Browning, it's not acceptable in 2024 to just say "Stainless Steel" In my opinion.

OKAY, this was chock-full of budget blades, I'm impressed. When you mentioned "Saturday we'll discuss budget knives" in the New Knives video earlier this week, I thought there was going to be a big budget knife question in the Q&A video -- I had no idea you'd be doing an extra New Knives video just for budget blades. I withdraw any criticism from earlier this week (& instead simply critique how today's video was publicized). Bravo, Knifecenter crew, bravo.

Nice to see a more affordable version of the Kizer Cormorant. It's really hard to see Nitro V as a huge step down in materials from 154CM. It just depends on what you're after.

It's definetly a good time to get a budget knife, quality is there and with good material as well (D2, 14C28N, G10, etc). What i don't really like is when they replace 14C28N with nitro-v. It's pretty close, but with not that much stainlessness. Really like watching your stuff, hope you'll bring back your old format for saturdays.
@bornonthebattlefront48832 ай бұрын
Nitro V is equally stainless while losing a touch of toughness to get a touch of extra edge retention But it’s like a loss of 5% to gain 5% Very marginal

24:26 - stonewashed finish is incredibly popular these days. And the reasons given here are the ones usually usually cited. It's not exactly wrong, but people sometimes forget the flipside: while you don't get small scratches showing up as easily, did you get shiny contrast marks close to the edge from cutting through harder materials. It's also not as resistant to rust as a satin, mirror polish, or even bead blasted finish. I prefer satin as a happy medium, but it seems challenging to find newer designs I like in this. And yes I know I can polish out a stonewash.

I have been searching the answers to 2 questions without satisfaction. You folks are in the business and should have answers! Toughness and hardness seem to be at odds with each other. Soft metal won't chip, but dulls faster. I can easily sharpen a knife. Who can fix a chipped blade? Not me. What alloys should I look for to avoid chipping? I have never had any problems with corrosion. The other question is why choose a wide blade over one that fits inside the handle when folded?
@redlion1452 ай бұрын
As to your last question, it's simply a matter of application. For opening a package pretty much any blade shape will work, but for skinning a deer, or woodcrafting, or any number of other tasks, sometimes a more specialized shape is called for. For example, while you might want a large belly on the blade of a folding skinning knife, you still want a nimble handle shape because of the intended application, so you end up with part of the blade sticking out when folded. Style can also come into it, many design choices on modern knives are made for style rather than functionality.

For the KniFAQ: I'm a cabinet maker by trade and carry work knives all day everyday. I carry a Mora Kniv Pro w/carbon steel, a OLFA utility knife and a Civivi Elementum as a 'backup' knife. My question is what other knife than the Elementum would you recommend? I would like a knife that complement the other knives. Folder or fixed blade. If folder I want a one handed opening and closing. Where I live I can carry almost any type knife if it's for work, but no autos. Budget is $100, but if it's a nice knife I can spend a bit more.
@Sanguivore2 ай бұрын
You might really like the Qubit, also by CIVIVI. Button-lock, nice blade shape, smooth action, same steel, aluminum scales. Mine is super duper sharp and just glides through whatever I put it through. I recommend going to a nearby Walmart and handling a few first though, 'cos on some of them the button-lock can hangup a bit. I've also been eyeing the Kizer HIC-CUP, which I believe is currently on-sale.

Hey DCA and Crew. Great channel, it's cost me a fair bit of $$ with no regrets. Well done. My daughter is heading off to Uni in a couple of weeks and I would like to get her a couple of knives for kitchen use. Something decent that will last but not crazy pricey, preferably under $150 US for both. I'm thinking a paring size knife and a larger versatile chopper/slicer. She is no stranger to the knife world thanks to me and has her own little collection (mora, vagabond, old hickory hunter and more+) so something a little unique would be cool. She's a nature girl so maybe something that would also feel at home in a camp kitchen. Thanks! p.s. I'm in Toronto, Canada, hopefully I can do a cross border order or find it here somewhere...

Nobody can tell any difference between 14c28n and something like s30v in real life anyways. Those ruikes look sweet. That 8cr has the geometry to outperform many knives with super steels also.
