New mechanics normally get their first job out of school at a dealership. The lowest guy is the guy that doing the oil changes and tire rotations. Likely the guy working for a while at an independent shop has way more experience than the guy right out of school changing your oil and rotating your tires.

Have worked at multiple dealerships and have seen wheels not torqued on and wheels falling off vehicles. I have a young kid in the bodyshop now doing wheels and I see he uses torque wrench all the time. Nice sight to see!!

So, here’s the deal. We want the VIM Cans (6 pack) to store our Mixed drinks during work inconspicuously and the QC tends to go to “hell in a hand basket” later in the day as we empty the VIM Cans!!! Make early morning appointment for your safety. Peace

Ppl want them just because they look cool and are a dope display item. It's just like stickers. You guys should expand into toolbox decor/display too. It's a market that is almost non existent, but tons of guys deck their box out in some type of stickers or displays, and there just isn't a lot out there to fill that void.

Edit for tldr i just wanted to add this to clarify, QC really depends shop to shop and doesn't matter if it's a dealership or an independent shop. I've seen great and terrible dealerships and great and terrible independent shops. It really comes down to the techs working there, the environment and training they have. ----------------------------------------- As a mechanic I've learned you really can't just judge a shop by if it's independent or dealership. There are two Ford dealerships in my area and i work at an independent shop and sometimes repairs are outside our wheel house so we have to send it to a dealership and we always send it to the further one because the service and quality are so much better. Same brand two dealerships not too far apart but radically different and different in the type of repairs they do well or bad. At my independent shop we are pretty good at suspension, brakes, engine work, but we really aren't so good at electrical diagnostics and we commonly send those to the dealer since none of our guys really are trained and practiced in tracking down shorts and parasitic draws and those kind of issues. Meanwhile there's some independent shops that have top tier diagnostics and electrical but aren't so good at engine or trans work. It mostly comes down to who's actually doing the work and their capabilities, the actual techs. I highly recommend read reviews and honestly talk with the service advisor. Don't just ask " do you do electrical diagnostics" because the service writer will probably say yes and try to get you in. Id ask "hey how long has your electrical diagnostic guy been doing electrical work?" And they might say "well we don't have a dedicated electrical guy but several of our techs dabble in it" which if you read between the lines that means "we don't have a guy for that. We can probably handle some basic issues but anything beyond the obvious we can't fix". Or ""yeah he's being doing it for about a year or two" basically means "we are training him or he's self teaching. He knows enough to handle some general electrical but he's probably not seen a lot of curve balls or really difficult things" 3-5 years id say he's seen a lot and pretty good but still might get stumped time to time especially on new or really old stuff. Anything 5+ Years in a specialty i would consider him very adequate to tackle just about anything in that field. You can even ask this and the lube tech, it's ok if he's brand new but just request something like "i want a note of what he torqued the lug nuts on each tire too" or something like that or buy a 20 dollar Pittsburgh torque wrench and Pittsburgh impact sockets for 20 bucks and if you find ones loose before you drive off go get the service manager make a little fuss and you can get a little discount hopefully. Sorry if this was a little long but I hope this helps somebody.

The collectible can would be a great idea and make the bottom screw off for security purposes ....lol The QC of work at a smaller shop is alot more controlled cause they want you to return and spend some cash with them . SOme shops work on word of mouth for business so quality of work is very important . I have worked for Dealerships (Chevrolet multiple times ) and they all operate the same and charge way too much for labor cause they have such a higher overhead ... With you guys being who you are (VIM) shit like that should NEVER HAPPEN and there are probably 100 shops in the area who would want your business and would give you a big discount for all of your business ... IE all of your emplyees bringing there vehicles to them for repair and general service .

This is the reason why only I touch my cars. The ONE time i had someone else do an alignment on one of my cars, they left the camber adjusting bolt on the strut loose. Also Personally, i don't care if i only need that one size once every 10 years, it had better be there when i need it. No Skips Gang Lastly, You know how Rock Auto gives a magnet with a different car for each order? We dont /need/ the magnets but we put them on the beer fridge anyway. This is why im sure most would want the cans. Nick nacks for the garage or tool box.

Anything warranty related, I would see what my options for having an independent shop do a repair with payment from warranty company if possible. Most good mechanics have left the dealerships for many reasons. Therefore, I have been noticing a trend of dealerships hiring inexperienced techs n trying to teach them through mentorship, classes n certification. But, alot of the training seems to be half assed. I've personally seen at least 3 unqualified "techs" that are either at or just left the dealership position and have almost no experience or understanding of what they are doing. As well, they start with limited tools and resources for expanding.

