When I was a wee lad, our country roads were "paved" annually using oil and gravel. For several weeks each summer there would be Galion graders, rollers, and other equipment parked in various areas as the crews knocked off work for the day or week. Naturally, as kids we gravitated to the equipment when there was nobody around, and played "Construction Crew" with them. Once in awhile whoever parked the grader would forget to drop the blade when they left it, and we'd get a juvenile kick out of pulling the lever to drop it. Eventually someone decided to try starting one of the rollers. It started. We ran. Next time we went back it wouldn't even turn over. Color us supremely disappointed :( Watching your series on the Galion "restoration" has brought back 60 year old memories of somewhat simpler times. My everlasting thanks for your efforts, and for your appreciation of the fact that old doesn't mean it should be retired.

For those who don't know - the beginning of this video is a PERFECT example of why you don't try to pull a stuck truck or a stump out in forward gear with an older tractor (especially one without a roll bar). If you try to pull an immovable object, the tractor's drive wheels don't move, and instead the engine just flips the tractor over and squashes you. This was one of the number one ways that farmers died in the early 1900s. The way to keep this from happening is to pull in reverse. You tie your straps or chains around the rear axle, feed them under the tractor through the front wheels, tie onto the stuck truck (or stump), and pull in reverse. If the stump doesn't move, the tractor just digs the front end into the ground. Incidentally, this is also the reason why it's safer to back an old tractor onto a trailer than to drive on in forward gear.

It would be really amazing if you sandblaster it before painting as well. I see so many projects where they sandblast all the surfaces before painting and it comes out amazing. Thumbs Up!
@ToxicMrSmith
@ToxicMrSmith 3 жыл бұрын
The metal on this is too thin to sand blast. It would blow holes all through it and any reasonable pressure. Blasting can also warp panels due to the heat if done wrong. Blasting is the best for surface prep, but not if you don't know what you're doing. Source: ex sandblaster / painter
@davidsellars4327

I use a sandblast setup on my pressure washer. Great for cleaning up machines like Christine. Hint: when you're done, wash the machine with a regular nozzle. It removes the grit that is left on the metal. Its the grit that rusts up if its not washed up. I have had no problems with blowing through sheet metal.

A little story to go with your Road grader. Back in the 60s my father and much of my family worked for a glass company. American saint-gobain. They made the glass for much of America at the time. My father cut glass for years until the local company in Jeanette PA closed its doors around 1966, much of the glass went to PP&G.

I used to spent summers back in the late 60's at my grandparent's place out in the sticks. They lived on a gravel road. One of the highlights would be when the yellow road grader (don't know if it was a Galion but it sure looked like yours in my memory) would come down the road to smooth out the potholes and washboarding. My cousin and I (both about ten) would scramble out when we heard him coming. Great times.

had the same problem with the steel lines on my jd450b i just bought straight pipe and made some accurate bushings on my lathe and silver soldiered the new pipe where the old was rusty. used to do that to fittings when none where available back when i worked at a shipyard building ferries for Sydney harbour. had no problems with leaks on the traxcavator since

2:50 be darn careful doing that, I'm on my county rescue squad, and we had a guy trying to pull free a disc with a 9n ford, not knowing it was stuck on a tree. He gave a yank, and the front went up like yours did, but his rolled completely over, crushing and killing him in the process. It only takes a second for things to go south

I grew up just down the street from the Galion Iron Works (who made graders, rollers and cranes), my brother worked there and my dad sold heavy road equipment, including Galion graders. The shop was bought by Dresser, then sold to Kamatsu, they moved the entire operation down south after the city tax abatement expired.

Yeah, the cribbing job looks like the handiwork of a bunch of tire snatchers too. Matt, your should have more substantial cribbing under that machine, especially if you will be crawling around inside that frame painting and running new hydraulic lines and such. That machine is very unstable the way it is cribbed now. Building a stack of timbers that high only a single width is not good. You cribbing should not be taller than the width of the cribbing. Best to build a 2x2 box with two timbers on each layer spaced some distance apart. That distance is the height of the cribbing you need. Place timbers two to a layer and alternate direction on each layer. Takes a lot more timber yes but very stable and much safer. Short video on cribbing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6vUZ5V-pNGsmaM
