Record profits, no accountability, and complete incompetence. All of their executives should be fired immediately and with no severance packages. Definitely no bonuses this year. Beryl was a minor event compared to the 4 major storms predicted for this season.

@@silentmajority8365you clearly don’t know anything. Energy companies can also be public hahaha but that’s besides the point. Texas decided they didn’t want to be part of the United States grid and decided to do it on their own and have their own energy grid with their own regulations. This storm was a category 1. It shouldn’t have done this much damage. Florida didn’t even have these bad of a power outage and they were hit with a category 4. Please research more. It’s strictly because of RED STATE POLICIES.

The whole country is for sale.. around the COVID timeframe, foreign investors purchasing US utilities skyrocketed. The response is poor because all of the owners are foreign investors. No heads are rolling because it’s not their problem. The money has already been made.

Seriously, "minimize disruption" do you bother at all to see the issues in other countries where the gooberment runs the power infrastructure. Try just about all of them. The only reason so many want to live in America is because of the "better life" in a free market system. Most countries can't keep the power on when there are no storms, look at Mexico. Local here. They own the poles. Houston use to divide the power poles for each region of the city with different companies. Center Point operates nearly all of Houston now and chooses to not hire enough employees or have stations in each region of the city which results in poor management and week long waits. They also refuse to let their linemen work through the night or pay them overtime. It’s all about their bottom dollar even if that means people die.

Companies need to offer alternatives or help people through college considering the high cost of attending a technical school. This confirms what I have been afraid of: the way modern homes are built makes the southern areas of the US a dangerous place to live in during extreme temperatures, at least without some kind of personal generator. Anytime conditions are bad enough that the modern infrastructure powering everything breaks down (cold or hot) it's a problem. Perhaps older built structures from before electricity was a thing still could be okay for habitation without AC but at this point evacuating wouldn't have been about surviving the storm (since a Cat 1 isn't that scary overall) just surviving the after.
@AlvinBrinson
@AlvinBrinson Ай бұрын
A big problem is the way homes and apartments are insulated. They trap heat inside during the day. So even though the outdoors cools off (some) at night, the heat is trapped in the home all night so it remains significantly hotter indoors than out. Opening windows and doors doesn't help much because they aren't designed for ventilation.
@CrownxMe7
@CrownxMe7 Ай бұрын
In other words, capitalism causes US to abandon beneficial architectural options in favor of cheaper housing and poor insulation techniques. Everything looks the same, although the climate ranges drastically in the entire country. The US is in dire straits, incompetency is rampant and the whole country has been sold to foreign investors. Did I mention your utilities are owned by foreign investors?

Umm… there’s plenty of private businesses that care about customers & people. Furthermore, your logic inverted presumes the government cares more… which is total nonsense. The reason why you have a single entity running the greater Houston power distribution system is because of bureaucracy limiting competition. That’s been the case for most utility services for decades. Comcast is utter trash too… but they have zero competition because government has created unbelievable barriers to entry that no startup can compete with.

That's all BS. Houston is a puppet blue city. ALL the surrounding burbs are red. That's where all the power lies. Remember Houston is the home of just about every oil company.

I grew up in Houston (out in the sticks actually, but same area), and we would be without power for days sometimes after a summer storm. Convenient? No. But did we live and have some unique and fun times with candles and being creative about things? Yes. Quit being wimps, people. Good grief. If you have a serious health condition, then that's not what what I'm referring to, and those people need to be helped. But if you're healthy, go help one of your neighbors who is in that bad health situation and quit complaining. Now the (alleged) corruption issues with the power delivery company? That's another issue. That might be legit.

It’s a bad look for Houston. Yes, it was a bad storm-but we just had a major storm that triggered the same mass outages. The grid should have been setup for it at this point. Better engineering solutions are in order, plain and simple.

@SteveBonario
@SteveBonario Ай бұрын
Just fine actually. Our friends with an EV have managed to save their food by plugging in their refrigerator to their EV. They are very glad they have it. (Perhaps some day hybrid gas/electric vehicles could be used as a generators (some kind of "generator power mode") instead of people needing to buy a generator for emergencies. )