Ive owned a independent shop and I managed a dealer service department it is really on a case by case bases what quality techs you are getting, some independent shops make dealerships look like a high school shop class and I have seen dealerships run so professionally and the bonus of the dealer is they have the tools some techs can not get but now most independent shops can get almost all the computers and tools the dealers can with exception to the most highest end vehicles that require a connection to the mothership and you cannot do any electrical or updates with out the connection to the manufacturer. If you want a good mechanic find one and stick with them. but just do your homework do not blindly trust.

Need to have more options for blow mold case instead of the foam. A lot of us do mobile work and the foam isn’t the best thing for transporting your tools on the go.And a lot of us don't have enough room in our tool boxes to keep it in the foam and we end up throwing it away. I have issues with the dealership, they didn't put back the aero shield when changing oil. Dealer was supposed to change the gas tank forgot to tighten the gas pipe so fuel was leaking in the gas station. Changing oil myself has solved the oil problem. I have a mechanic friend who has a shop and he knows what he is doing to the extent that doesn't mind me watching him do the job. When u take ur car truck and they won't let u watch, don't go back to them. That's my advice.

There's several reasons, non involving lack of knowledge, skill, etc..., as to why I will not allow you to be in my work area. #1-i don't care, you will be a distraction. Either in the way, too many questions, or just that I have to keep an eye on something other than my job. 2- I don't trust you, I have had many tools stolen, by co workers, friends and friends who borrow with no intent on returning. 3- SAFETY RISK AND INSURANCE RISK. IF SOMETHING DID HAPPEN, COULD MY INSURANCE REFUSE TO PAY BECAUSE I BROKE PROCEDURES? SORRY, I MAY LIKE YOU, EVEN ALOT, BUT AT MY JOB YOU'RE A CUSTOMER. OR NOT, YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO GO ELSEWHERE.

I had my first oil change/tire rotation on my 2012 Dodge Charger R/T done at the dealership since it was included in the sale. I picked it up and was driving to work on the highway doing about 75 and heard noise. I pulled over and all 20 lug nuts were loose. They forgot to tighten 20 lug nuts. I turned around drove back and lost my mind on them. The owner called me and i told gim i would never be back. He gave me his personal cell and told me to call him if i wanted to buy a new car. A few years later i bought a Durango and he gave it to me at cost. He made a bad situation right but still could have been disastrous.

Personally i like going to indy shops that specializes in one make. Most of those guys are dealer trained and got a couple years under their belt before either starting their own shop or starts working at one. Also since it's specialized the techs tend to be very experienced with your car and have all specialized tools for the job.

Mistakes happen in every line of work. A mistake doesn’t discredit any shop. How the shop handles an issue is most important. I will say that at a majority of shops, the lower skilled personnel are doing the wheel rotations, lube jobs and brake jobs. Don’t forget there’s humans on the other side that can make mistakes just like you.

Technician’s are getting lazier sad to say/see, my own dealer is the best in the city & surrounding and yet the ethic within some express Technicians is just absent, there’s good apples of course but the overall mindset in some is go go go (skipping steps) rather than step step step (by the book procedure). saved my neck & got me promoted to apprentice after 1 solid year, it’s all within the techs

Just want to point out as a guy from the rust belt that has been doing this for many years. If the wheel is loose as soon as it leaves the shop yes that is without a doubt the shops fault. But if the wheel comes loose many miles down the road wheel can come loose for other reasons corrosion previously overtightened lugnuts ect. At my shop we torque all lugnuts to spec and tell all customers to come back in 50-100 miles to have wheels re torqued for this reason. We also clean any loose corrosion off the wheels and hub. Even being as careful as we are maybe once or twice a year we still have the dreaded comeback of a wheel that came loose. I would say 95 percent of the comebacks we have ever had are Chrysler products. I do not believe there is any way to prevent this from ever happening no matter how good you are I aslo believe that any tech that has been in this work for many years and claims to have never lost a wheel is either full of crap or just extremely lucky. I would advise all of you to set your ego down admit that it happens and educate people on the importance of retorquing after repair. Especially with the junk chrome capped lugnuts and alloy wheels.

Dealerships just make the customer feel better because they think everyone there knows what they are doing. There are really good dealership techs but the person doing your mpvi, lof and rotation generally is the lowest paid and least experienced tech.. independent shops usually are different at least in the fact the guy looking at your car is experienced and double checking the work the apprentice does.

It was missing two lug nuts. I also cringe when i see techs go full ugga dugga when putting lug nuts on, nor do they torque😢😢😢

At a dealership you get paid on flag rate so the faster you work the more you make and guess what, that’s where mistakes are made. Also the quality of the new techs that come into this dealer jog are not the best because the best have figured out that if they leave the dealer they will make more money and work better if they work by hour and not by a low pay flag rate.
