A buddy of mine got a "good deal" on a privacy fence. $6,000. They've been out to fix it 4-5 times now and it still looks worse than most diy projects.

It is a problem that is only going to get worse unfortuantely. But I think things are starting to change for the better. This step with speedmaster is huge! It's a step in the right direction.

I fully agree with everything you've said. My only issue is the total cost to participate in this hobby. Having 4 kids, still having a great paying career, but I still can't afford to build my own car. Without paying anyone else to fab or work on my projects it's still a stretch to afford. This hobby has become so out of reach for most people. There's a reason you only see gray hairs driving hot rods these days..

If you look back at the quality of the builds we did 20 years ago cars were much less fancy show car kind of builds I think we should build what we can afford because everything doesn’t have to be a magazine car and frankly they aren’t that much fun to own

Im not sure if its just my area but local business makes it difficult to support local business. I expect and dont mind spending a bit more locally but i can't and wont pay 700% mark up. My local mower/ hardware store charged me almost $100 for a deck spindle and had to order it. It broke before MY CUSTOMER finished mowing their lawn. I looked it up online and bought the exact same spindle for $14. Theyre a Milwaukee dealer but qll the boxes and displays are covered in dust. Why? Because their prices are 5× the price of home depot.

We live in the age of instant gratification, people are not willing to save up enough money to buy great parts. I still have parts left over from the 80’s that still work great. Manufacturers that build overseas are not interested in your satisfaction, only they have your money in there hand. The parts I have were damn expensive, and required sacrifice to purchase but other generations of people have to have it now, even if it’s JUNK!

I feel the same way about the transmission I purchased from some high end mopar mega torque trans with a gear vendor under/overdrive out of Canada that I spent 12000$ and didn’t get 16 miles out of and twisted the entire main shaft and the manufacturer told me it was my converter so I put my old trans and converter to prove it to no be the converter and spent another 2 grand and rebuilt it myself instead of paying duty’s and shipping fees to still have Rubish

The reason that these old brands don't care about name and heritage is because they are being bought up by private equity. Holley is a good example of this but far from the only one. Outside of Marketing and IP, these corporations have no connection or concern for the name. Though it costs a lot more, buying from the small companies that specialize in specific parts is the key to getting good parts and service. I could have saved a ton with my last swap buying a generic harness. I went with BP automotive because I don't like tracing issues. The money spent on the front end is saved over the life of the part. I'll buy some inexpensive parts but fuel system, wiring, and boost regulation are areas where a minor failure can do major damage.

Decided to completely rebuild my 93 Silverado apposed to buying a new truck. Invested around $10,000 for New radiator Frt End Engine trans seals to all wheel seals and bearings. When I got to electronic computer sensors, tps etc. I had to literally dig my old Delco parts out of the trash after 3 different foreign made trash sensors were installed. Cheap Parts are Cheap. It is not a problem with made in America but a problem with the fact that nobody wants to make parts in America. Just a cog in the wheel of a product made in America but I am a part of that. It is more about the money than it is about the pride. But how can I be about the pride when I am trying to provide for my family and being just a cog in the wheel isn't paying the bills. It gets tricky. I am very particular at work when those around me are not. Very frustrating. I know where you're from and this is not your gig but think you get it.
