Warning from other games that tride expanding shinies out: if you make a million variations, the colecting aspect oddly loses its apeal as they stop feeling unique. Speaking just for myself, though, while I absolutely understand that the hours of grinding are part of the appeal for some people, it would be very appreciated if there were workarounds you could achieve by other means to improve your odds somehow - they don't have to be easy, just something to make it possible for players who don't have hundreds of hours to sink into the game to get "shinies" too.

I still think that a series of short comics would be an easier way to start exploring the narrative side of Apocryphal, as you wouldn't have to preoccupy yourself with gameplay constraint. But if you are intend on making a game, a point-&-click with exploration, investigation and environemental puzzles as the core gamplay with a simple combat system would probably best suit the vibe and themes of this world. As for how many Enigmorphs there should be in such a game, considering lines are typically 3-stages but their could also be singles or 2-stages lines, and considering your idea for variations, I would say no more than 50 to 60 including the Primes.

There is a somewhat "easy" way of making a high variety of forms whithout having to make them in extremes. If you know Rainworld you know where i'm going, make it so different forms are akin to points on a graph, in which whenever you find an Enygmorph it defines a value within that graphic so the segments of the body are procedurally modified on a scale between the extremes. This would severely increase variety and uniqueness of each Enygmorph whithout requiring so much direct artistic input.

I think that having puzzle-based bosses a la Zelda would be a good concept going forward. The "answers" would come through environmental hints or monster collection data. I imagine boss battles similar to Legends Arceus, except instead of throwing food at them, you would use your enigmorph or some other tool to reveal the weakness, and then you can capture/destroy/dispel whatever the creature is! I think that the major thing about this game that would set it apart is that every enigmorph should feel like an encounter, rather than just something you blindly run into in the "tall grass." There should be no "filler monsters;" every one should feel exciting and potentially dangerous in a unique way. I know that's difficult from a game design perspective, but this concept and motivation makes each enigmorph feel alive and necessary.
@primeviale8378Ай бұрын
God I love this series, I think the concepts are so strong, and it’s definitely very ambitious!! I’d just suggest that, if you are intending on making this a video game, that you watch the scope very closely. Pokemon has only 1 shiny form per Pokemon for a reason, and while the thought of having different combinations of body parts and colors is INSANELY COOL, its technically and labor-wise likely to be extremely challenging to implement. @oblivionslefthandАй бұрын
This idea was based on some of the concepts explored in previous videos, the ideas of the game not being about battling, but exploration and puzzle-solving. It made me think of the Lego games. The first time you go through a map in a Lego game you usually have a set of characters you're supposed to play through, and to solve puzzles you have to use their specific skills and swap between those characters, but on a repeat run you might be able to solve every puzzle with a single character that has all those traits, or there might be a puzzle you couldn't solve the first time because the default characters didn't have the right traits. What if Enigmorphs worked in a similar way? Each has a preset set of puzzle traits, and exploring a "dungeon" would require the trial and error of bringing certain Enigmorphs with you to get to certain locations. Maybe very rare or powerful Enigmorphs are found behind just the right set of puzzles that there are only a few combinations that would allow you to get there. I'd also think that in this scenario, having a map you can take notes on, and check on outside of being in there, would help you when revisiting areas to discover new things. Just a thought I had in between videos.

I really like the idea of having multiple variants or traits for each Enigmorph, but having them be variable per enigmorph seems like it would get really tedious really quickly. There's a reason why so many people shiny hunt with things that boost their odds. If you want to include multiple traits in sort of a genetic kind of way, perhaps being able to fuse enigmorphs of the same species would be a good way to go about that, or perhaps collecting some kind of shard or soul item that allows you to change the form of your enigmorph that you can only get from obtaining or slaying a rare form that you find in the wild. This encourages the hunting, but it also cuts down on the tedium.
@justalexiadudeАй бұрын
dunno if this would be great, but an idea i have would be the player going out in different areas, trying to fill out information about each Enigmorph by trying to find out if theyre hostile, passive, or if doing some specific thing angers them, or maybe even try to figure out how they fight, how to defeat them or what they prefer to consume, kinda like monster hunter but instead of defeating them, u study them. u could probably take pictures of them to add to some sort of notebook with a page dedicated to each of them

If we can pitch gameplay mechanics, i feel like i remember you mentioning the idea of enigmorphs being able to change forms in either direction between nascent, harbinger, and apex. If we're looking at it through a pokemon style turn based RPG lens, then it could be interesting to have the enigmorphs change form as an action in the middle of a battle to gain different stats and possibly different moves. While a nascent enigmorph could be fast, piercing, and maybe focus more on status abilities as a sort of rogue character; an apex enigmorph could then be a tanky character that's a heavy hitter but is also very slow. Needing to switch between forms would lean a lot further into the strategy side of things that pokemons typical move spamming (at least in the main game's plots). Also, this mechanic would likely encourage the use of status moves as more turns would be 'wasted' on state changing actions. As a side note, I think it could be interesting to consider how a monster collection turn based battle system could easily translate into more of a deck builder structure.

