In this video, we discuss uneducated speculators bidding up fairly common factory sealed Atari 2600 games graded by WATA Games and sold via Heritage Auctions. More videos to follow, as this market is unestablished and being manipulated massively. Be cautious if entering the market for vintage graded video games at present time.

I couldn't try to even calculate how many unopened 2600 games are out there -- they were being sold on clearance at toy stores until the late 80s/early 90s for pennies on the dollar.

People said the same thing about Pokemon cards being in a "bubble" after prices went way up in 2016 but this "bubble" never popped. Prices retraced a little bit after the price surge led to an increase in the population for many cards but in the last few years the price of sealed product has gone up exponentially and now the supply for the most valuable vintage stuff is extremely low relative to the size of the market. Pokemon has been entrenched in the culture for over 20 years now and it's still super popular with today's children, this isn't something that's going away anytime soon.
@ReservedInvestments

But prices can still fall...Star Wars collectibles have fallen in value even from the coveted Kenner vintage line. You can have a pop culture icon gain in popularity while prices for vintage collectibles in that category still fall. Pokemon is in a bubble at present time...much like MTG was back when Alpha Investments appeared...same speculators, same market manipulators...
@EnlightenedBulbasaur
@EnlightenedBulbasaur 4 жыл бұрын
@@ReservedInvestments I'm not saying that market manipulators don't exist but I will say that when you look at the sheer number of people who are interested in the hobby against the tiny supply of the most valuable vintage stuff (sealed boxes, trophy cards, 1st edition PSA 10s/9s, etc.) the prices don't seem at all unsustainable to me in the long-term. (Again, I'm not saying there won't be a retrace on prices for certain items that blew up quickly.) There are some problems with trying to do a 1-to-1 comparison between Pokemon and other hobbies like Star Wars and Magic. Star Wars was not a hobby built around collecting. Pokemon was built for collecting from the ground up, both in the games and the cards and everything else. MTG does not have nearly as large of an audience as Pokemon. Pokemon is the highest-grossing media franchise of all-time, Magic can't compete with that. MTG is being more confined to a specific older audience, Pokemon is spreading across generations. Besides that, MTG cards that have fallen in value are mostly newer stuff from what I understand. The oldest stuff like the Alpha cards really hasn't fallen off in value at all. My point is not that vintage Pokemon products can never fall in value. I just think you're mischaracterizing what's going on with the market as a bubble that is about to pop.

@avenger1212
@avenger1212 3 жыл бұрын
I've listened to a number of your videos now, and when you talk about what pop culture items sell for, you don't often seem to mention that sales of these items do often go to people that actually want the item and are not buying it for an investment. I paid $250 each for a couple of graded TMNT turtle figures recently which may or may not go up in value. I just researched eBay prices on them as far back as the history went (which isn't usually more than a few months), and tried to get a good price based on that. If they go up in value great. If they go down, I really don't care cause, my God man, Leonardo brings back so many great memories of going to Walmart and cracking that blister in the back of my parents car on the way home as the streetlights went by, excited to get home when I finally had enough light to appreciate the treasure I had. The value of that figure is beyond money to me. I worked to get money to get those figures, and I had to work to find them all because they were just so darn popular back then and SO MANY weeks going to Warlmart yielded an empty shelf except for the ones nobody wanted like Rat King or Baxter Stockman. It was a big deal to find one. It's possible the guy that bought Pitfall wanted to have a good grade graded copy of it, and bought it thinking "This must be what these are going for". It seems like someone spending $2500 is going to be very careful about it and do due diligence. But, if they aren't sacrificing food for a collectible, they may just decide the price is worth it to them for the enjoyment of having it at that time. I'm not saying your advice is bad here, but not every sale is someone trying to make a buck down the road. I just think that sometimes gets overlooked for people who want the item. For them, all this investing and speculating just makes it expensive if not impossible for them to buy back the memories they love. I don't know what my point is here, as this is an investment channel, so of course your discussions are going to be driven by that. I guess I just wanted to comment on this particular aspect of the trade. I guess I'm also just disappointed that these wonderful items from our past are treated this way. And, maybe this is what you mean by established collecting categories, that it's not driven by people who love the items and realistic and established historical values that let people get what they pay for. And, if so, that's a shame. But, I'm glad you're out here making these videos. So, also, THANKS!

the Pitfall argument ignores the significance of genre creating first appearance like let's say PSA 9 Michael Jordan RC 1st Fleer Appearance est. $20K vs PSA 10 Jordan 2nd Fleer Appearance est. $10K OR CGC 94 Amazing Fantasy #15 est. $20K vs Amazing Spidey #1 vs Amazing Spidey #2 so it's more about the historical significance as Pitfall II has little significance in terms of 1st appearance, genre making, history, etc. $10K for a 1st Appearance, 1st Genre, etc. might appear undervalued to investors that believe video games will make the pitfall leap from toys to hobbies to collectibles then cross the chasm to legitimate investments. Insurance companies will decide that in time... But as of May, 2020 the market is shaking out 1st Appearances, 1st Editions, Genre Pioneers, Franchise Rookies, Short Prints, Variations, Test Runs, Prototypes, etc. and may take years to sort out but we believe this 1st wave of 1st appearances reaching four and five figures is the very beginning of a long long career as gaming matures from collecting into investing at the same time digital reduces production of physical further cementing the art value of the 100 person teams required to produce each sharp 8 cornered boxed with manual to explain highly engineered physical cartridges to investors forever sealed in a VGA/WATA case.

