My favorite stereotype is the old guy with the funny hat, chest pack , 4 wt, 5 wt, and 6 wt rods. He still snatches bugs out of the air in an effort to match the hatch. When he gets to the river, he sits on the rivers edge and watches the water in an effort to understand what the fish are doing. Unlike some that jump out of their SUV, run down to the river and start casting. He is the guy that spent the winter tying for spring and summer hatches. He quietly goes about the business of catching the quality fish out of the rivers he likes to fish. He is one of those fishermen who took the time to teach a 13 year old kid how to catch a trout. Fast forward 54 years, I own a funny hat, a chest pack, and too many rods.

Dude! From a Mainer: thank you so much for keeping our Great Secret!! Seriously...I've been a fishing guide in Wyoming, Idaho, and Alaska. I've been a Maine guide for years now and am convinced it's the best fishing in the contiguous US. That's right--WAY better than Montana. One day last September, in an 8 hour period, I caught 11 salmon, over 60 native brookies (REAL brookies), 6 stripers, bunch of smallies, a couple of large mouths, a couple dozen crappie, and two muskies (38", 44")-- just to see if I could do it while taking the time to make fun of MassHoles. It wasn't that hard. But don't tell anybody. Appreciate it.

"Hi. I'm Ben, and I crush souls." 🤣 I grew up trout fishing in North Georgia, and eastern Tennessee, and have great memories of yankin stocker limits out on the regular. Now that I'm in my 40's, and can finally get back to it...BAM, Ben kills my hopes and dreams. After watching this, I turned my fly rods in to wall art, and bought a tenkara (which is an ancient Tibetan word for unable to cast, fyi), and went back to bream fishing in the neighborhood ponds. Thanks Ben! In all seriousness, I just found your channel, and have been binge watching it for a week. Love it! Keep up the great work!

As a North Georgia guy, you nailed it and I always laugh at how silly it is. There's a few actual wild trout streams that are worth the effort (barely), but there could be quite a few more if not for the way GA DNR handles the fisheries. It's basically an inefficient form of a food stamp program. Then you have the clowns bragging about their dog food trophies like you point out. They'll even call them wild fish...lol... Bass fishing and saltwater fishing are similarly worse than our neighboring states because of mismanagement. That's what happens when you get fisheries biologists with UGA degrees, though.

White the videos of those "monsters" are very enticing, I'd feel like a fraud if I tried to convince my non-trout buddies that those were trophies. As fun as it would be to hook one of them, I'd be more satisfied catching a single wild, than a dozen of those. Nothing against stocked fish. I've caught them all my life, but those things are 1000% marketed at the upper class that, more than likely, bought a $1000 rod before ever even thinking about how to cast it.

@@bwhtr06 I had to revisit this video since yesterday was the Trout Festival in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Yeppeer. Lots of guys thinking that their way is the only way and their flies are the only flies. However, There is a LOT, like an actual few tons of fish in these rivers around North Georgia. And most rivers have reproducing Brownies now so those aren't stocked as often. It's getting better in Georgia, you just have to go when everyone else is working.

You're right on the money about the Soque in Georgia. I live an hour from there and wouldnt fish it if you paid me. The few around here that actually have moral values go to Tennessee or North Carolina. It is kind of funny seeing a lawyer or dentist pull up in a brand new Tesla decked out in orvis takes a 20-minute trout fishing tutorial and then catches a 10 lb brown. Then they go out west where it's mainly native and don't catch anything

As a Georgia fly fisherman, I gotta admit, the guides locking down private sections of the river with big dumb stocked trout is BS. Ruining it. There are little blur lining creeks with little 6 inch brookies that you have to hike 2 miles through briars to get too. And some natural browns below Buford Dam but yes, I wouldn't describe the fly fishing here as good. We do the best we can, minus the private water mess.

Love your work. Very well orchestrated and executed. Largely informative and occasionally hilarious. Question. When was the last time you ate a fish you caught? Oh and what was his name?

I wanted to take exception with your view on Maine, but I really wish nobody came here to fish. So, please keep telling people there are no fish here. While your at it, tell them to get their lobster shipped to them and to stay home.

I'm from ND I don't think many know what fly fishing is. The 2 fly shops I knew about went bankrupt years ago. Although when I go "home" to visit family and friends I bring my fly rod (I only own 1 and catch an occasional figh with it too!) mostly for the looks I get and the "what is that" questions.

@@dakotagreg1177 caught quite a lot of Walleye fly fishing a couple lakes in Central ND this summer. The looks and comments I got would have been worth the trip without the fish!

The Cali part was gut bustingly hilarious. I lived there for almost 10 years. The corbina roast was my favorite. There's some truth to that one, 😂😂
