I have found that if you don't rotate the molecule so that hydrogen is pointed to the back, and just determine priorities, and get either R or S, the correct answer is the opposite. For instance: I determined the S config of the third carbon by just determining the config of this carbon without rotating, which gave me R. So that means the correct answer is S. I haven't found an example for which this doesn't work, so please let me know if I'm wrong. Sorry if I butchered the explanation.

I've been trying to figure this out forever! But your method only works if the lowest priority group is facing out of the page. If the lowest priority group is on the plane of the page, then you have to switch the 4th priority group with the group that is facing behind the page. (redraw this on paper), determine R vs S. But since we changed the absolute configuration/spatial arrangements of the groups, the correct answer is the opposite of that.

Hej Khan at 1.07 you draw a hydrogen that points towards os (downwards). My question is that why couldnt you draw the hydrygen upwards while its still pointing towards us?

Dude I’ll be nice if Sal can answer every question on KZbin but unfortunately he can’t, we’ll I don’t know exactly but while doing problems I figured out that it normally mess up the clockwise and anti clockwise orientation. On top of that we are using dash and wedge and if two alkyl groups are already on page then you can’t put third group on the page it has to be going in backward or forward direction here H has to be in forward direction. And I can see you posted this question 4 yrs ago I don’t if it’ll be useful now.