Hey Jack, Lovely to get this update. I am and shall continue to look forward to this project. Let's start with comments/ questions: - The newest designs are great. I love the forms of Gibaku and the main colour. - Is there a reason for the repetition of belly-mouth and mono-eye? Those characteristics are interesting (while not on top of my list in terms of appeal), but (maybe because of the limited pool of enigmorph) they feel overused right now. A suggestion for a concept: - An enigmorph based on Reflexion. A broken mirror transforming into a "stained glass window" trying to recreate what it once reflected. - For a Prime Enigmorph: The concept of Known and Unknown. The Known being a tiny little shardlike creature entangled in the Unknown.

I always love seeing more developments with apocryphal and something that scratches my shiny hunting itch will certainly do nicely. I will say that the ability mix and match alternate traits seems super fun but I think the probability of the mechanic poses a small issue, how are the non color Sakura traits (face and braids) a Sakura trait unless there’s a correlation? What if instead of being rolled completely separately there was a roll for Common-Morph, Rare-Morph 1, Rare-Morph 2, then a separate roll to see if there are deviations from the default traits of that morph. This allows the mixing and matching of different morph traits while still making certain traits seem like they belong to certain morphs. On a somewhat unrelated note I did have an idea for another system that might work if we’re using enigmorphs to solve puzzles the way you discussed in a previous video. While it makes sense for certain general kinds of enigmorphs (flora, fauna, construct, etc.) to share certain capabilities I think it would make sense to use a system somewhat similar to Pokémon abilities but having maybe 3-5 per enigmorph to give them a unique skillset when interacting with the world. By having there be a set list that could be shared among many kinds of enigmorphs it would allow puzzles to be streamlined while having many possible solutions, it could be used to realize the idea that some nascent enigmorphs might have more capabilities than their harbinger form, it could give you a reason to be constantly diversifying your team and befriending a lot of enigmorphs. I really like the idea if Apocryphal is going to be more puzzle oriented and reward curiosity and all that good stuff.

I NEED MORE OF THIS!! I love everything about this project. One potential idea for an enigmorph is maybe some sort of construct type religious tool/item. I’m not sure if you’re thinking of having split corruptions but if you did, you could have it corrupt to portray either the “evil” or “good” side of the religion, depending on what it’s exposed to by humans. If it is exposed to more fear of the evil side or praise of the good side, it’ll choose which side it deems more powerful and take that form. Maybe the “good” side could be the light type, and the “bad” side could be fire type?

I discovered your channel through this video, and your concepts inspired me, so I wanted to share a few ideas that have sprouted in my mind. The idea of a more adult, strategic "Pokémon-like" game has incredible potential!! I’ve thought about revising the basic gameplay loops of Pokémon to give it a fresh twist, particularly regarding capture and evolution. I hope this can inspire you for what’s next! Good luck to you! Enigmorphs: Unstable creatures, "cursed" by primordial energy, that roam the world. They do not respond to human commands and can be violent. Their curse is based on five "receptacles" on their bodies forming a pentagram. Each receptacle corresponds to an element unique to this universe (fire, water, darkness, etc.). Capture: To capture an Enigmorph, scientists must use chains infused with occult energy (the effectiveness of the chains depends on the type of infused energy corresponding to the type of Enigmorph). Initially, the creatures are resistant to the chains, but during battles (a classic turn-based system, to be developed), it's possible to weaken their resistance. By using a technique that corresponds to one of the receptacles’ types, that receptacle breaks, decreasing the creature’s resistance to capture. However, when encountering an Enigmorph for the first time, we do not know the nature of its receptacles, prompting us to try different attack types, which makes capturing more strategic regarding team composition. We can also imagine consumables to use in battle that simulate the effect of using a specific type of technique. The Enigmorphs in the starting area would have accessible receptacle types, but as the game progresses, these can become more complex and even more numerous. Evolution: After reaching a certain level, a pentagram activates on the creatures' bodies, indicating that a transmutation ritual is possible. The player can then decide to organize this ritual: necessary base materials (unlockable through quests or crafting), specific locations, and specific temporal conditions. The chains used to capture the Enigmorph prevent it from transmuting, so they must be removed, freeing the creature but allowing it to transmute. At this point, a battle begins against our own creature: once all its receptacles are broken, the Enigmorph transmutes, and it can be captured again. If it is killed or if the player dies, the Enigmorph does not transmute (or is lost in hardcore mode). This adds a strategic layer to the evolution mechanic and allows for greater involvement in team formation. It can also allow for the evolution of certain creatures to coincide with key moments in the storyline (for example, a starter that can only reach its final form after completing a quest that grants access to a location for the ritual, just before facing an important boss). We can also imagine alternative evolutions based on the type of ritual we choose to perform (the more difficult the ritual, the more powerful the transmutation form, for example).

