Thanks for the video Kevin. Can you confirm something that is eating away at me. Is this mixer an audio interface. The Mackie manuals and you in the video refer to USB recording but is that the same as a multi input audio interface?

Yes! It's one of the cooler aspects of the new Onyx lineup. You can use it like a normal mixer for live gigs and rehearsal spaces AND use it as a multi-channel audio interface. Record all your inputs on separate channels in your DAW simultaneously over USB.

Fantastic video, thanks a ton for this! Apparently, at least according to Mackie, the board's routing is half-normaled by default so if you plug a 1/4" TRS into one of the channel inserts only until the first click, it will actually act as a direct out, so you could hook up directly to outboard gear without the need for a patchbay!

i have a mackie onyx12 and i find the usb audio interface output a lot lower in volume than when just listening on the speakers, anyone else that has that problem? Now i need to gain stuff in ableton to get a decent volume again

The USB output will likely be pre-fader, so the mixer volume is not sent to the USB output. You will need to set the gain properly in your DAW if using the USB output to record. This is true of any interface. One tip is to pretend the mixer section is disabled if using it as a USB interface and treat it as if it were a separate audio interface unit.

We didn't experience any noticeable latency when using the mixer as an audio interface. Decent USB cables and a new(ish) MacBook Pro setup, as well as an iMac setup. Mostly using Studio One (v 4 or 5, I believe?) Obviously, when using it for a live purposes, there's not going to be any latency in the analog mixer.

hello and thanks for the introduction. I have a question: if I do not use the computer but only the sd card at the end of the recording are the tracks editable or what is recorded on the card cannot be edited? even simply the volumes of the individual tracks or the presence of effects

This is all covered in the manual. The SD card records a stereo mix directly from the board. If you want to record and further edit individual channels, you'd need to use the USB connection to a computer running a DAW in order to do so.

I’m interested in getting this mixer cause I do my music in house, but I don’t have the best treated room for recording.. How good is this mixer for removing background noise from the initial recording?

That's not really the job of a mixer, per se. Your best bet for eliminating background noise is simply using proper mic technique and mic placement initially to get the cleanest recordings possible, and then if necessary using a noise reduction plug-in in editing/mixing. The mic preamps on board the Mackie unit are designed to reproduce what the microphone is picking up, so the old adage remains true: "garbage in, garbage out." Get the cleanest sound at the source from the jump, and you'll be in the best position from there on out.

I have a TR-8S drum machine, Korg Minilogue XD and an electric guitar I wanna hook up to a mixer. Plans are to add a microphone for vocals and possibly a piano and some other different synths/instruments in the future. Would the Mackie Onyx 12 be able to handle this effecient?

Sure, I don't see why not. It's got plenty of inputs for the instruments and microphones you've mentioned there.

No, mixers typically do not handle MIDI. You'd need to route the MIDI outputs of your controller to whatever synth you're controlling, as a mixer only processes incoming and outgoing audio signals and MIDI doesn't actually produce any audio.

No, your DAW gets the raw feed pre-EQ and pre-FX, if we recall correctly.

A german tech mag said that the roundtrip latency of the USB Mixer Interface is pretty damn good, can you confirm that? I saw the driver panel just on pictures, seems similar to the Steinberg Asio Panel from the URC Series.

Compressor plug-ins for your DAW are included as downloads, but as far as on-board fx on the mixer itself, you'd need to consult the owner's manual available on Mackie's website for a complete list of DSP-based fx.

Hi, thanks for the info. I was wondering. I’ve got instruments plugged in to most channels all being recorded into ableton on separate channels. However, there is an issue with channel 13/14. I can hear the input on the mixer but it’s not being recorded in ableton unless I press the send button. But then channel 13/14 on ableton is recording the whole desk rather than just channel 13/14. Is this correct?
