That was for gambling on the sport, if you use steroids and are caught the first time you get suspended in the NBA only 10 games only 1 8th of one season, in the NFL 4 games only like a quarter of a season in baseball 50 games not even a 1/2 of one season in track 5 f*cking years for 1st time use. The small countries counter by not testing and giving the athletes warning when wada inspectors are headed their way, but they can't protect them abroad.

As a physician who has used ergogenic drugs for decades to treat chronic illness and aging patients, I can say definitively that EPO is a drug not frequently used by pro athletes. There are far better drugs. EPO was used many, many decades ago. To see it used today makes no sense to me. Why? There are so many better options!

I used to be a national level athlete in the 70s, but the rise of doping killed my interest in the sport. Two of my training partners won World and Olympic golds, and both were doping. One (David Jenkins) went on to run a multi-million dollar doping operation in the US, before he got caught and convicted. According to him, if he ever spilled what he knows the history of the sport would have to be rewritten. I hope that they've got it all more under control these days but I rather doubt it. I suspect that the dopers are always just a step or two ahead of the testers...

@@soc2168 It must be great to be omniscient and sneer at people you don't know. I was at high school with David and handed over to him in our all-conquering 4x100 relay. Trained with him for years - never beat him at anything, ever (though he was older than me). He had amazing ability - could have been an all-time great like Moses/Johnson/Bolt if he hadn't been so lazy, and eventually he started doping as a shortcut. David won European and World gold and Olympic Silver. The other athlete was never caught (though everyone knew) so I won't name him. He won an Olympic gold.

In case she really needed that EPO treatment why wouldn't they say it just at the beginning of her treatment? Why would they wait till she is being tested positive and only then would come up with this explanation? They clearly know that this is doping and that she is being tested regularly. Why wouldn't they tell before "look we have an athlete here who needs this treatment because of these reasons and she is not gonna competing in big events for as long as it is in her system"... And in case it was a real medical treatment wouldn't they have proof of it? Some doctors must have diagnosed her and came up with this treatment, right? When I was accused of being a cheater and being punished for it, I would show my medical records immediately...

If her kidneys were that bad off, she would have been on dialysis. Also, if your red blood cell count is so low that you may die, then you would receive a blood transfusion. My grandma received both both blood trasfusions and epo bc both her bone marrow and kidneys were permanently at low functioning. But if you are otherwise healthy and merely have a kidney infection, you just take antibiotics and it clears up in hours or a couple days.

I just read a 2020 meta-analysis of a number studies on EPO effectiveness. The paper questions the true benefit of rHuEPO, the synthesized version, on athletic performance. The studies are conflicting, the evidence low to moderate quality as is stated in the study. It also only seemed beneficial at maximum intensity of exercise, so it might be of little use to endurance athletes, anyway. Sad if she blew up her career for this.

If there was a real effort in this case to obtain those records, and they could not be found, that to me is hard evidence of cheating. Hi. I've seen in Strava some 35yr old casual marathoners that, using a hr band during their best sub 3hr marathon, have an average of 132 beats and others 182 beats. The first one says their max hr is 150 (impossible by their age according to any cardiologist) and the other says it's their endurance (impossible to maintain that for 3hr according to any cardiologist). Do you think they dope?

HR is very individual. 132 avg and 150 max seems possible. 182 avg over 3h is probably a bad reading from the HR monitor. I know mine sometimes gave me bad readings, even high end chest straps.

I know that the watch optical hr can get messy if it is not really adjust, but in their case it happens always.

I feel like the question of how many cheaters there are has to depend a lot on the systems within which these athletes operate. If it were all up to just them and their own initiative, I wouldn't put it any higher than cheating in any other endeavor. Ten percent maybe? Twenty? But it's not just up to them. They're all part of various organizations made up of many people, where the incentive is extremely strong for the people in charge to produce results. Meaning the scum will very often rise to the top. Because of that, I expect the percentage of dirty organizations to be much higher than the percentage of "natural cheaters", and the ranks of cheaters to include not only the ones who would have done it anyway, but some who were seen as easy to influence, some who were tricked, and some who were totally unknowing. Edit: Also those who might have cheated if it were easy to arrange, but lack the capability on their own so never would have if not exposed to the greater resources of a national or professional organization. I wouldn't be surprised if it were as high as half, overall. There is probably no way to know.

