More Planting Space || All A Gardener Could Wish For!

This is a video I was really delighted to be making as it’s all about creating more flowerbed space, which is all any gardener could wish for! After quite a bit of persuasion on my part, I managed to convince Richard that all that lawn space was totally unnecessary and it would be an excellent idea to take away another section of turf to create a whole new, rather large, flowerbed. And here we show you how easy it was to do this. As I mention, we used flexible steel edging which we ordered online from a wonderful company called www.theidealgarden.com and I ordered it one day and it arrived the next. Extremely easy to use as well. The whole project only took one morning and now I can get on with the exciting part - planting. Janette I love your determination to get on get the job done, it is contagious. The sun's been out all weekend, now I have my new fence and gate. The patio has taken on a new improved shape and path to garden shed / summer house had a make over. I'm over the moon. Standing holding the spirit level in the freezing temps has been worth it, 5 trips to the tip, it is always good to get rid of the junk. Why don't you get some fruit trees? Plants that feed are the way forward, maybe a cherry tree or something? Less grass=less mowing makes sense to me. 🙂 Don't you have a compost bin???? Turn that turf upside down in a pile by spring it'll be great compost. I liked the strategic placing of the facebook logo on the dog lol I'm getting excited to see what you plant in there all the best Steve

Fantastic idea, I also want to create a border but my garden is of a newbuid house. I had a go at digging but the turf has rigid netting underneath as well as very hard soil/broken bricks. Do I need to replace the soil ? and if so will it be all purpose top soil. I read a lot about acid/clay etc I confused ...thanks.

Hi there, I envy you in a way as you will be able to design everything from scratch. I know that on newbuilds they do tend to put all the rubble in the garden and cover over it all with turf so it’s going to be a bit of a job as you’ll have to dig all the rubble and rocks out. But don’t feel daunted or overwhelmed. You can just do a little bit at a time. I would dig a bed out, get rid of any rocks, and then every time you plant something get a big bag of multi-purpose compost and dig the plant hole twice the size of the pot so it’s got nice soil, and maybe add some slow release fertiliser in each hole as well each time. Before you know it, you will have created a beautiful garden. I wish I could come and help you 😍

Excellent video Janette. I've wondered about lawn edging for a while - what is it like to mow right up to the edges?

Really easy Paul, provides you hammer the edging down to just below the lawn edge then you can now straight over. I think it looks much neater, plus without it I have a tendency to keep tidying up the edge and then the bed just gets bigger and bigger 🤣

Hi Jenni, yes, the grass was laid on a bed of sand, but every time I plant I add lots of new soil and compost and 2 years later the plants I’ve put in all look very happy 😍
