My first job was working in a popular music store (Sydney, Australia) in the late 80’s. Being a guitarist (and also a bit of an amateur scientist) I made it my mission to try and then rank every brand of strings that were available; and also would have setup 100’s of guitars for others over those years too. I settled on D’Addario XLs early on and have used them exclusively ever since. They have great tonal balance, last well and are completely consistent, set to set. Watching these videos it’s clear that D’Addario’s success is not by accident - Jim comes across as one of those rare people who combines technical insight, and a desire to innovate, with great business sense. Awesome videos - thanks for creating these!

I appreciate these videos. Love hearing the history and getting to know D’addario better as a business and innovator in multiple instrument industries. I mostly use guitar and ukulele strings, but I still find this all very interesting. Thanks for sharing all of the neat photos and old ads too! Btw, would be interesting to see if D’addario could bring back those copper clad strings - perhaps they’d have better longevity and user experience with the XT or XS coating, or perhaps they are other more modern techniques that could be employed to prevent the issues they had. I would love to try them for guitar, and I bet bass players who used them would love to see them return when they were so popular for five years.
