыл бұрын
When turbines are close to each other, access gantries can be between them.
@ahaveland7 жыл бұрын
John Burns How on earth can turbines be "close to each other" with such long blades? Plus they also have to be hundreds of metres apart because of turbulence and vortices that can put undue stress on downwind blades.

chris6770 "This show....deserves a huge audience, not just the UK"? Uuhhh Righto, you mean like putting it on KZbin or something maybe?
@robertbidochon79497 жыл бұрын
+chris6770 You mean direct driven wind turbines ? Like Enercon and Siemens does? Indeed, the maintenance is low and the working times of the wind turbine is higher; but the cost to build is higher. This part is left to the client's discretion.

All of that travel was on electricity. The walk across Green Park to Piccadilly was me. And the train journey was diesel-electric. So we really are into an age of electric transport now and more energy generation from solar, wind and wave will pave the wave to much better energy efficiency. My Merc 350E goes pretty fast on electric only mode. The acceleration through the 7-speed gearbox is impressive.

Just watched your video talking to Rory Reid, from 2010!! Would be great to revisit that in light of all the changes, growth of Tesla etc. I'm sure much of the discussion would be remarkably similar but it would also reflect how much has developed. The discussion about phones and laptops is also one of perception - batteries have got better but we are unwilling to carry the weight anymore - you could have an phone or laptop with a battery the same size as previous generations and it would run for two days but we value the lightness more.

32 wind machines producing 256 MW of electricity. We, in Czech republic have a peak wind production of 263 MW in total! Instead the government supports more coal power plants :(. I know, we don't have offshore wind capacity, but 263 is just a lot of unused potential.
@fullychargedshow7 жыл бұрын
It is very sad, I am aware of the situation in Czech republic and Poland. The UK has 19.5 GW of wind capacity and it's growing very fast, it does work, the intermittency is overblown to a ridiculous extent, it is cheaper than coal and will continue to get cheaper. It would genuinely help the Czech economy to use more wind and solar.
@dominikvit27 жыл бұрын
Our government stopped giving incentives on wind in 2013 (don't ask me why) and since then, there has been not a single turbine constructed. There has been a period of massive government support for solar, when we constructed many farms and the total capacity rose up to 2 GW (peak production). We then produce 3 GW from nuclear and 4 GW from coal. Sad, but still better than 16 GW from coal in Poland!
@TheSadButMadLad7 жыл бұрын
@fullychargedshow - at least you admit intermittency exists. It is a problem unless you can get the public and industry to do nothing on calm days. Unless there was a backup like nuclear and gas.

I would agree with the first fact. Second fact about Tesla, lets do the maths. 258 MW means 258,000 KW which lets say powering for whole year of 8760 hours would give 2,260,080,000 KWh. That means a 85 KWh tesla will be charged for 26,589,176 times. That is still a lot but way smaller than 8 billion number. How was that calculation made?

Sorry for the terse list of questions but these ones always come to the front of my mind when I see things about wind power and I've not seen answers (perhaps it doesn't matter because they are so very productive and starting from scratch in 25 years is justified)

How many Teslas, i assume he said 8 million and not the 8 billion i heard? (for that 32 turbine array of 8MW machines, assuming they run at the Uks average capacity factor (32.7%) for a whole year that's 0.733 GWhrs (8*0.327*32*8760) and a typical tesla has an 85kWHr battery, so each year, that farm can charge a total of 8.83 million teslas (ignoring AC transmission losses (10%) and DC charging loses (~5%))