Loving the Enigmorph designs so far, your passion for the mysterious really shines through! As far as the gameplay aspect goes, it's probably worth it to think about different games you've played and whether or not their mechanics fit your vision, and how. Pokémon for example tends to keep the main story gameplay accessible enough that putting a Pokémon with a type advantage in front and using the move with the highest number is usually a sufficient strategy. Does something like that keep battles a fun diversion and let the aesthetics and world design take center stage, or would it make the Enigmorphs feel unremarkable by having such otherworldly designs be simple to deal with? Legends Arceus added the idea of move styles, which give each move two additional versions, each with their own pros and cons. Does the player and their opponent having more options deepen engagement, or make the game feel like playing chess against a computer that knows you've chosen unoptimally? Would expanding on the idea of styles add variety or clutter? Game design is an artform like any other, you flex your creative muscles by studying how and why other artists make the decisions they do, and how they contribute to the final piece. And other people can only give you advice for you to judge on your own terms, it's your style after all, not theirs.

This is very much a setting I'd love to write something formally for if I ever get the chance.

If he thinks people played it primarily for the monster design and deep lore, then he's missing the point. people played it because it was fun and silly, and calling it a cash grab is wild, it's far from a piece of turd tossed to us in hopes we would buy it, unlike star wars outlaws, concord, Dustborn and suicide squad...

I think an enigmorph based on a map would be cool, A monster could probably emerge from it based on those creepy illustrations on older maps (especially for sea creatures)

Another amazing video for the Apocryphal repertoire, and another marvelous design to the growing numers. I still stand with the idea of it being a TTRPG setting and gameplay book, but if game is still the most popular, I have to say, that model really does a good job in selling the idea. On the shiny concept, one thing you made me remember was how early Digimon had variants, essentially reusing model and animations for a entire separate creature, to increase creature count and diversify the game a bit, not sure if it helps.

Since you showed some lethal company gameplay. What if your game was somewhat similiar to that. Like the gameplay loop is: 1. You get a request from your organization that a new enigmorph has been spotted in a location. For example an abandoned factory 2. You travel to that location and meet other humans and maybe some lesser enigmorphs on the way. 3. You reach the location and suddenly the game becomes somewhat a horror game with the enigmorph warping its surroundings and youre solving puzzles, interact with enigmorphs until you reach the target enigmorph. And instead of having traditional turn based combat, what if it was more like a mix of pokemon snap and lethal company, where you have gadget and enigmoroh abilities which you can use to interact with the enviroment and enigmorphs. Like every Enigmorph has things they likenand dislike. Maybe you can befriend the plant enigmorph by watering plants in front of it for example.

The potency of the apocryphal vision and the way you are able to express it in these designs is just so compelling to me for reasons I can’t quite articulate, but I think it is at least in part because it reminds me of the times I feel inspired and creative. All that to say, amazing work and all the best!

You know, I just had a thought, If you want a minigame, Or maybe a short teaser game to drum up hype... Why not take inspiration from a little indie game called: *"Home Safety Hotline".* The idea is that you play the part of a hotline operator, Needing to identify what your callers are dealing with. Rats gnawing in the walls. Black mould causing respiratory problems. A TV that is, In fact, A living creature that's enveloped the callers child, Slowly digesting them with no way to get them out, While all you can do is to use a memory draining wisp to forget they ever existed. Frozen leaky pipes. That sort of thing you know? You could even have the player using whatever this game equivalent to the Pokédex as the guidebook needed to figure out what protocol should be used.

I could see Bellebora as a character you encounter in specific forested areas based on how you interact with the forest. If you collect and plant seeds and clear away waste it will appear in a positive encounter to aid you in some way or give you some gift while if you damage the forest like chopping trees to sell or build up the home base too much at once you will get in a battle encounter where it will attack and intimidate you until you leave.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of having multiple forms and being able to have Enigmorphs with a mixture of traits. It's one of my favorite things to customize companions in games, but it's so soooo rare to see. This video has made me feel super inspired, even moreso than many your other videos! I do like the expansion on the idea of shinies, but as other people have said it can get out of hand really quickly and end up not being fun. Just one Enigmorph with 3 parts that can have 3 variations results in 27 possibilities. Not only would this make the amount of work for a game huge (imagine even 20 Enigmorhps totaling 520 forms), players who enjoy collecting special forms or ones who just want to hunt for a specific form would have to go through hell. I think simplifying the idea would work best, maybe instead of 3 forms with 3 parts, just have the 3 forms. I know this is less interesting, but’s so much more manageable for developing a game and for players who play the game.

You mentioned at one point early on having the capture method for the Enigmorphs be tied to their specific lore, and I thought that was a beautiful idea. I’m not sure how viable that is with the number of Enigmorphs to plan to make or how many there will be, but the idea of maybe finding an Enigmorph that is just lonely and sitting with it so it joins you… that warmed my heart a little. And it does place a heavier emphasis on research, exploration, and storytelling.
@JmonsterNEOАй бұрын
I think that you should look at the Demon God Pillars from the Fate series for ideas for the deathbloom-sauropod design. Also I think you could get a few good ideas from the Abnormalities of the Project Moon series, which are all eldritch entities that are based from the collective consciousness. You could also have Enigmorphs generated by a certain Prime share design styles.

I love the creature designs and the care put into them and the world they inhabit, which may also be why i like the idea of enigmorph variants. Their differences however small helps them feel more alive and unique than they already are to me, i will look forward to whatever is next :)