That's so dumb. It should be that the suspension starts over if you take yourself out of the RTP at any point for any reason while suspended. Interestingly one of the biggest signs that gymnast Simone Biles didn't retire after 2021 was the fact that she never removed herself from the testing pool. She wasn't training, but she was still logging her whereabouts and being tested. That's how clean athletes behave.

@@AshworthMild Yes i know, but if you are banned for 5 years, then you are banned for five years, and there is nothing stating that an athlete that has ended their career should be tested. If you end your career and does a comeback after 5 years, then the Wada code states that the athlete must be availeble for testing for 6 months before the first competition. There is nothin that states that if tey end their career that they should be tested. The reson for this is if they should work as a coach and not an athlete after those five years. It's also stated that a liftetime ban is until 40 years of age, because of that.

Athletes don't just go off on their own and use EPO, roids, PEDs etc. Also, top level athlete's do not simply train themselves. The coach is more than likely involved somehow. Top athletes have top notch coaches. Start nosing around certain coaches and you will likely find a whole group of athletes using PEDs.

It's unfortunate, but at least she accepted the results of the findings, but she is no teenager like the Russian figure skater who was banned for four years of a banned substance giving to her unaware but she got penaltized not her coaches nor doctor nor the Federation of Russian figure skating which all of them are guilty and became problematic to the athlete: but this woman might or might not 🚭🚫 have known that seriousness of what she was given because she was only thinking about getting on the podium either first 🥇, second 🥈, or third 🥉, and the question is when did she start taking these substances and since medical records are confidential and private, and that substance might have left her body too so if won't get trace back to him if he has done something illegal but whom knew about it? DOC and I am including the coach too because of DESPERATION for her to get on the podium but I can't prove it either and like the Russian figure skater, this athlete met the same fate of four years of being penalized and banned regardless if she is innocent or not 🚭🚫!!! It seems many of your top athletes around the world are taking something. If something is not done to clean up the sport the Olympics will be a joke.

There's likely many more because the biological passport hasn't been updated with the science. I think it would be more fair to legalize EPO with limit on hematocrit and testing for plasma expanders. Otherwise money gives the advantage to those who can afford altitude simulation tents or moving to 4,000 meters and training with oxygen. Some Norwegians and Fins have a genetic mutation giving then hemoglobin levels of 20 to 22 g/dL and that's legal but still carries risk.

It's very hard to put all of the blame on these athletes when the allure of wealth and fame is so great and cheating is so rampant among the global company sponsors, the gambling industry and so on... I have known several minor league baseball players who had to compete clean against many "can't miss" players who were cheating and getting away with it. It's a rampant problem. It's going to continue so long as those making it possible and even necessary are not confronted. It's the money stupid!! I actually feel sorry for these athletes. Many of those they are defeating by cheating are cheating too! It's just not fair all around.

It's more likely that most are using. The ones that get caught probably are taking more chances, due to injury, age or lack of natural talent. In other words, if you're extremely talented and well trained, you can take a more cautious approach to PED usage. If you're lagging behind your peers you're more willing to take some chances. The other thing that happens (same with criminals of all types) is that you're using and getting away with for so long that you just get reckless.

The solution for both is identical and that's why I spent tremendous time learning how athletes dope. Doping techniques save the lives of chronic illness patients and aging patients. In my journey to learn I discovered everyone must dope to remain competitive. In fact, I soon had coaches all over the USA confiding in me as they learned about my interest. Come to find out everyone must do it. Even GIRLS JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL soccer players! So the idea of wagging your finger at pro athletes is ridiculous!

Sad that you think that; I believe with all that measures in place, actual doping has gotten quite rare. Of course there are certain exploits and workarounds being used to get a small advantage, but outright doping like we know it from the 1990s to 2000s has gotten very difficult these days.

​@nunja924 Sad that you think that. Between custom sarms and undectable new things, Peptides, drugs, injectable aminos its very very easy to dope now. Even regular sarms off the internet can be clear of your system in under a week. ALL athletes at that level using performance enhancers. Only question is are they using legal or illegal ones. I am sure the Dutch team is using for example. They are probably keeping it all within the rules or as close as they can. Most male athletes can take 250 to 300mg a week of testosterone and not test positive. Women can run theirs up to 4 times the normal female limit. Big advantage, but to be legal has to be prescribed and monitored by a doctor for a valid condition. They want to monitor to keep it high but within the legal limit. Taking epo is stupid though. Other legal and also illegal undectable ways to accomplish same thing. Easiest is to sleep 6 hrs a day in an altitude chamber.
