It shouldn't be legal to subject your children to having their private moments viewed by the entire internet. I believe it's detrimental to their growing sense of self and their place in the world. Specific videos, where it relevant to have a child in the video is one thing, (I saw a video of a Nana telling a story to her grandchildren, and put it up for other kids), but broadcasting a child's life is something else.

Sideshow guy here. I have been performing professionally for about 15 years. For those curious the trick that Kevin didn't go into detail on was performed by Matt "The Tube" Crowley. It involved pumping his stomach and then having someone drink it. I think when I saw it, another performer drank it, not an audience member, but its still as nasty as it sounds. The condom challenge is very stupid and shouldn't be taken lightly, how you learn sideshow acts is by finding a professional performer and bribing them, NOT by copying some kid on the internet. The act is a variation on Mental Flossing, which has been performed by sideshow acts far longer than the 1990s. And that act is based on a yogic cleansing ritual that has been around for hundreds (thousands?) of years. The danger is the real risk of not being able to retrieve the condom once it gets to your throat, this could easily cause someone to choke/suffocate. It also puts a lot of wear and tear on a very delicate part of the nasal cavity. I injured myself once doing a similar act and the result was a terrible nose bleed followed by non-stop coughing for about three days. The coughing was so bad that I couldn't sleep and so annoying to everyone around me that the woman I was dating at the time got fed up and stopped seeing me. So yeah.. wouldn't recommend this.. or any sideshow stunts for that matter.

A datapoint in the failure of Jackie Coogan's law is Wil Wheaton. His parents stole pretty much all the salary he earned as Wesley in ST:TNG. On reaching adulthood he had no money at all; the only way he kept his family solvent was through the residuals. Which were OK, but not much compared to how much he had earned while working on the show. When it comes to family vlogs, I think there are two types: Vlogs about someone's life that incidentally includes their family because, hey, it's their life and the family is around, and the abusive kind you're talking about here. A reasonably wholesome example of the former is Curiosity Incorporated, chronicling the days of a dealer in collectibles as he finds things to sell and... then sells them. It includes his family a lot because he works from home and often has his kids along on buying trips and so on, but it's his work that's the focus and not the kids.

29:00 The law in question is the California Child Actor's Bill, or the Jackie Coogan Law, established in California in 1939. "This law acts as a safeguard against the mismanagement of a child’s earnings by their parents or guardians. It is named after the famed child actor Jackie Coogan, who starred in Charlie Chaplin’s famed “The Kid” movie, and later in “Our Gang” and “The Little Rascals” series" "It required that a child actor's employer set aside 15% of the earnings in a trust (called a Coogan account) and specified the actor's schooling, work hours, and time off." -Wikipedia Coogan was one of the first stars to be heavily merchandised. In his adult life, Coogan went on to star as Uncle Fester in the mid-1960s TV show, The Addams Family. I'd recommend him for the BioGraphics channel, but you don't seem to be involved anymore.

One KZbinr I can always listen to before bed, actually reads Reddit posts xD Tho he at least does add content to it where he either makes a dumb joke about the post, or actually gives his honest opinion, or the best being: playing Bingo 😂

I've actually had my reddit post read for a few videos on KZbin. Catch is, I'm an amateur writer, I post fiction in the HFY subreddit and every time they have posted my short stories, they have politely asked first and always credit my reddit name. I'm fine with it, if it means someone can appreciate my work, I will allow it most of the time FYI, it's Net Narrator who's read my stories online

There are so many reasons not to watch most family channels. I watch some family blogs where the kids might be seen playing in the background or mentioned but their faces never appear because they’re not old enough to give consent. One trend in this trend that I loathe and despise and another driving reason behind needed more regulatory oversight for children in media are the children who aren’t consenting at all or are actively not consenting but still being put in footage. One YTer I know who used to read fan mail got so many fan mails from teenage girls, many too young to have any means of income, asking for advice on how to get their parent or older sibling (usually in a prank channel) to stop using them in their online content. Keep in mind, this problem predated the massive trend on TT and YT in the last 5-7 years. We’re talking OG mommybloggers… of the early 00s too… said YTer started sending sweatshirts that said “I do not consent to being filmed” so they could ruin footage. The idea was given by someone in the livestream who’d gotten the same thing for herself as soon as she could get a job at age 15. I have mad respect for the “how I handle X” or “day in the life” female vloggers who do it without including their kids. They may still talk about the importance of nap time or how they clean up the play space or handle mealtimes… but they don’t hardly ever show a child & if they do, its the back of a head. And for the few channels I watch, usually art channels, that sometimes include their kids… it’s done so only with consent of the child, no real names are used, & it’s always fun like “do you want to do art with daddy?” & then daddy might then make kiddo’s art come to life in 3D animation… or “do you want to help mommy pick what her next art project should be” and all you see are little toddler hands choosing between two choices… not so different from the bygone trend of “my pet picks my makeup/next read/next adventure”

A big target audience for those "voice reading Reddit posts" videos is people like me who work boring repetitive office jobs and need something, anything to listen to to keep us from going insane.

Wait, no true crime and make up channels? Don’t get me wrong, I love true crime content as much as the next gal, but listening to a story about a serial killer brutally dismembering 85 victims while the person talking is contouring their face just feels icky and almost disrespectful 🤷🏼

As someone who had a story featured in a reddit reading channels video, a lot of the times they do ask for permission to use the stories. At least the one who featured one of my stories did. (I was in a video on the channel Hellfreezer about 2 or 3 years ago because of a story I posted on Tales From The Front Desk)

The only family type content I watch is a mom that gives parenting advice and does comedy shorts reenacting the things her toddlers do. Her teen is also in the content on occasion but only when she wants to be, the littles never show up in person because they are not old enough to consent to being online.