It was actually 2014. My memory is worse than I thought haha. Here's a snippet from a member over at AtariAge breaking down my buy/sell: In the end a price point of $440 was agreed to. IMO the seller is damn lucky he broke even off the $320 he originally paid for it. Subtract 15% ebay fees and you get approximately ~$374 back. Minus what he paid is ~$54, so in the end, he flipped it for barely ~16% profit. Lucky he passed off an expensive turd now somebody else has to "eat" it! I'd of gladly paid $30, not a penny more... :P Flash forward six years, WHAM, 9K item.

Yeah, I completely agree with you here. You have not lost your mind the guy that bought Mario did. I do have a question I would like to ask you. You see, I'm a collector with an extensive collection. We have a spare bedroom dedicated to all things retro gaming. We typically buy to enjoy them and while it's nice to have value it doesn't matter much (anymore). Although...I might take advantage of this if the market for 2600-7800 games are white hot. I received a huge bin many years ago of complete games that just collect dust. At any rate, I have always been leary of the sealed games market as I simply don't trust it. Have you ever experienced anyone attempting to pass off a fake bill of sales? Perhaps someone that did some factory sealing on their own. I have witnessed thieves attempt to unload repro (Musha- GEN/US/1990) carts once to a friends shop and we caught them red handed. They were so close had we not opened them he might have purchased...well the Musha cart. You're passionate brother, don't ever apologize for that. ONLY SUPPLY vs DEMAND can answer your Q: how many 9.2 Mario Boxes with A+ Factory Sealing assumed 10.0 Cart + 10.0 Manual + 10.0 inserts and inner cardboard, etc. will be revealed this summer by WATA's Population Report which can be accessed with a smart phone scan of the case vs how many billions of potential gamers want a piece of early Mario art (assuming the box and circuit board are art) vs how many of those Silver Certificates are graded 65 vs how many investors actually want that piece? Our analysis as of 5/11/2020 deduces that the video game art has a much lower supply in WATA 9.2 A+ 10.0 10.0 vs 10 to 100 times more potential demand if you include kids, females, global, etc. Baby Boomers have run the antiques and collectibles trades for decades, and this early video game art piece is the 1st example of a new generation of collectors just starting to invest. If early 2D comic books and sports cards can go for millions with a small demand base of primarily males older investors, we believe that 3D early Video Game art pieces that include 8 sharp cornered artworked boxes with 10.0 circuit boards, that sometimes require a team of 100s of artists, engineers, etc. to produce should meet and eventually surpass 2D art as Boomer demand fades. So with supply unknown until WATA's population reports, we can only say that the $35,000,000,000 in video game sales in 2019, indicate that the demand for gaming in general far exceeds collecting in most of the trade in terms of populations around the world including males, females, young, middle age, but maybe not wealthy Baby Boomers. So if this demand base does become wealthy, and future investors consider an early video game art piece on par with first edition comics or rookie cards, a first appearance like Mario, has the potential to reach towards five, six and maybe seven figures. If this shakes out as the Mario Rookie Card or 1st Appearance and/or 1st Printing, it could be a million dollar piece if the demand ramps up as millennials gain wealth out of this recession. We believe that the first million dollar early video game art piece will come sooner than that in the form of a...

"We believe that the first million dollar early video game art piece will come sooner than that in the form of a..." And then it was Mario 64. Only to then half in price appreciation, two months after. Speculative frenzy is a bitch. XD

Sealed video games and even rare/uncommon opened games prices are stupid high.. pokemon stuff is even worse overall. It will all come crumbling down way before these "investors" see it coming.

Much of the future wealth growth will occur in Parts of East Asia, India or parts of Africa. So if someone is looking for returns on modern collectible market, perhaps doing some research regarding what people in those countries like to collect will make more sense. I know rare Nike Jordan shoes have captivated a global collector audience. You never know, maybe someone will start a Sneaker grading company.

the final value fees on eBay (the global leader in the collectible trades) have a sneaker loophole that has fueled buying and selling because the cost of transactions has dropped to almost free on high end...once a platform moves towards free trading of video games, then the collecting hobby will turn into investing overnight, but in 2020, the costs for submitting, shipping, return shipping, selling fees, payment fees, promotion fees, postage, insurance, etc. prevents video game from captivating an audience like Michael Jordan has

Nobody is going to care about this game when plenty of people care about it right now to drive the price up to $9,000 and not every single person in the world only cares about reselling some people just want to own a graded copy of a video game which makes them happy

boxes, games, manuals and circuit boards are different products, with different types of artistic values with different production numbers, and the highest values all focus on the box, not games...agreed that carts and manuals have been produced in the tens of millions, but boxes with 8 sharp corners...GOOD LUCK :)

You and your 8 sharp corners... Give it a rest, man. Yes, you won't find games like this in everyone's attics, but they are out there. There are a small number of people sitting on stacks of these games in perfect condition. They are not going to flood the market with them, they are going to trickle them out so they seem rarer than they are.

I would hazard a guess that the demographics of coin collectors is primarily older white men w money. Video games while it has it’s flaws seems more diverse, at least in ages

Coins are a very advanced field, and you really can’t do anything in that market investment wise without spending thousands of dollars on one coin. As such, it is usually dominated by collectors who are slightly older...

I do have a serious question with the release of PlayStation 5 just around the corner.. and a potential for the following generation of gaming becoming strictly digital will the value of physical games drastically increase? This is what I'm banking on. Physical games becoming highly sought-after and collectible.

Great video, but be aware that you are potentially involved in price fixing, which violates antitrust laws. There's no getting around this when competitors work as a "group" to do anything that ultimately affects the price of something. Ask your lawyer.

@@ReservedInvestments It's much more complex than that. All I will say is horizontal collusion can get you into trouble and you shouldn't make legal assumptions based on internet research. Talk to an antitrust lawyer.
